Academic project:
Title: Study of Thermal Response of an Optical Viewport of a Re-entry Vehicle. Team size: 2. Project At: Vikram Sarabai Space Center (VSSC) Govenment of India, Thumba, Trivendrum, Kerala. Description: This project is aimed to evaluate the thermal response of an optical viewport (Quartz Glass) of a re-entry vehicle. Experimental studies were carried out in two different modes. First, an attempt was made to simulate the required heat flux with Infrared radiation. Since, the quartz glass is transparent to radiation it was coated with high emissive black paint to absorb the radiative heat. During the course of the test the black paint got degraded. To conform the results, the specimen(Quartz Glass) was tested in a convective heat source, where the heat load is simulated. At the end of the convective test, the back wall temperature reached to 470C. After the test, the specimen was physically intact. A one dimensional thermal analysis of the quartz glass was carried out. A transient heat flux boundary condition was used in the model, considering the radiation and convection losses. Material properties as a function of temperature were incorporated in the program. The predicted and measured temperature was comparable.
