Obey the Law

Procedure. 1. Fill a large graduated cylinder with water. 2. Get a piece of magnesium less than 4.5 cm long and measure it to the nearest 0.1 cm. Record the length of your piece in the data table. 3. Your teacher will give you the mass of 1 m of magnesium. Record it in the data table. 4. Roll your piece of magnesium into a coil and tie a string around the coil. 5. Measure 10 mL of hydrochloric acid into a graduated cylinder. Pour the HCl into the eudiometer. 6. Tip the eudiometer on its side. Very slowly pour water into the eudiometer. The water should sit on top of the acid in the tube. When the eudiometer is about half -full, pour the water quickly to fill the tube. Fill the eudiometer completely with water (until it overflows the tube slightly.) 7. Push your magnesium coil into the water. The coil should be placed about 1 inch deep in the tube. Make sure the string hangs outside the eudiometer. Put the rubber stopper in the top of the eudiometer. Some water should squirt out to ensure there is no air in the tube. 8. Place your thumb over the hole in the stopper. Very quickly, turn the tube upside down and set it inside the large graduated cylinder, making sure to keep the hole covered until the stopper is under the water. 9. Watch as the acid flows down the tube and reacts with the magnesium. 10. When the reaction is finished, raise the eudiometer until the water level inside the tube is even with the water level in the large graduated cylinder. Read the volume of the gas produced from the scale on the eudiometer. Record the volume in the data table. 11. Your teacher will give you the values for the barometric pressure, water vapor pressure, and temperature for the experiment. Record these in the data table.

Data Table Length of magnesium used Mass per meter of magnesium Volume of gas collected Temperature Barometric pressure Water vapor pressure Calculations 1. Find the moles of magnesium contained in your piece of magnesium. a. Change the length of your piece to meters. Move the decimal point in your number 2 places to the left. ______________________ m b. Multiply the length of your piece by the mass per meter. _________________ m x __________________ g/m = _________________ g c. Convert the mass of magnesium to moles. _________________ g __________________ g/mol = _________________ mol 2. Convert the volume of gas to L by moving the decimal point in your number 3 places to the left. _____________________ L 3. Convert the Celsius temperature to Kelvin by adding 273 to your number. _____________________ K 4. Use Daltons Law of Partial Pressures for collecting a gas over water to find the pressure of just the hydrogen gas. Barometric pressure - Water vapor pressure = Pressure of H2 ________________ - _________________ = _________________ atm 5. Use the Ideal Gas Law equation to find the theoretical volume (volume you should have produced from the experiment.) V = nRT = mol (#1) x 0.0821 x temp (#3) P pressure (#4) V = x 0.0821 x . = __________________ L cm m mL C atm atm

This is you theoretical answer.

6. Determine your percent error. a. Experimental - Theoretical = Answer ___________________ - _________________ = __________________ b. Answer from part a Theoretical x 100 = % error __________________ __________________ x 100 = _________________ %
