CP Chemistry SCUBA WebQuest Introduction

You are the owner of an Alaskan SCUBA diving certification company. In order ensure the safety of your students, you will create an informational brochure teaching them about the gas laws that affect diving, such as Dalton's Law of partial pressures, Boyle's Law, Henry's Law, and Charles' Law.

The Task
You will use the gas laws to prevent your divers from getting "The Bends or air embolisms, barotraumas, nitrogen narcosis, and oxygen toxicity. Since we are also in cold Alaskan waters, please take this additional danger into consideration as you are preparing your brochure. In order to do this, you will: Take the SCUBA Quiz online Do the Interactive: Diving Deep Determine what SCUBA stands for and how it works. Identify how Boyle's Law, Charles' Law, Dalton's Law, and Henry's Law influence divers with increased depth. Define "the bends/air embolisms, barotraumas, nitrogen narcosis and oxygen toxicity. Determine how cold water concerns should be addressed in your pamphlet. Put together a tri-fold pamphlet to distribute to your divers. The pamphlet must have 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. a title page giving some information about your company an introduction to SCUBA page one page for "the bends" and air embolisms one page for oxygen toxicity one page for nitrogen narcosis and the last page is dedicated barotraumas.

Pages 3-6 should contain an explanation of each condition using the appropriate gas law, physiology, symptoms, and treatment. A model (series of molecular level diagrams) explaining how gas laws are related to this condition. Beginning Activities Science News for Students: This is an article about Pressure and SCUBA diving. You should begin by reading this. https://student.societyforscience.org/article/pressure-scuba-diving Scuba Quiz: Below is a list of links to several SCUBA quizzes. Take at least one of the quizzes to show what you already know about diving and gas laws.

This gives some information about each of the potentially dangerous conditions facing divers. Keep in mind that this example takes place in the North Atlantic diving to search a sunken ship, however the conditions apply to any cold water dives. Record some notes as you complete this interactive so that you know what types of information you will need to research to complete your pamphlet. This URL should bring you to the PBS website and the link to the interactive can be found on the lower right hand side of the page:

The Process

1.

Prepare a section in your notebook (at least 4 pages, but maybe more) to be used to take notes, draw sample models, and include references to the pages you visit and gather information for this assignment. These notes will be checked, so keep accurate notes of all that you do and the dates that you complete each item. 2. Read the Science News for Students article and jot down any notes/interesting information that sparks your interest so that you can research it further. 3. Take at least one online quiz about SCUBA diving and gas laws to discover what you do and dont understand about the sport. Record notes about which questions you got wrong so that you know what types of information you will need to look up and learn about. 4. Complete the Interactive Diving Deep. Again, record notes about which types of information you will want to learn more about through your online research. 5. Begin a new section in your notes (1/2 to 1 page depending on the size of your handwriting) for each subject that must be covered on the pamphlet and remember to site your sources for each idea so its easy to find again. 6. Continue to gather more information on "the bends or decompression sickness, air embolisms, oxygen toxicity, nitrogen narcosis, and barotraumas. Also, look at the web pages and your notes to write down the connections with the gas laws. 7. Start putting your pamphlet together. Remember that you need the following pages: Title page/introduction to your company An overview/introduction to SCUBA page One page each for "the bends," nitrogen narcosis, oxygen toxicity, and barotraumas. 8. When writing the information in your pamphlet, be sure to write it in YOUR OWN WORDS. There will be NO cutting and pasting or quotations. 9. Make sure that you give credit to any web page or book author whose information you used. In order to save room on the pamphlet, you may print your reference page on a separate piece of paper. You may also use pictures from the web, but once again, you must give credit. 10. Turn in your pamphlet on time.

Hints and Suggestions

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Get your background information first before you start putting your pamphlet together. Nobody should even be thinking about layout until the notes have been gathered. Make a timeline for yourself and stick to it. Keep your data organized. You will need to use some homework time in order to get this project completed by the due date. If you miss class this week, spend equal time working on this project at home.
