Don't Quit...
Don't Quit...
Poem by anonymous
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all up hill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest! if you must; but don't you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As everyone of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don't give up, though the pace seems slow;
You might succeed with another blow.
Often the goal is nearer than
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the victor's cup.
And he learned too late, when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.
Success is failure turned inside out;
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt;
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems afar;
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit;
It's when things seem worst that you mustn't quit.
Yet another follow up: Edward Good claims to have written Don't Quit! Today, I
received the following email.
Dear Rose; For many years now I have been reading all the
junk and rubbish about who wrote the poem"Don't Quit".
You will probably not believe what I am going to say, but it is very important that I tell
the world who the real author of the poem "Don't Quit" is.
I wrote the poem when I was 17 years old just before I joined the Air force. Years later
my mother sent me a copy of the church bulletin that contained a few of the verses of the
poem. Through the years I have seen my poem published on many things such as tablets,
calendars, book marks, plates and so on. Many people have asked me why I had never
tried to have it copyrighted? My answer to that was simple, I felt that if my poem had
helped just one person get back his life or maybe even save a life, that was reward
enough.
But now I am fed up with all the would be phonies trying to claim credit for the poem. I
wrote the poem and I still have three brothers, six sister-in-laws and a few friends still
alive who will swear to the fact that I wrote the poem.
Think about this for a minute. If 19 or 20 other individuals had tried to secure the
copyrights, why were they not given any copyrights? Simple, the copyright service knew
certain facts about when, where and why the poem was written. I applied for the
copyrights and supplied the U.A.Copyright Office with certain facts about when (year),
the location, (City & State). how it was first published and the approximate age and sex
of the person who wrote it.
received my registered certificate from the U.S. Copyright Office in February of this
year. Other than what I had sent them, (information on the poem), I was not asked to
provide any other proof.
If you would like to see a copy of that certificate I will be glad to send you one, but not
on line, I would prefer to do it by mail. If you know anything about the poem I would be
happy to provide you with anything you want to know about it. I still have the original
paper that I wrote the poem on.
