RIVER THAMES
London has no beach but theres a river called River Thames which has lots of bridges. The most important bridge is the Tower Bridge. They open the Tower Bridge when there is a big ship.

BIG BEN
The Big Ben is the symbol of London. It is a big clock tower and it is part of the Houses of Parliament.

THE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT


The Houses of Parliament are located next to the River Thames. There are more than 1,000 rooms. The Houses of Parliament was a royal palace in the past, but now it is used for political meetings.

WESTMINSTER ABBEY
This cathedral is next to the Houses of Parliament. It is one of the oldest buildings in London. Every King and Queen has been coronated in Westminster Abbey since 1066.

THE BRITISH QUEEN


The British Queen, Elizabeth II, was born on the 21st April 1926 and she is Queen since the 6th February 1952. Her birthday is officially celebrated in Britain on the 2nd Saturday of June each year and this celebration is the Queens Birthday Parade. The Official Title of the Queen is: Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. She was coronated at Westminster Abbey. The Queen does not normally use a surname (she doesn't need a passport or a driving license), but on the few occasions where it has been necessary, she has used the surname Windsor. How old is the Queen?

WHERE DOES THE QUEEN LIVE?


The Queen of England has lots of homes. Sometimes she lives at Buckingham Palace in London and sometimes she lives at Windsor Castle in Windsor.

THE ROYAL GUARD


Every day, lots of tourists stand in front of the palace to watch the Changing of the Guard. The guards wear red jackets and bearskins (very big black hats). They must not smile or talk at the tourists when they are working.

THE TOWER OF LONDON


In the Tower of London you can find the Crown Jewels. The Tower of London was a prison in the past. The responsibility for looking after the prisoners was given to the Beefeaters. The Beefeaters are guards.

THE LONDON EYE


The London Eye or Millenium Wheel is a giant wheel (135 m tall) located next to the River Thames. It was built in 2000 and it is now one of the most popular tourist attraction in London.

TRAFALGAR SQUARE
In the middle of Trafalgar Square you can find Nelsons Column. In the southeast corner of Trafalgar Square is an old police phone box which is famous for being the World's smallest police station.

BOBBIES
A nickname for British police is bobbies. Sometimes policemen in London ride horses. Usually, they wear very dark blue uniforms, white shirts, and tall black helmets.

DOWNING STREET
The house at number 10 in Downing Street is the Prime Ministers house. The current Prime Minister of UK is David Cameron.

BLACK TAXIS
There are more than 21.000 taxi drivers in London and these have to remember the name of 25.000 streets. To become a taxi driver in London you have to study maps and drive round the city for about 2 years.

DOUBLE-DECKER BUSES
A double-decker bus is a bus that has two storeys or decks.

THE BRITISH AND THE TEA


The British population drinks about 200,000,000 cups of tea a day. Tea arrived to Britain from China, but at the beginning it was only for the very rich. Later on, it became cheaper and people from all classes started drinking it. But some people thought that too much tea was bad for your health. So they started putting milk in it to make it healthier!
