GRANT NARRATIVE
CREATIVE ENGAGEMENT GRANT
Please keep your narrative to no more than four pages, using 11-point font. The narrative should make a convincing case that your proposal meets the intent of the grant program and is achievable. Please address the following prompts in a manner that is clear and concise. Review the application handbook for helpful hints and tips. Project Title: SE Portland Neighborhood Kickball Tournament

1. Please describe your project, its goals and desired outcomes. Be as specific as possible about
the projects scope, design and components. Your response must address how the project will help to promote neighborhood-level community involvement.

It is known that where you live matters to your health. Health-related problems are strongly associated with the social characteristics of communities. Factors such as poverty, employment, family structure and the race/ethnicity of a community can help predict how healthy its residents are even when individual attributes and behaviors are taken into account. But recent research has shown that communities with strong social cohesion have positive effects on health status. Ultimately, this project is about neighborhood engagement, personal health and a fun time.

Building neighborhood connectedness is not only beneficial to own personal health but also shapes healthy and stronger communities.

The SE Portland Neighborhood Kickball Tournament, involves six neighborhoods (BrentwoodDarlington, Mt. Scott-Arleta, Woodstock, Creston-Kenilworth, Foster-Powell, and Lents). This project is designed with three components in mind: Engage neighbors with neighborhood association activities Neighborhood fundraiser Family friendly fun

The vision is that each neighborhood will play an opposing neighborhood (a bracket will be set-up and agreed upon) and the final winner will be crowned with the title of, SE Portland 2014 Neighborhood Kickball Champions. There will be a suggested $5.00 donation to play for participants 18 years of age and older. The money collected will go to the winning Neighborhood Association for the game played. The last championship game, all neighborhoods will be invited to watch and support. In addition cold drinks and snacks will be provided at all games.

Before each game there will be a short informational overview about Neighborhood Associations: Who we are and what we do, when and where we meet, what projects we are currently working on, how to find out more information online, how neighbors can get involved, and answer any questions that community members may have. This family friendly neighborhood game of kickball will lead to additional promotion of neighborhood associations activities and volunteer recruitment.

The most important impact that these neighborhood games of kickball will provide for is the opportunity for neighbors to get to know one another which promotes healthy communities which can lead to better personal health outcomes. 2. Please describe the interactive component of your project in detail. These family friendly games of kickball are both socially and physically interactive. Unfortunately, the benefits of neighboring arent always appreciated on the street. In 2010, the Pew Research Center released a report on how neighbors communicate. 28% knew none of their neighbors by name. 46% of Americans talked face-to-face with neighbors about community issues in the prior 12 months, this means more than half did not. A full year is a long time to go without talking face-to-face with a neighbor about life in your shared community. While there are a growing number of people keeping track of neighborhood activities via digital tools like blogs, email, Facebook, and other social media, can that really take the place of a chat over the back fence or a holiday gathering of neighbors?

These family fun kickball games are intended to get people outside in our Portland neighborhood parks to not only learn more about neighborhood association but to meet each other and have fun. When neighbors have a chance to meet each other and talk, friendships and communities are built. Engaging in more neighboring activities will help make our communities more friendly and safe for all to enjoy.

3. Where will your project be located? Will permits or approval be needed to use the space? If
applicable, please describe your plan for obtaining any permits or approval.

The neighborhood kickball games will be held in local southeast Portland parks. Brentwood Darlington Park Woodstock Park Kern Park Lents Park

4. Please describe your groups capacity (skills/resources/partnerships) to complete this project. MSA will help coordinate kickball game dates, times, and locations between Neighborhood Associations. We will also help to promote the kickball games via fliers and online social media to help spread the word. In the last two years MSA has partnered with Foster-Powell, Lents and Brentwood-Darlington Neighborhood Associations. We have a successful track record of partnering with surrounding Neighborhood Association on projects.

5. Please describe how the neighborhood association(s) will be actively involved in the design and implementation of the project. Neighborhood Associations will be actively involved in the following project activities: Working together coordinating dates, time and location of kickball games Promotion of the Kickball Tournament Representation at the Kickball game for the NA discussion and other outreach information. Beverages and snacks pickup and delivery Clean-up after game

6. Please provide a draft timeline for your project. Include dates and activities related to planning,
creation, installation, exhibition, events, etc.

Time Line for Project 1) April- May (work with NAs for tentative dates and times of Kickball Games (July 2014) 2) May (receive grant funds) 3) May (confirm with NAs on dates of Kickball Games 4) May June (promote event, create fliers to be distributed, social media promotion of the event 5) July - August (Kickball Tournament)
