Exploring the Island of Marinduque

Adventure Redefined
The invitation to join the 31Trips in 5 Days exploring the island of Marinduque in the Philippines was a one-call-one-click away to experience a first-of-its-kind adventure. The excitement of immersion to the life and culture of the island was too good to ignore. 13 adventurers enlisted taking time off from their daily grinds to experience this very promising journey. This book chronicles most of the groups daily trips organized by Manila-based Arcobaleno Trailoutours. The 31 trips did not follow the original itinerary some for safety reasons, while others were due to limited time. However, the changes didnt diminish the wow moments of every trip. From the start of the trip on the night of March 26, 2013 till the last passenger got off the door-to-door van on March 31, the experience somehow gave a new definition to adventure. Special thanks to Pinoy Adventurista who recorded every place, event and activity the group experienced throughout the trip. His online blogs guided the organization of this book. Malaking tulong din ang amazing images contributed by the group members capturing the soul, colors and exotic culture of the island. When the trip ended, memorable moments were posted on Facebook, Instagram and preserved further on the following pages. Enjoy.

The night before day one began, the group led by Dan and Ken joined by Andy, Gil, Irone, Jane, Janice, Jeofrey, Lester, May, Mervin, Nicole and Sandy started the journey from the McDonalds restaurant in Buendia, Pasay City. They went south on an almost four-hour van ride to Lucena Port to catch a ferry ride. At the break of dawn the following day, the group arrived in the island of Marinduque.

The view from the boat approaching Gaspar Island, one of the Tres Reyes Islands in the itinerary for the day was postcard-perfect with its blue waters, coral beach and cottages.

Developing strong waves cut short the Tres Reyes Islands hopping. Sabi ng bangkero, delikado daw. On to Buyabod Port in Sta. Cruz town after lunch for a half-hour boat ride to Maniwaya Island to spend the night.

18

Photo ops to shoot the breathtaking view of the setting sun welcomed the group as they arrived In Maniwaya island for overnight camping.

Dan, Ken and Jane started to pitch tents as darkness slowly blanketed the surrounding.

19

20

Under the stars and summer night the group mingled... katuwaan, kwentuhan, habang tumatagay.

And then a surprise! A cake with candle lights came out from hiding and a birthday song greeted (Daddy) Andy who turned 65.

After a little more mingling and tagay tagay, the group called it a day and a night.

21

22

From a distance, visible silhouettes of people seemed standing on water. Paglapit ng bangka, yun palang circular sandbar ang nagcreate ng ilusyon. Palad Sandbar, as it is widely known, appears only during low tide

23

Clear water and low tide were the lures to get wet and experience this island attraction.

What made Mongpong island attractive is its unique rock formation that brings additional flavor to its white sand beaches and laid back ambiance.

29

30

31
Swimming in the clear blue waters of Aroma Beach under the sweltering heat of the sun, added more zest to the activities of the day.

32

33

34

Caves of Bathala is a network of eight caves in the town of Sta. Cruz covering around 19 hectares.

35

Arriving midafternoon limited the groups time to explore all and settled for just two of the eight cavesKuweba ng Simbahan and the Python Cave.

36

37

38

Kawa-kawa Falls in the town of Sta. Cruz are different from the other falls in the island. A series of cascades with some mini-waterfalls downstream, some can be very accessible while others need short climbs over slippery boulders.

Camping at the Marinduque Hot Spring in the town of Buenavista, capped Day 2 of the five-day adventures. After dinner, and before calling it a night, getting wet in the hot spring pool while playing some mind-boggling mystery game was the best recharger to get ready for the next days activities.

39

40

Not everybody woke up early to climb Mt. Malindig. Choice ng iba na magpahinga at matulog pa ng mahaba-haba for a long day ahead. Mt. Malindig is an ideal destination for mountaineers trailing across the lush and mossy forests. The group did not summit the peak dahil kapos na sa oras. A great island view shrouded with fog and clouds greeted them but soon the glorious sun rose up and did not disappoint.

41

Marinduque is one of the top tourist destinations in the Philippines during the Lenten season because of the Moriones Festival.

42

43

44

One of the highlights of the festival is Via Crusis, a re-enactment of the passion and suffering of Christ on his way to Calvary where he was crucified and pinned on the cross.

Cruising along the streets of the town, Via Crusis concludes at the Moriones Areana where the participants who played the thieves and Jesus Christ were tied on a cross before a big crowd.

45

46

In addition to the Via Crusis, other places to visit in Boac include the Catheral, the Museum and the Rejanos, a popular tourist hangout to shop for snacks and famous uraro for pasalubong. An ongoing trade fair for souvenir shopping cannot be missed.

Paadjao Falls in Sitio Paadjao, Barangay Bokbok in the town of Mogpog is an ideal place for picnicking or camping, the falls requires a bit of trekking passing through dense vegetation to reach it. The main falls is a 15-foot high cascading waterfalls which ends in a 10-foot deep pool.

47

On the way back to town, a quick stop by the hanging bridge was unresistable for more memory shots.

48

Mas maganda ang view pag topload ride. Iba ang dating ng scenic view even for just a short ride.

49

50
Gasan Butterfly Garden features several butterfly cages and wellkept gardens ideal settings for photo ops.

A late afternoon swim at Duyay Falls and man-made pool capped the activities of the day. To reach the place, the group did a 15-minute hike passing through rocky trail and river streams. The falls cool and clean water is an ideal place for swimming.

51

52

53
Bagumbongan Cave in the town of Sta. Cruz is an hours travel away from Gasan. Sitting in the village of San Isidro, the Cave and Subterranean River were discovered in 2009 by a group of tourism officers from Sta. Cruz, Marinduque.

Before exploring the cave, the group listened to a presentation on what to expect the dos and the donts inside the cave. The lead guide offered the option of when reaching the waterfalls, go backtrack. But the adventurers preferred the through-and-through route enter through one opening and exit through another.

54

55

The cave system is wellpreserved. I have to commend the community together with the local government for their efforts in ensuring the caves conservation and protection. I am so delighted to see towering stalactites and stalagmites, huge flow stones, some bats, live creatures and glittering geological formations. Truly an amazing work of nature!

57

58

59
Spelunking tests ones endurance, strength and flexibility. The adventurers took four hours to navigate the through and through route. Not bad, according to the guide.

60

Kahit pagod, basa na at putikan pa, the bragging right of conquering Bagumbongan Cave was the rewarding feeling the group felt after the exploration.

61
What better way to recover than a freshly-cut buko with its potassium-rich juice to drink and the silky flesh inside to scoop and eat.

62

Tarug Cave in the town of Mogpog is an hour drive away from San Isidro Cave. Two-stage challenge to reach the peak: ascent through a difficult 70-degree trail up to the viewing deck and another climb all the way to the peak.

63

64
Climbing cliffs and sharp rock formations to reach the peak required extreme caution and precision on every step.

65
The reward upon reaching the peak was well worth it a magnificent view of the mountains, the forests and the sea.

Poctoy Beach is in the town of Torrijos next to Sta.Cruz. Lenten season pulled big crowd to the beach cooling off. Strolling farther along the shore, the group found a less crowded area to enjoy the beach more.

66

The Battle of Pulang Lupa Historical Park, built to commemorate the battle won by the Marinduqueos over American forces during the PhilippineAmerican War was the last trip of the group before calling it day 4. But with sundown and darkness slowly creeping in, the group decided not to pursue the one to two hour trek and headed back to the base in Gasan instead.

67

68

After breakfast at the headquarters in Gasan, the group had some downtime and decided to wander around taking a fun tryke ride. Rumuors had it that theres a big event going on in town and thats what they wanted to find out.

69

70

Youthful looking tweens wearing colorful, creative costumes representing the surrounding communities greeted the adventurers when they arrived in town as the festival participants prepared for the parade about to begin.

71

72

73
Gasang-Gasang Festival is the annual Easter Sunday festival in the town of Gasan. It celebrates the origin of Gasan, a type of coral that used to be seen around the towns shoreline.

74
Contingents from different barangays showed their best choreographed moves and themed costumes as they competed for the coveted best of show award.

75

Before going back to the base headquarters, the group made a quick trip to Gasan Cathedral, located on a hill to get a glimpse of the town overlook.

76

Putungan,
finally revealed, was the best-kept secret weve been whispered at since the beginning of the trip. Putungan is Marinduqueos unique tradition of welcoming and honoring friends and visitors on special occasions. Trip organizers arranged this gathering for a safe trip back home send-off.

77

78

The Putungan team danced and serenaded the adventurers with putong songs. They crowned, handed flowers and showered the departing guests with coins, candies, confetti and petals wishing them prosperity and long life.

79

80
Lunch, boodle fight way immediately followed the Putungan festivities the perfect way to carbo-load before the long journey back home.

THE End of the Trips

The journey back home started with an hour drive to Balacanan Port in the town of Mogpog to catch a ferry on the way back to the mainland. Holiday weekend caused a big crowd heading back to the mainland. Anticipating the chaotic commuter rush, Arcobaleno contacted a doorto-door van service to assure the tired adventurers will get home safely and quickly.

Meet the Adventurers

This book is incomplete if it will not devote a section with a little more information about each of the adventurers. What better way to do that than a brief bio section. When the idea was proposed to the group, no objections came up. The enthusiastic participation was 110%. And the 10%? Coming up. As the bios flowed in, they revealed common threads that bind the group together. No guesswork necessary. Obviously, love for adventures and outdoors top them all. These are the keywords that define the group together no matter how diverse their other lives are. Strangers to each other when they assembled on March 26, 2013 at the McDonalds restaurant in Buendia, Pasay, the 13 adventurers bonded well when the trip was over on March 31. One member took the initiative of creating a Facebook group page that has now become their communications hub. Without that group page, creating this book would have been a nightmare. Because of it, gathering information was a breeze. It became the magnet where everybody posts and shares information, reads updates, cracks jokes, teases and picks on anybody caught behaving badly. And so...the bonding continues.

Pinoy Adventurista, Mervz to his friends is a travel and adventure junkie who writes his travels and adventures in his blog www.pinoyadventurista.com. He completed his elementary and secondary
education at St. Mary Magdalene School in Kawit Cavite, his Bachelor of Science in Information Technology degree at AMA Computer University - Cavite, and Master in Business Administration and Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Administration degrees both at De La Salle University, Dasmarias. Hes been a travel blogger for more than five years now. His blog seeks to encourage more people to explore and travel the Philippines more and (re)discover how beautiful his beloved country is. His biggest accomplishment as a traveler is setting foot on all the 80 provinces in the Philippines. He is an advocate of promoting local tourism by sharing his experiences in all his travels to different parts of the country. He hopes that through his writings, he can encourage more people to spend time visiting the different beautiful islands in the Philippines and experience its innate beauty and charm. He believes that, ...travelling is about sharing with others, either stories, tips or good times to inspire, persuade and encourage others to live their dreams, to travel and find their own adventure of a lifetime!

Gil Lian was born and raised in Mindoro Oriental. A self-proclaimed certified adventurista who loves
posting all his adventure pictures on Facebook, he enjoys eating local delicacies wherever he goes around the Philippines. In his adventures, he always want to try different mode of transportation like habal-habal and skylab. Surprisingly, trying the cheapest type of accommodation when hes on vacation is also in his bucket list. He frequently dreams of experiencing the best way to enjoy staycation on six-star or seven-star hotels and resorts around the world. He is a salesman and thats all for now. (Editors Note: Gil is an outstanding photographer. He has the eye for what makes a picture tell a story in the most artful and interesting way.The silhouette sunset photo on page 18 is one of his most remarkable contributions featured in this book.)

Irone Boquiron, a Science teacher during weekdays, is what most would call a weekend
warrior. He has completed more than 10 mountain climbs in less than a year since he started this hobby. Irone is mostly into mountaineering, but will not let down invitations to explore the outdoors in other fashions travelling, island-hopping, spelunking, beach bumming, and pretty soon, diving and surfing all these will be game as long as his schedule, and of course, the budget, will permit him. A runner by heart, he likes to explore new things that will further his skills and enjoyment, such as muay thai, capoeira, swimming, biking, and (hes not afraid to admit it) zumba-ing! Of course, no other pastime will surely get his attention more than eating! Irone hails from the bustling city of Marikina and dreams of exploring all corners of the country. With Marinduque Island down, loads of other beautiful places in the Philippine Islands await in his list to explore!

May Ubaldo, along with her twin sister, is the eldest of three siblings and is raised in Marikina,
a city known to have some of the most disciplined people in the country. She has built her career entirely in the finance industry having worked in one of the leading banks in the Philippines and now in a Philippine-based financial firm in Australia. Ironically though due to her petite build, shes been everybodys little girl even in her professional world. Her former boss even fondly calls her as one of her little girls in the office. Because of this, no one ever thought of her going into extreme adventures. She does not also consider herself into it either but she loves challenging herself and seems not to know how to turn down invites, with Marinduque being one of those. In just less than a year, she has managed to conquer a few mountains with Mt. Pulag being her first. She has also been able to do white water rafting, river tubing, cliff diving, helmet diving, spelunking and a half marathon within a years span. Now shes expanding her bucket list to include wakeboarding, diving, sky diving and a full marathon (which she plans to do outside the country) all to be ticked off from her list soon.

Nicole Paguio is a lazy, accident-prone explorer. She likes to visit new places as long as things are
made easy for her. If someone could carry her while trekking, she would choose that option. Or if theres a van, train, motorcycle or any moving object that will take her from point A to point B, that would be the best option for her. Nicole hates to walk but loves to be close to nature. She also thinks that even in the most remote places, she would be served with burgers and pizza. She wont even dare try that seaweed and freshly-picked fish. And take her to museums and she could still be injured. She is from Pampanga who now resides in Taguig to work as a corporate slave.

Janice Rivera was bitten by the adventure bug in 2007 and has been blissfully carrying the virus
since. A good portion of her salary as a corporate professional is spent on this awesome infection and shes been proven contagious by people in close proximity. Multiple ventures around Luzon,Visayas, and a few trips abroad, are all symptoms of her advancing condition. The only once-in-a-while treatment is when funds are already running low (lol). And it doesnt really matter what kind of dosage she is given, shell take it. Tall trees or sky-rise buildings, cramped bus terminals or cold spacious airports, typhoon-battered tents or cozy hotels, locals or expats, with good old travel buddies or new found friends, boodle fights or fine dining, tribal rituals or modern street parties, safe havens or life threatening activities, sunsets on wide horizons or blinding city lights, atop a mountain or underwater, countryside cliffs or skyscraper towers, planned 12 months in advance or ridiculously spontaneous anything new and unfamiliar feeds the addiction. Even misadventures and mishaps are culprits. So there! No plans of getting a cure anytime soon, lures of nature and man-made grandeur constantly swoon. Withdrawal syndrome kicking-in lately. Adventure-love sick she is and will be...

85

Ken Helmuth is your typical adventurous person who loves to play the guitar, beat the drums, and
sing the vocals with his band called Tragedy of the Common. His band has recorded an album titled the Anatomy of a Headbang. Although Ken is a Manila-born city boy, he still breathes and bleeds that strong Batangueo blood. His career-building is starting now as a registered nurse at Manila Doctors Hospital.Yet, Ken considers his most notable accomplishment to date still centers on his family and the great people he meets during his adventures. Getting to know Ken as a person, its easy to detect his dedication to giving what is needed of him. With Arcobalenos Marinduque Adventures, Ken did an excellent job as the teams medic and first aider. He was in-charge of warming up before climbs and maintained the cleanliness of the trail. Quiet and reserved most of the time, Ken up close will reveal his amazing trait as a great listener. Befriending him is just like winning a lottery and one will surely feel like more than a million bucks once one gets to know him better.

Jeofrey Lata, grew up in Roxas City, Capiz but now resides in San Mateo, Rizal. He is an avid
traveler and a very active mountain climber. Since the Marinduque adventures, he has been to many more exotic locations that will be the envy of fellow adventurers who share the same interests. The frequent postings in Jeofs Facebook timeline show interesting, and to some, maybe unfamiliar places he explored. These include climbing Mt. Manalmon in San Miguel, Bulacan and a trip to Bolinao, Pangasinan. While in Quezon province, he surfed the waves in Baler, Aurora; visited Borawan Island, Islang Puting Buhangin and Dampalitan in Padre Burgos and climbed the Devils Mountain, Mt. Cristobal and Mt. Banahaw in Dolores. A trip to Batangas took him to an oversized rock overlooking the Taal Crater Lake, Taal Volcano in Talisay. He climbed Mt. Makiling via Sto. Tomas. While in Laguna, he got wet in Banga Falls in Nagcarlan, Mt. Maculot, Mt. Mabilog in San Pablo and still had time to enjoy the sceneries at Panden Lake and Yarbo Lake. One of Jeofs Facebook postings shows him wearing a shirt that says, Its not fitness. Its Life.Just the way Jeof wants it.

Jane Lim is a free-spirited-Lagalag girl. She knows no limits in space and time. But she sets limits between her and the places she visits. She respects the culture, creed and serenity of the places she takes in. She adheres to low-impact traveling and sets out on most of her journeys alone. As an adventurer, shes into mountain climbing, rock cliimbing, trail run, beaches, islands and do-it- yourself trips. One her favorite hobbies is photography. She enjoys capturing and sharing the beauty of the places she visits to any one who has the same interest. Born in Taft Eastern Samar and raised in Manila, Jane is in school for her second degree Accountancy. She is a member of the Arcobaleno team online travel events that offers travel and outdoor adventures. Traveling clears up your head and grants you new perspectives to solving personal problems.

Tour guide told Sandy Napa they were going to look at a cave just look at its mouth, and not really enter it. He followed the others as they progressed through the trail, which, in some parts, was practically a vertical rock wall. It was too late for him to turn back, and so the 31-year old Pasig City native had no choice but to muster all the strength he had and push on. And push, he did the same way he struggled for seven years to finish his BS Business Administration and Accountancy degree from U.P. Diliman; the same way he struggled through the long hours of his Accounting stints with Maersk Filipinas Inc. and Greenfield Development Corporation and now with Procter and Gamble. He pushed on carefully, terribly afraid of losing his life through an erroneous step. And then, in a split second, he realized that he loved his life after all. Despite all the challenges he had been confronting the past weeks prior to this trip, he had a reason to live his family, especially his parents and his niece, Klare. This is turning out to be the adventure I envisioned this trip to be, he thought. Going down the same way they went up, finally unassisted by Ken, he knew in his heart that this accidental conquest of Tarug Peak is bound to be the start of more adventures to come.

Lester Almazan Canapi is a graduate of BSECE in AMA Computer University Fairview

Campus. He grew up in Capul, a town in the province of Northern Samar. He now lives in Quezon City to get close to his job as a Measuring Tech at MicroSourcing, a BPO company and enjoy his freelance work as a hiking guide. Co-workers call him Ter or Canaps. But get this...hiking buddies address him as Master for some very obvious reasons. In 2012, Lester discovered mountaineering and developed strong addiction to assaulting summits when traversing the mountains of Luzon. Lesters ever-present posts in Facebook reveal some exotic, to some maybe unfamiliar, places hes been to within Luzon Mt. Balagbag, Rodriguez Rizal; Bakun, Benguet; Gulugod Baboy, Mt. Tinglawan, Sombrero Island in Anilao, Batangas; Mt. Lobo and Bangkalan Peak in Lobo Batangas. Lesters mountaineering track of mind is now set on what his next adventure will be. He is very eager to summit the rest of the mountains in the islands of the Philippines. Lester is always guided by the thought that only mountaineers and adventurers go to amazing places that not all people can see and experience.

Andy Eugenio dreamed of being a landscape architect when he was growing up but Math,
Geometry and Physics did not interest him. Although he found himself trapped in the mind of a graphic and web designer, he had a productive professional career practising the trade. For more than three decades, he tinkered with graphic design and became a product of the old school (drawing board, pasteups, galley proofs) and the new school (MacBook Pro, Adobe Cloud, USB Flash drives and pdfs). When not designing graphics or building websites, Andy can be found in his backyard doing yardwork or with his fellow Pinoy Roadies road biking the backroads of Memphis, Tennessee and beyond. Once a year, he visits his hometown in Bulacan to recharge from his daily grind in the states, joining adventure tours(Mt. Pulag, Davao River Rafting) and/or medical missions (Bacolod, Masbate, Cebu, Negros Oriental). Physical ability permitting, he hopes to explore more places in the Philippines and if budget affords, some more places overseas as he enters the world of retirement starting in 2014.

Dan Samarita is a travel enthusiast and blogger who shares his passion for adventure by organizing
outdoor events in the Philippines. He is the founder of Arcobaleno Trailoutours, a flourishing company that has organized events ranging from mountain climbing to an adventure-packed trip with a combination of spelunking, mountain climbing and island hopping. Over the course of two years, he was able to climb numerous mountains which include Mt. Halcon in Mindoro - the climb he considers as most challenging and phenomenal adventure he has ever done. Dan lives in Las Pias City, studied at Mapua Institute of Technology in Manila. He desires to be a film maker, graphic artist and to travel around the world.

Tiger, remember Tiger? Tiger became Dans climbing buddy in 2012. His first hike was in April when he
joined Dan at Mt.Tagapo, in Binangonan Rizal. Since then, Tiger has been Dans loyal adventure companion. Together, they conquered Mt. Arayat and Mt. Apo, as well as experienced the culture of the Philippines. Tiger was very excited to join the 31 Trips adventure because finally, hell be able to witness the Moriones festival in Marinduque. Unfortunately, during the last activity on the fourth day, Tiger was nowhere to be found. Did he run away? Didnt he like the food? The company? Dan was frantic, looking everywhere, asking everybody if anyone has seen Tiger. He even suspected tigernapping or conspiracy to get Tiger out of the picture. Tigers whereabouts finally surfaced when Dan was reviewing his Marinduque images. There was Tiger playing bury me in the white sands in Poctoy Beach. It then dawned on Dan that, that was the last time he had contact with Tiger. Tigers gone. His memories linger on. Rest in peace, Tiger. The Marinduque peeps love and adore you.
