2. Looking at your table of factors: Which numbers have an odd number of factors? -1,4,9,16,21,25 What are these numbers called? - perfect square/ square numbers Describe why these numbers have an odd number of factors. Use the term factor pairs in your explanation. -Factors normally come in pairs however a square numbers have a square root ,which only is one factor (as they are the same number) so therefore they have odd number of factors. For Example - 2 x 2 =4 and 1 x 4=4 therefore 4 has 5 (odd) factors 3. Looking at your table: Predict how many factors the number 36 will have. 9 as it has to have more than 18 (as 18 is half 36 so they share factors) but is also a square number (6 x 6) so the number has to be odd. Furthermore new factors such as 36 (1 x 36), 4 (to join up with the 9 derived from the factors of 18) and 12 (to join up with the 3 derived from the factors of 18) adding to 9 factors overall. Test your prediction. -Start of with 1 and 36 -Then work your way upwards for example move from 1 to 2 and write thenumber that multiplies with it to form 36 on the opposite side -Continue until both sides meet 1 2 3 4 6 9 12 18 36 -9 factors in total -Colour shows matching numbers that multiply to 36 4. Extension Part 1 -The actual number of factors for each number is actually double than the numbers shown above -This is because even though factors tend to be whole numbers they can also be negative as - x - = + -The end result is double the number of factors than listed above with half of the numbers being negative versions of the positive integers - For example 2 is shown to have two factors 1 and 2 (1 x2 =2) however -1 x -2= 2 therefore 2 actually has 4 factors twice as more than before

Part 2 -When squaring numbers the number that is squared is equal to the number of required odd numbers to be added together to be equal to the value of the squared number for example: 1x1= 1 1 2x2= 4 3+1=4 3x3=9 5+3+1=9 etc. Part 3 The prime factors of an integer multiplied together equal the integer value. For example: Prime factors of 12: 2, 2, 3 2x2x3= 12 Prime factors of 22 : 2,11 2x11= 22
