Oman Girl Guide

1. Wash and finish:

The official Guide Uniform
A colored garment made of cotton
A garment made of synthetic fiber
A woolen garment
A pair of socks or stockings

Washing cotton coloured clothes

1. Add two tablespoons of washing powder to cold water and leave the
clothes to get soaked for 25-30 minutes. Do not leave colored clothes
soaked overnight as the colors will drain off.
2. Separate white clothes from colored ones. Adding a bit of blue to white
clothes makes them whiter.
3. Scrub the clothes well, especially the collar and underarm areas.
4. Change the water several times.
5. Continue this until all the soap is gone
6. Wring out the water and spread out and hang to dry
7. After drying ironing the clothes eases out the wrinkles. Add a starch spray
to regain the crispiness of cotton fabrics.

Washing synthetic fiber clothes

1. Add 2 tablespoons of liquid facial soap into a bucket of cold water. Stir the
solution to mix it until suds have formed.
2. Dip the garment into the solution. Pull it back out. Repeat this several times
until the garment has been thoroughly soaked.
3. Use your fingers to clean the underarms of the dress.
4. Fill another bucket with clean, cold water.
5. Dip the garment to this. Pull it back out and repeat again several times until
the soap is washed off.
6. Lay the garment out flat on top of a cloth towel. Starting with the top of the
garment roll it and the towel up until you reach the end. This avoids
wrinkling.
7. Unroll the garment and towel. Repeat step 6 using a dry towel. Continue
this until there is no more water dripping out.
8. Lay your garment out on a flat surface. Reshape it and leave it to dry
completely.

Washing wool

1. Soak woolen items in cold water for a few hours before washing. This
method will help to stop the woolen item from shrinking
2. There are products specially made for washing wool, or you can make a
cleaner yourself with a tiny amount of laundry soap or hand soap, water,
and optionally a small amount of essential oil (such as lavender). Dissolve
the cleaner in the water first, to prevent agitating the wet wool. You can
mix the soap into hot water, and then mix that into a larger quantity of cold
water to aid in mixing the soap in well. (or use mild detergent)
3. Wash in sink by soaking and squishing being careful not to rub the wool
against itself or it will felt
4. Dry flat in desired size/shape. A folding clothes rack can help here. Remove
excess water with a towel by laying the item on a towel and rolling it up
jelly-roll style, squeezing and pressing gently. Unroll then, leave in fresh air
to dry.

Washing socks

1. Soak in lukewarm water and washing powder for 15 minutes
2. Scrub clean. (especially near toes and heel)
3. Wash twice in clean water until no soap remains.
4. Squeeze dry without wringing.
5. Hang to dry

2. Describe the routine of washing; make and use starch water. Discuss with
the Tester the suitability of various starches and detergents. Remove the
following stains

Tea
Coffee
Fruit juice
Ink

Basic washing routine

Pre-sort your clothes

General rule is to sort your clothes into three categories whites, colors
and delicates. Bed sheets are usually loaded as 2 when washing. Always
check pockets and hand wash stained clothes separately form the rest

Schedule a laundry day

Plan a laundry day that suits you and doesnt affect your other plans. Its
not efficient energy and labor wise to do a bunch of small loads everyday
but rather ones a week is the best. Clothes become cleaner when washed
this way as well.

Fold and hang clothes immediately.

This avoids wrinkles to form and also allows time for ironing. Have empty
hangers kept ready for quick access.

Equip your laundry room

Arrange the entire room in an orderly and organized way. E.g.: If you use
vinegar to soak away coffee stains keep some in the laundry room as well.
But remember not to overcrowd the room.

Finally determine a time to start washing

How to make starch water

Ingredients

*1 heaping tbsp of corn starch
* 1 cup water
* 1 spray bottle

Directions

* Heat water for 90 seconds in the microwave. This makes it easier for the corn
starch to dissolve.
* Add corn starch and stir till completely dissolved. The water will be a milky
white color. If you want add in a couple drops of essential oil for fragrance.
* Carefully pour into the spray bottle.

How to use starch water

1. Dilute liquid starch with water following the recommendations on the
bottle
2. Mix well and pour into a spray bottle
3. Spray uniforms or fabrics while they are slightly damp
4. Iron with a warm iron set on steam

Suitability of various starches and detergents

Choosing the best laundry detergent

1. First choose whether you want a powder or a liquid.
2. Avoid buying inexpensive laundry detergents as the powerful chemicals
present could ham your clothes.
3. If using a washing machine use detergents that are recommended
especially for it.
4. Select ones that are environment friendly. Avoid ones that contain
phosphates.
5. Different types of stains require different types of detergents. To remove
difficult stains use enzyme based detergents.
6. Choose detergents depending the fabric of your clothes. For delicates like
silk and wool use detergents that are bleach or enzyme based for example.
7. For white clothing use bleach formulated detergents and for colored
clothing use the ones with brighteners.
8. For baby clothes use ones that do not cause allergies. Use detergents of a
reputed brand

Removing stains

Tea

1. Make a mixture of one teaspoon of vinegar with a quart of water.
2. Spray this mixture straight to the tea stains and let it sit for about ten
minutes
3. Then blot it up and rinse the clothes thoroughly.
4. Lastly wash the clothes as usual and air-dry.

Coffee

1. Blot the coffee stain immediately with paper towel
2. Rinse the back of the cloth where the stain is located. Do not rinse the top
surface of the stain directly yet because rinsing the stained surface may
cause the stain to spread.
3. Mix powdered laundry detergent and equal parts white vinegar and cold
water in a small bowl to make a paste the same consistency as toothpaste
4. Spread the paste on both surfaces of the coffee-stained material, front and
back. Leave the paste on the fabric for 5 minutes.
5. Use a nail brush or toothbrush to rub both sides of the stain in a circular
motion
6. Rinse the front and back of the stain with cold water
7. Rub a small amount of liquid laundry detergent into the stain with your
finger and thumb.
8. Launder the piece of fabric according to directions on the tag
9. Examine the material after washing to see if any stain remains.

Fruit juice

1. Begin by blotting with a clean cloth to remove as much of the juice as
possible.. Working from the outside of the stain towards the center will
keep the stain from spreading.
2. Moisten cloth well with cleaning solution and blot it onto the stain. T
prepare cleaning solution; 1/4 c. baking soda and 2 cups cold water
3. When the stain is removed, wash the clothing in cold water following
detergent recommendations on the care tag.
4. You may want to air-dry the clothing to be sure the stain is not noticeable
when its dry
5. Cranberry, raspberry, grape and tomato juices are the hardest stains. To
remove them apply 3% hydrogen peroxide then ammonia (do not apply
ammonia to wool garments it will damage the fibers) and blot to remove.
Ink
1. Treat very fresh ink stains as soon as possible.
2. Place a blotting paper towel underneath the ink stain. Blot dry from both
surfaces
3. Swab the ink stain from the back of the garment with glycerin. Or use
hairspray
4. Mix cold water with laundry detergent in a small cup and drop onto the
treated ink stain. Use the paper towel to create a bit of lather and dab away
the resulting ink colored foam. Continue this process until the ink strain is
gone.

3. Have knowledge of the use and care of an iron and washing machine.

Iron Care

1. Use the right kind of water when using the iron. Tap water contains a lot
of minerals and they will build up over time therefore practice suing
distilled water.
2. Rinse out the iron after each use. Dont let water remain in the iron ever
for a few hours and never let water stay overnight. Pour out the old
water then rinse with clean water for a few minutes.
3. Clean the soleplate. Heat the iron on a low setting then turn it off. Then
with a cloth soaked in baking soda, scrub the soleplate. Wipe the surface
with a clean dry towel.
4. Clean the steam ports. Take a thin piece of wire and clean the ports by
poking the wire.
5. Iron storage. Wipe off the iron when you finished with. Store in an
upright position.

Washing machine care

1. Two or three times a year, simply run the machine without any
clothes in the drum on the hottest wash with the correct amount of
detergent for a normal load. This keeps the machine clean and free
from dirt and grease. This helps clean the inside of the machine

2. Overloading can cause poor wash results, damage to garments and
ultimately the machine itself.

3. Make a good choice when selecting the type of detergents as it could
harm both the machine and garments. Use a well recommended well
known brand.

4. If using fabric conditioners for aroma etc. only add fabrics
conditioner to the final rinse either by hand or using the machines
dispenser. If fabric conditioner and detergents mix, they form a
residue which will not dissolve and can build up as white/grey
deposits in the machine, particularly inside the agitator of top
loaders.

5. Washing machines require a lower dose of detergent. Therefore use
a slightly lower amount than recommended.

6. To clean the external case avoid using harsh chemical cleaners. Using
a good microfiber cloth and water is sufficient.
