Benchmark/Standard: CCSS.Math.Content.7.G.B.6 Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, volume and surface area of two- and three-dimensional objects composed of triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes, and right prisms. Behavioral Objective: The learner will use given conditions to find the area of a trapezoid. Anticipatory Set: Students will first construct and cut out two congruent trapezoids. Next, students will discuss the area formulas that have been discussed the past two days. They will also discuss what it means to be the height of the figure. Objective/Purpose: We have been talking about the area of the polygons that we talked about last chapter. Today were going to discover what the area of a trapezoid is. This is going to help us when we talk about volume of 3-D shapes later in this unit. Input a. Task Analysis: i. Share the objective and purpose for the lesson. ii. Review the area formulas already known and discuss again what the height is. iii. Using the cut out trapezoids derive the area of a trapezoid. iv. Work through the note page. v. Demonstrate how to find the area of a trapezoid using the formula. vi. Allow students time to work through the quick checks to check for understanding. vii. Allow students time to work on homework before class is dismissed. b. Thinking Levels i. Knowledge: Know the formula for the area of a trapezoid. Know what the base and the height of a trapezoid are. ii. Comprehension: Understand what information is necessary to solve for the area of a trapezoid. iii. Application: Use the definitions and formulas to find the area of a trapezoid. c. Methods & Materials i. Ways of Presenting: Lecture, demonstration, and discussion. ii. Materials Needed: Note page, graph paper, scissors, pencil, calculator, Elmo, textbooks. Modeling a. First identify what shape we are trying to find the area of (in this lesson always trapezoid). b. Identify the bases of the trapezoid.

c. Identify the height of the trapezoid. d. Plug the values found in b and c into the formula for area of a trapezoid. e. Solve the equation and round to the nearest tenth if necessary. VII. Checking for Understanding a. Use quick checks to assess all students understanding. b. Ask students who put answers on the board explain what they did.

VIII. Guided Practice a. Students will work on the homework assignment in class. b. The teacher will be available to answer any questions. IX. Independent Practice a. The students will finish any problems at home and bring them to the next class period where we will go over the answers. Closure a. Exit Slip: Write the I can statement and what they still need help in understanding on the exit slip. Turn this in before leaving.
