President’s Message___________________________________________
Aloha!

It’s been quite a month since the last President’s Message, to say the least.
First, on Sunday, September 22nd we put on the Healthy Baby Finals at Ala Moana
Center Stage. Our chapter and a few good friends did a fantastic job running the
show, which resulted in a new Healthy Baby crowned live on KSSK.

Then HCJ stepped up proudly for our part in the great ‘Adopt A School Day’ on
Sunday, October 11th. Many of our great members came out to the Hoo Cho Chinese
School that day to put in a full day’s work.

We got the entire building covered in a new coat of paint, including the front lanai, side and back steps and even
the front walkway! The school hadn’t been painted in at least 15 years so this was long overdue. We can all be proud
of the great effort we gave to this worthy school.

And yes, that was us on the KHON news that same night. VP Krystal Lee represented HCJ with class and pride in
her interview with KHON. Plus we all got to do the Shakas for the closing credits. Not a bad day!

What’s Next?
We’re not taking a break even after all that, though. We've got a full couple of months left before the New Year.
But the big question on all our minds is about YOU.

Have you thought about being on the HCJ Board? We’re getting ready for our HCJ Board Elections for 2010
and need your help. Let me say that being on the HCJ Board was one of the best decisions I have ever made. It is The
Key to self-confidence, personal growth and rewarding community service involvement.

You also get to know a lot of great people in the best way possible – by working together. If you want to learn
how to stand out and step up in your career and strengthen every other aspect of your life, I can’t recommend
anything better than being on the HCJ Board. I can guarantee that because it made such a difference in my life.

If you’re wondering about the opportunities or positions on the HCJ Board, just ask me or any of the other Board
members.

Remember, we’ve got our great Halloween & Christmas Parties coming up, just turn to Page 5 for details on that
as well as all the other great projects your chapter has on the calendar.

We’ll see you soon!

Your Friend,
Jonathan Cook

_________________________________ Healthy Baby Contest Finals

The 56th Annual Healthy Baby

Contest went off just like every other year.
And that’s a good thing. Why? Because
HCJ once again put on a great pageant that
celebrated our keiki and showed we get the
job done. 56 years of hard work and great
success is a record we all should take pride
in.

The Wednesday evening before the

Finals was spent at the office of Mr. Ross
Lee who generously allowed us to use his phones. Healthy Baby Chairman Allan Wu, VP Krystal Lee, Ana Che &
President Jon made the calls to notify the babies who had made it to the Finals.

Sunday, September 22nd saw our team arriving as early as 7:30 at Ala Moana to get things ready for the big event.
Chairman Allan coordinated our team as we set up tables, tested fans, got the Registration area ready and prepared the
all important tabulation room backstage.

JCI Old Timers Faye Nakashima & Mike Fujioka generously gave of their time to do the tabulating job,
guaranteeing that our totals would be accurate and above suspicion. Their experience and dedication would play an
important role later…

Fun At The Finals

At 10AM our traditional emcee, Michael W. Perry, took the stage and got things rolling. His understated humor
fits the occasion perfectly with the inevitable, yet lovable mishaps that come with small children. As in previous years
most keiki contestants were much more interested in the columns of balloons than in standing still for the judges.

This resulted in more than a few incidents that required members Anthony Sato &
Jason Tomita to rescue the upturned balloon sculptures.

Like any great contest, Healthy Baby does have its nail-biting moments. The biggest
came with the final tabulations to decide who would be our Healthy Baby. The drama
was dialed up when Michael W. Perry came from backstage to announce that the
tabulators were dealing with what looked to be a tie!

Backstage the numbers were done over and the winner was finally apparent – but only
by the slimmest of margins. Our Healthy Baby was….drumroll……Ezekiel Antonio of
Kapolei! Or as he was known that day, ‘The Kid In The White Suit’!

It was a great ending to another great Healthy Baby Contest. Our team finished up by
passing out the surplus milk, juice & yogurt from Meadow Gold and headed upstairs for
some Japanese cuisine to celebrate. Our hat is off to HB Chairman Allan Wu for all his
hard work, to our HB Committee members and to all our members and friends who came
out and gave so generously of their time and energy.

Adopt A School!________________________________________________
This year was the 2nd annual ‘Adopt A School Early morning on ‘Adopt A School Day’ (Oct 11),

and gloves, courtesy of Ana Che’s cousin, ‘Bunny’.

to say, included HCJers Ana Che, Anthony Sato &
Krystal Lee. After this was done our team moved on to putting
on primer from the bottom slats all the way up to the
overhanging eaves.

With the primer in place we took a break for lunch

inside the schoolrooms to enjoy some grindz. The
vintage desks were a great reminder of old Hawaii
and Hoo Cho’s long history.

After patting our full stomachs it was back to work.

Some of our team climbed ladders to finish the
eaves; others took on the walls and banisters. Even
the front lanai floor got a new coat.
The Hoo Cho School
Our chapter’s specific involvement was adopting
the historic Hoo Cho Chinese School. Almost a
century old, the school once stood just outside
Chinatown, but later moved to Palolo.

They continue in their mission to teach

Cantonese & Mandarin to both children and adults.
We later found out that Past President Paul Chun
attended as a child.

Krystal Lee served as our liaison to Hoo Cho. In the midst of all this we got a visit from KHON.
She had suggested we adopt them after learning They profiled our work and interviewed VP Krystal
about the school through Ross Lee. It was a perfect Lee, who represented us proudly on air. We even got
fit, especially as the school’s board includes Eric to do the Shakas for the newscast ending credits!

The finishing touches were finally applied.
It was decided that we’d paint the school, Anthony Sato gave the school sign a bright new
