There are too many hungry people.

In Massachusetts, there are 700,000 people who face food insecurity, over half of whom are children. This means that 11.4% of households do not always know where their next meal is coming from. High cost and the inability to access fresh produce combine to create both immediate and long-term hardship for low-income people. A diet lacking in fresh food is a leading cause of obesity and other diet-related health issues such as diabetes and heart disease, leading to increased personal debt and family instability, and costs the nation $130.5 billion in healthcare and related costs.

Boston Area Gleaners, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing surplus farm crops for people in need. We deliver high quality, local produce to pantries and meal programs by creating relationships with local farmers who want to donate surplus crops and providing volunteer labor to harvest what would otherwise be plowed under.

Feeding hungry individuals and families since 2004

Boston Area Gleaners can help.

We have recovered over 300,000 pounds of surplus produce since 2004,
providing 1.2 million 4 oz. servings for people in need.
BUT WE COULD DO MORE.

There are over 1,000 fruit and vegetable farms in eastern Massachusetts, and farmers cannot afford to harvest what they cannot sell.
IF WE COULD TRIPLE THE NUMBER OF FARMS WE CURRENTLY GLEAN

How YOU Can Help

To become a volunteer: email volunteer@bostonareagleaners.org If you are a farmer: contact our Gleaning Coordinator at coordinator@bostonareagleaners.org If you are a food pantry: contact our Executive Director at director@bostonareagleaners.org DONATE: online via our website or by mail, both addresses on reverse.

we would rescue 1.2 million servings of fruit and vegetables annually for hungry people in our region.

In order to accomplish this, we need to:

1. Increase our network of farms, recipient agencies, and volunteers. 2. Increase staffing and organizational capacity to better manage this network.
3.

Share our knowledge and advocate by providing technical assistance to groups and organizations that want to start gleaning, and advocating for financial benefits for farmers and the economic value of rescuing surplus.
