Improving the world through engineering

OFFSHORE PIPELINES: LIFE MANAGEMENT & FITNESS FOR SERVICE.

Many offshore pipelines in the North Sea are over 30 years old and may be required to operate well into the 21st Century as the North Sea continues to supply oil and gas. It is essential that the pipeline infrastructure is maintained in order to meet these future energy demands. Accordingly, engineers need to be aware of the latest developments in pipeline inspection, maintenance and analysis. The North Sea is also presenting new challenges: 1. uctuating energy prices have led to pipeline decommissioning and recommissioning projects; and, 2. an increased awareness of global warming effects and CO2 emissions has led to an interest in converting depleted gas elds for carbon capture and storage (CCS). Both these challenges mean that maintaining pipeline integrity is a key consideration for the future of the North Sea. The conference will aim to transfer real knowledge and experience to young engineers looking to develop expertise in this exciting and essential area of the oil and gas business. WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Pipeline Engineers Graduate Engineers Technical Authorities Engineering Managers Operations Engineers Inspection Engineers Consultants and Service Providers

Aarons goal is to assist the oil and gas industry in operating pipelines in a manner that reduces the risk to the public through the application of state of the art technology. 09:30 OPENING PRESENTATION Blair McKay, Wood Group Integrity Management 10.00 REMAINING LIFE OF CORRODED PIPES: DNVS EXPERIENCE The use of deterministic and probailistic approaches to predicting remaining life Corrosion rate modelling from successive in line inspection runs Systems effects when modelling remaining life Alan Smith, Principal Integrity Engineer, DNV Alan Smith obtained a PhD in corrosion fatigue of offshore tubular joints. This was followed by 7 years at the Welding Institute working various aspects of structural integrity. In 2002 he moved to Aberdeen initially with Lloyds Register and subsequently with DNV. He is currently a principal integrity engineer with DNV and deals with many integrity and design issues relating to pipelines. 10.30 CARBON CAPTURE AND STORAGE: THE FEASIBILITY OF RE-USING EXISTING PIPELINE INFRASTRUCTURE TO TRANSPORT ANTHROPOGENIC CO2 Decommissioning pipelines is expensive and re-using pipelines for transporting anthropogenic CO2 may prove to be a better economic incentive Challenges related to re-using pipelines for CCS : integrity, availability and operational limitations Patricia Seevam, Pipeline Engineer, BP Patricia is a pipeline engineer in the Exploration, Production, and Technology (EPT) group of BP based in Sunbury. She did her PhD on the design and operation of the next generation of CO2 pipelines for CCS at Newcastle University. During that time she has given presentations on CO2 pipelines for CCS at different events worldwide (e.g. Petrobras, International Energy Agency (IEA), and China University of Petroleum, Beijing). The research at Newcastle University has initiated and informed a number of CO2 pipeline research projects in the UK and she currently supporting BP on some of its CCS initiatives. 11.00 REFRESHMENTS 11.30 INSPECTION OF OFFSHORE PIPELINES USING MULTIBEAM ECHO SOUNDERS ON THE ROUGH FIELD Subsea pipeline inspection drivers Overview of subsea acoustic technology and selection criteria Benets of MBES Review of the rough pipelines inspection project Steve McKenny, Asset Integrity Manager, Centrica Storage Ltd Steve is the Asset Integrity Manager for Centrica Storage Ltd with responsibility for the Integrity Management of Centricas gas storage assets in the UK. Steve has a BEng and MSc in Mechanical Engineering with 10 years of experience in upstream integrity engineering and management. He began is career with Penspen Ltd as a pipeline integrity engineer working on various integrity projects both in the North Sea and globally, specialising in subsea inspection and pigging before moving to join Chevron as an integrity management engineer primarily supporting Chevron Nigerias operations. 12.00 DROPPED OBJECTS A REVIEW OF ASSESSMENT METHODS AND INCIDENTS Assessment methods available based on energy exchange between impactor and target. Types of impactors and the consideration for assessment Protection and mitigation against dropped object damage Tony Yates Principal Integrity Engineer, Wood Group Tony is Principal Integrity Engineer with WGIM, and has been with the organisation since June 2010. Prior to that he was Pipelines Team Leader with Chevron in Angola, managing the operations and integrity issues for the large (450+) population of subsea pipelines, some of which were over 40 years old. He has also been Pipelines Technical Authority for CNRI 2006 2008, and worked for a number of service companies in the Oil and Gas industry, including PSL, NOWSCO and Sonomatic. 12.30 Q&A SESSION
