Flushing Procedure for

Cooling Water System

INTRODUCTION
The cooling water system is designed to accommodate the heat dissipation requirements
of the lubricating oil system, atomizing air system, purge air system, generator heat
exchangers, turbine supports and flame detector mounts. The components of the cooling
water system are located on the gas turbine base and the accessory module. Components
include heat exchangers, butterfly valves, orifices, ball valves and temperature regulating
valves, it is very essential to maintain the internal cleanliness of circulating system to
maintain proper flow and efficient heat transfer. The system piping and equipments are
cleaned by circulating water at higher velocity. The cleaned system piping is filled with
softened water with necessary corrosion inhibitors to protect the system against
corrosion, scaling and fouling. The details of the water treatment chemicals and dosing
proportions are covered in system commissioning procedure

1.

SCOPE OF WORK

The scope of works includes the cleaning of complete system piping and equipment from
construction debris and foreign particlesetc by flushing with water. The flushing of the
system is carried out in two stages.
STAGE I

This stage includes the flushing of site installed piping with bypassing the
accessory base, gas turbine and generator components.
STAGE II

This stage includes the flushing of the entire cooling water system.

2.

PRE-REQUISITES

3.

Flow restricting Instruments, orifice plates and control valves on the system
shall be removed.
Hydro testing, blowing out of the system piping are completed.
ACW pump to be tested and commissioned.

EQUIPMENT ARRANGEMENT FOR FLUSHING

The system pumps will be used to flush the CCW system piping of the cooling water
system. Additional strainer mesh screen of size 250 micron will be lined to the existing
strainer for flushing purpose. The pressure gauges mounted on the system piping will be
used for monitoring the differential pressure across the strainer during the flushing
operation.

Flushing Procedure for

Cooling Water System

STAGE I
Closed loop flushing is carried out using softened water.
Line up the system pumps, valves and system piping for water filling and
circulation as indicated and marked on the attached flow diagram.
Fill the water to the system piping using the softened water system.
Vent the air from high point vents on the piping, then, ensure that the piping
is vented properly and the piping is completely filled with water.
Carryout the pre commissioning and commissioning checks on the system
pumps as per GE procedures and start the pump.
Check for any leaks at the temporary looping of pipes and take appropriate
action.
Monitor the pump strainer differential pressure, check and clean the strainer
as required until the system is free of foreign particles.
Stop the pump after successful completion of flushing operation.
Completely drain the water from the system piping using low point drains to
the nearby catch basin.

STAGE II
Normalize the system piping to circulate the water through the complete
system, including generator cooling coils, lube oil coolers atomizing air,
purge air system, turbine supports and flame detector mounts.

ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA

Pump suction strainer is clean and free of foreign particles.
