MUSC 1014: Introduction to Music in History 2 Classical Test Study Guide The Big Questions: With a score and

a recording provided, be able to assess the genre, style, and possible composer of an unknown work and offer ideas of how you might perform it in a historically informed, stylistically appropriate manner. In essence, be able to make historically-informed, practical decisions that you can apply to your own musicmaking. Be able to identify features of the galant style, Empfindsamer Stil, Sturm und Drang, and the learned contrapuntal style and assess how they coalesced into the high or mature Classical style. (Hint: See HWM, p. 477 for a start) Be able to identify key precepts of Enlightenment philosophy and assess how this is reflected in musical style, patronage, and musical culture. Be sure to bring the concept of absolute music and the public concert into your discussion. (Hint: HWM, pp. 468-476 is a good overview) How did changes and reforms in 18th-century opera reflect changes in 18th-century society and musical taste? What were Glucks main principles in reforming opera? Be sure to discuss Mozarts Le nozze di Figaro and Die Zauberflte in your response. Be able to diagram the 19th-century (3-part) sonata form model and contrast it with the 18th-century (Koch, 2-part) model. What principles remain consistent through both of them? (Hint: See HWM, pp. 511-514) Be able to identify key features of Domenico Scarlattis musical style and his approach to the keyboard sonata (e.g. a focus on harmonic structure, pedagogical function, etc.). How might Scarlattis relative isolation from Europes musical centres have affected his stylistic development? (Hint: See HWM, pp. 515-520 for this one and the next question) Be able to identify key features of C.P.E. Bachs keyboard sonatas and contrast them with Scarlattis. How do C.P.E. Bachs sonatas blend the galant and Empfindsamer styles? How does the development of the string quartet reflect the changing musical and cultural landscape of the 18th century? By examining the genre, what can we learn about 18th-century attitudes toward aesthetics, pleasure, amateur music-making, and what musical styles and elements were important to Enlightenment society? Compare and contrast the styles and functions of the divertimento and the symphonie concertante. What do they have in common, musically? Where do they diverge? Assess each genres place in the musical culture of the 18th century. Be able to describe a typical mature Classical concerto (e.g. Mozart or Haydns, for example). What features and forms are you likely to encounter? How would you describe the musical style? Why was Mannheim such an important centre for orchestral music? What socio-political factors influenced this and what role did Stamitz play in making Mannheim a musical powerhouse? For what was the Mannheim court orchestra known, musically? (Hint: Start w/ HWM, pp. 521-522, and expand w/ your class notes and my lecture notes, which Ill post on D2L) Be able to trace the development of the symphony from its roots in the Italian sinfonia through the high Classical symphony of Mozart and Haydn. Be sure to stop in Italy, Mannheim, and Vienna along the way!
