Prof. A.K. Ghosh Head, Counselling Service head_cs@iitk.ac.in Dear New Student, I congratulate you on your selection to the Postgraduate (PG) program of IIT Kanpur. I would like to emphasize that our Institute offers excellent facilities for your academic development. Moreover, it has many cocurricular activity centers where you may cultivate your favorite hobbies, or initiate a new one. Electronics, photography, music, aeromodelling and gliding clubs are only a few amongst these. Though the academic pressure here is reasonably high, many students find ample time to make full use of these facilities for achieving all round development. I would also like to encourage you to make use of these in order to fulfill your aspirations and to get the best out of your stay at this Institute. The process of higher learning is very enjoyable for all motivated students. Yet at moments even the best of minds feel lonely and alienated. At such moments companionship and counsel often help. Hence, the Institute's Counselling Service was established with the voluntary efforts of the faculty members and the student community, to help students adjust to the new environment. If you need any help at the time of joining the Institute or later, please do not hesitate to call anyone in the Counselling Service. Counselling team members are always available to help you, as and when the need arises. Remember, we may be able to help you better the earlier your problem is brought to our knowledge.

Letters
Parents are requested to stay in touch with their wards regarding their academic performance or any other problems and consult, if required, the Counselling Service and/or the Warden of the respective Hall of Residence. I regret to mention that due to scarcity of rooms, it will not be possible for us to arrange accommodation for parents and guardians accompanying the students. However, a list of hotels in Kanpur with their addresses and contact numbers is provided in the Counseling Service website, which you may refer for accommodation purposes. I am sure that your stay at IIT Kanpur would be fruitful and enjoyable in every aspect. Wishing you the very best and looking forward to meeting you personally.

Academics
IIT Kanpur follows a two-semester system. An academic year runs from July to April. The first semester begins by the last week of July and ends in the last week of November. The second semester starts in the last week of December and ends in the last week of April. A semester load is defined as equivalent of 16 units. Most courses carry 4 units, while a few carry 3 or 5 units. The Dean of Academic Affairs (DOAA) heads the academic administration of the Institute. The Institute offers courses in various disciplines of engineering, science and humanities, both at UG and PG levels. These programs are planned and implemented by the Academic Senate through the Senate UG Committee (SUGC) and the Senate PG Committee (SPGC). In addition to these two committees, the Senate has a number of standing Committees such as the Senate Scholarships and Prizes Committee (SSPC) and the Senate Students' Affairs Committee (SSAC). All committees have representation from the student community. Examination System The Institute follows a continuous evaluation model through a credit system in all its programs. The student is awarded a letter grade for each course in which he/she is registered. There is no annual/semester pass or fail. However, a student has to satisfy the minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) and earn credit requirements to be eligible for the award of degree. In case of unavoidable circumstances, a student may be allowed to give a make-up examination.

13

The Institute
Grading System Each course is assigned a numerical weight. Each letter grade carries numerical points. A list of these letter grades with the corresponding numerical points is given in Table 1. Table 1: Grade Scheme Grade Points students are awarded either a S (Satisfactory) or X (Unsatisfactory) letter grade depending on the instructor's assessment of the student's progress in the semester. The performance of a student at the end of every semester is evaluated in terms of the weighted average of grade points secured in all registered courses for that semester and is known as Semester Performance Index (SPI). The Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) represents the weighted average of grade points secured by a student in all the semesters up to and including the last semester. The method of calculation is the same as for SPI except that an F grade which has been replaced by a pass grade is ignored in the calculation.
