ACTIVITIES
Academic Events
Dramatic Interpretation Do you have a dramatic flair? Do you understand the woes of those you come to love through translation? If so, Dramatic Interpretation is perfect for you! Participants in the Dramatic Interpretation contest must compete on the level of Latin last completed. Contestants may enter only one advanced level, either poetry or prose, but not both. A poem (advanced poetry level only) must be recited in the appropriate meter, including elisions. They are requested to have memorized their passaged thoroughly prior to attendance at the Convention. In this contest, costumes and props are NOT to be used. A false start (i.e., no longer than the first line) will be allowed without a point deduction. Contestants should make sure their movements and gestures are appropriate to the content of the presentation. Latin Oratory Follow the footsteps of Cicero and other great Roman speakers by expatiating (or ranting) a selected passage (in Latin, of course). Violent hand motions and extremely dramatic pauses are highly encouraged. Preparation and memorization is also encouraged, but who knows you might be destined to become a famous Roman politician and vehemently denounce a traitor to the republic! Open Certamen Do you love Roman history? Mythology? Latin in general? If you replied yes to any one of those questions, Open Certamen is the event for you! Its a great way to have fun while testing your knowledge of Latin, and you mig ht even meet new friends from all over the state of California. Youve probably seen those teams from your school preparing hard for competitive Certamen, but you dont have to cram all those facts into your head to enjoy the competition. Just come over to Open Certamen and compete against other for fun. We look forward to seeing you there! Pre-Convention Contests All delegates are allowed to enter modern myths, poems, and slogans before convention to be judged against other delegates in California of the same Latin level. A modern myth must be an original myth meant to explain the existence of some phenomenon in nature or in modern culture, an existing classical myth adapted to fit modern times, or an original myth centered around existing classical figures. Poetry must be based on this year's JCL theme and must be in English, but are not limited to any specific meter or verse. Slogans should advertise JCL and can be written in either English or Latin. Students can enter a maximum or ONE modern myth, ONE poem, and TWO slogans; all ST entries are due by FEBRUARY 21 , 2014. Sight Reading This is event is meant for anyone that has had experience reading in lingua latina - that is, everyone. From freshmen newly enlisted into the legion, to experienced seniors who were born in the world of Caesar and Horatius (just kidding), there's a passage for every grade level, that everyone gets an equal amount of time to prepare - five minutes. Fear not; don't be too discouraged by what seems like an impossible task. The passage has a translation right below it, so everyone will have an equal understanding of the text; therefore, all the reader has to do is, well, read it well. And remember all of the pronunciation rules, diphthongs, longs/shorts and elisions (for poetry), tone, and reading speed. While three judges observe your overly nervous, jittery mental state. Okay it's not that bad; just come and give it a try!

Arts and Crafts

Impromptu Art Do you enjoy an artistic challenge? Then Impromptu Art is for you. Receive a bag of random things and make something amazing that goes along with this years theme. You must use everything that is inside of the bag, while also using some optional items placed outside of the bag. Unleash your creative side at this interesting challenge. Join us in our goal to make it the biggest Impromptu Art in the history of JCL! Project Runway In the words of Madonna, Vogue, strike a pose. Unleash your inner fashion designer at Project Runway. Experience Project Runway like never before: the timed challenge, the judges, the suspense The only thing missing is Tim Gunn. Choose your fabric and create a Roman inspired ensemble that will wow your fellow JCLers. Create a line of clothing to be featured in the convention gallery. Entries that represent the Project Runway Special Theme can win the votes of anyone who visits the gallery. There is an added bonus; the top three ensembles will win special prizes! We hope that everyone comes so that we can have a huge Project Runway! Group Model Project A common phrase is that Rome wasnt built in a day. In this activity, how ever, you and a group of friends will make a large-scale model in a matter of hours. You can recreate Rome, or simply construct an ancient building, home, monument, or structure of your choice. A variety of resources such as pictures will be available to assist you in the construction of selected projects. Prepare your detailed structure with cardboard, clay, styrofoam, and even wood. Group model projects will also have a special display area in the Convention Gallery, where they will be voted on. If your project wins, you will receive a special prize! JCL Mural Lets get together and make something amazing. This year we want to create a mural all about JCL. It fits perfectly with this years theme, Great things have small beginnings. Stop by, grab a square, and draw something that makes you think of JCL. Drawing not your thing, no problem, you can also write your favorite thing about JCL in general. We want ALL of you JCLers to stop by, so we can make an amazing mural that encompasses our club and shows how we are one be united club! Art Gallery Travel through a labyrinth of art, guided by ancient Roman-themed characters. Come to see art such as the Pre-Convention creations, jewelry, ceramics, paintings, drawings, candles, and impromptu art pieces of your fellow JCL members. Also, make sure to vote for the Group Model Project and Project Runway entries featured within the maze! You decide the winners!

Chapter Contests
Banner Show off your chapter's style with a banner! The theme is all important things first begin small, so show us in an artistic fashion your take on this theme. And who knows? Your ideas may turn out to be the most grand! Exhibit your spirit for Latin and your chapter with a banner! Catapult Do you get in trouble for flinging things in class? Well we won't tell you not to. We encourage you to fling water balloons, beanbags, and plushies with your chapter catapult! Not a trouble maker? Then apply what you learned in physics and construct your catapult for your chapter. Come lay siege to the University High fields with an onslaught from your mighty catapult! Chariot Ever wonder what it was like to be one of the essedarius (charioteers) of ancient Rome? Or maybe you just want to horse around as a horse? If so, you have that opportunity in our chariot races! Construct a chariot with your chapter and bring it to convention where you will compete against other chapters chariots. It's not the Circus Maximus. But hey! All important things once began small! Scrapbook Can you not express your joy and pride for your chapter with just words? Then share your schools proudest JCL memories by setting them in a scrapbook! Be creative and show off your artistic flare and dedication through your scrapbook. And remember, even small memories can be the most valuable memories! Digital Scrapbook Are you a Youtube sensation? Do you have a burning pride for Latin? Then create a Digital Scrapbook with your JCL chapter! Show us the memories and events that can't be expressed in a simple picture. Show us those tech savvy talents and that movie making magic! Or maybe you want just a humble slide show instead of a whole video? We'd love to see that too! Just be creative and don't disregard the small things, they may be important!
