Adolf Hitler becomes ruler of Germany. He starts to make the German army stronger.

March 1938
German soldiers take control of Austria (the Anschluss). Germany and Austria become one country - this was not allowed by the Treaty of Versailles.

March 1936
German army marches into the Rhineland - this was not allowed by the Treaty of Versailles.

September 1938
German soldiers march into German-speaking parts of Czechoslovakia (the Sudetenland).

June 1935
Britain tells warships. Germany that they can build

The Munich Agreement: the British and French let Hitler take control of the Sudetenland. Hitler promises to take no more land.

Hitler makes the German army bigger.

October 1935
Italy invades Abyssinia in Africa.

November 1936
Germany forms an alliance with Italy, and later with Japan.

April 1937
The Spanish civil war: German planes drop bombs on Guernica in Spain.

March 1939
The Germans drop bombs on Prague. They take control of Czechoslovakia. Britain and France promise to help Poland if she is attacked by Germany.

April 1939
Italy invades Albania.

August 1939 May 1937


Neville Chamberlain minister. becomes British prime Hitler and Stalin agree not to fight each other. They agree to divide Poland between Germany and Russia.

1st September 1939


Germany invades Poland.

July 1937
Japan invades China.

3rd September 1939


France and Britain declare war on Germany.
