NICK COHEN/The Sun
Consider this one time you can be noisy in the library. Two to four year olds gather together for Parachute Play at the Pinelands
Library for a half hour of playing parachute games, singing songs and of course a bubble dance party. Danielle Haubrich, the youth
service librarian said the program became so popular, that she is now offering two sessions.

Proposed

increase
By NICK COHEN

The average homeowner in
Tabernacle may have to dig a lit-
tle deeper in their pocket in 2014,
as the introduced municipal
budget includes a tax increase of
approximately $59, according to
municipal accountant Kevin Fre-
nia.
The townships recent re-
assessment is partially responsi-
ble for the proposed tax increase.
On average, the value of the
town went down, tax assessor
Jay Renwick said at the town-
ships workshop meeting on
March 10. The average residence
saw a decrease in value of 10.84
percent. The tax rate has to go up
if the assessed value of the town-
ship goes down.
The average assessed value for
homes in the township dropped
from $296,220 to $264,109.
Township administrator Doug
Cramer presented the budget to

Team will present a seminar on
the topic of concussions spon-
sored by the Brain Injury Al-
liance of New Jersey.
Dr. Sarah Levin Allen, neu-
ropsychologist and certified

cuss a variety of topics including:
concussion myths and facts, what
a concussion is, physical symp-

Allen is a licensed pediatric

ic, social and emotional develop-
ment of students. She also works
closely with medical and school
professionals to design and imple-
ment "return to school" program-

The Tabernacle Athletic Asso-
ciation is currently accepting ap-
plications for its fourth annual
college scholarship award, re-
named this year to honor one of
its beloved representatives who
unexpectedly passed away in
2012. Now titled The Chad Adams
Memorial College Scholarship
Award, the fund provides two col-
lege scholarships annually, one to
a female student and one to a
male student, who meet all eligi-
bility criteria and best reflect
TAAs mission of fostering sports-
manship, dedication, honesty, loy-
alty and commitment to commu-
nity.
At the time of his passing,
Adams served as TAAs vice presi-
dent and was actively involved in
the soccer, baseball, softball and
basketball programs.
In addition to providing
strong organizational leadership
for all of TAA, Chad embodied
the spirit of a warm, supportive
coach who served as a positive
role model for children and
coaches alike, TAA president
Lynne Hedden said. Board mem-
bers voted unanimously to dedi-
cate the TAA scholarship award
in Chads memory. We are hon-
ored to recognize Chads out-
standing contributions to the or-
ganization and enhancement of
youth athletics in Tabernacle
through this scholarship award.
To be eligible for The Chad
Adams Memorial College Schol-
arship Award, applicants must
have participated in a TAA sport,
completed the 11th grade with
plans to attend a form of post-sec-
ondary education (two- or four-
year college, trade school, etc.),
and submit the completed appli-
cation by April 30. Scholarship
funds range between $750 and
$1,250 per winner. For more infor-
mation and to obtain a copy of
the application, please visit

departments would potentially
see increases or decreases.
Engineering services and pub-
lic works will both see increases
in 2014. Cramer said the township
received two recreation grants in
2013, as well as a community de-
velopment block grant.
We have projects that have
carried over from last year that
will be completed this year. The
snack stand at Patty Bowker
Park, the Tuckerton Road proj-
ect, Cramer said. The grants do
cover some of the cost, but the
township is still responsible for
the survey and architecture
work.
Tabernacle and Shamong
Township have a joint service
agreement for the repaving of
Tuckerton Road and are awaiting
word on the status of a state De-
partment of Transportation
grant to finish the project.
Mother Nature is most respon-
sible for the expected bump in the
public works departments budg-
et.
Public works will see an in-
crease to cover salt purchases
that are more than $30,000 already
this year and repairs are $10,000
more than we expected. We are
cutting the road striping program
and solid waste collection to keep
costs down as best as we can,
Cramer said.
Discussions over the township
entering into a shared services
agreement with Southampton
Township for municipal court
services will continue throughout
2014, but as of now, that is not
part of the proposed budget.
Once the budget is introduced,
the committee must wait 28 days
before holding a public hearing.
The budget will be presented to
the public at next months regular
meeting, which is scheduled for
Monday, April 28. The committee
can elect to amend the budget if
the public raises concerns, and
depending on the changes, it can
still be adopted at that meeting or
tabled if large changes need to be
made.

T
hursday. It cant come soon
enough. Officially, thats the
start of spring. Whether Moth-
er Nature agrees, though, is anyones
guess at this point. Early forecasts
show that she will be good to us, but
how much can we actually rely on
forecasts?
Spring is what we all need. We need
a nice stroll downtown, in the park or
on the beach to reinvigorate us, to get
us out of the doldrum into which win-
ter plunged us. Winter this year has
not just affected all of our moods, it
has affected our bottom lines, too.
Well all most likely be paying more
in taxes, in some way, at some level, for
the extensive snow removal, pothole
repairs and salt purchases.
Snow has affected local businesses
as well, especially retail shops. Bad
weather kept patrons inside from what
seemed like October through now. The
arrival of spring will hopefully turn
that around, and quickly.
Snow kept our schoolchildren at
home which, at the time, they loved
but it will also keep them in school
much longer into the summer. Who
knows how that will affect summer
travel plans? It looks like June 2014
might be scratched off from summer
altogether.
Snow and biting cold has kept peo-
ple in the mindset of no end in sight,
and has prevented many from taking
day trips to our states wonderful good-
weather spots, or from planning future
trips, as well.
In a little more than 60 days, the offi-
cial start of the summer beach season
will be here. Does that even sound
right?
New Jersey relies heavily on
tourism, especially at the Shore dur-
ing the summer. Last summer was
hurt by the aftermath of Hurricane
Sandy. Will this summer be hurt by
more bad weather?
Lets hope not.
in our opinion
Hello, spring, are you here yet?
Our moods, our businesses, our livelihoods depend on your arrival
Your thoughts
What are you most looking forward to this
spring? While you are out and about
enjoying what hopefully will be beautiful
weather, send us the photos you take
along the way, and well be happy to share
them with the rest of the town.
