In Massachusetts, there are 700,000 people who face food insecurity, over half of whom are children. This means that 11.4% of households do not always know where their next meal is coming from. High cost and the inability to access fresh produce combine to create both immediate and long-term hardship for low-income people. A diet lacking in fresh food is a leading cause of obesity and other diet-related health issues such as diabetes and heart disease, leading to increased personal debt and family instability, and costs the nation $130.5 billion in healthcare and related costs.

Boston Area Gleaners, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing surplus farm crops for people in need. We deliver high quality, local produce to pantries and meal programs by creating relationships with local farmers who want to donate surplus crops and providing volunteer labor to harvest what would otherwise be plowed under.

There are over 1,000 fruit and vegetable farms in eastern Massachusetts, and farmers cannot afford to harvest what they cannot sell.
IF WE COULD TRIPLE THE NUMBER OF FARMS WE CURRENTLY GLEAN
we would rescue 1.2 million servings of fruit and vegetables annually for hungry people in our region.

Share our knowledge and advocate by providing technical assistance to groups and organizations that want to start gleaning, and advocating for financial benefits for farmers and the economic value of rescuing surplus.
