Common Core/ NM Content Standards: NMVA 1, 4, 5

Essential Question(s): What is the art nouveau style and how was it visible in visual arts as well as in architecture, furniture design, etc.? Who was Alphonse Mucha? How can I create a piece of art in the Art Nouveau style? Other considerations (modifications, accommodations, acceleration, etc.): Students who are struggling will get more one-on-one assistance Students who are advanced will get the opportunity to make an additional poster or add more detail to his/her story

Connections (prior learning/prior knowledge): Students are familiar with painting from previous projects.

Resources/Materials Teacher: Images of Japanese woodblock prints, art nouveau posters, works by Mucha, art nouveau furniture etc. Students: Large heavy duty watercolor paper, acrylic paint (including metallics), cardstock for stenciling, brushes, water containers

Lesson activities for instructor and students I. Describe Art Nouveau style --started as a reaction to academic art --Arthur Mackmurdo's book-cover for Wren's City Churches (1883)
is often considered the first realisation of Art Nouveau. -About the same time, the flat perspective and strong colors of Japanese wood block prints, especially those of Katsushika Hokusai, had a strong effect on the formulation of Art Nouveau

-1894 Alphonse Mucha went into a print shop who needed poster for a play that was coming out in Paris starring the famous Sara Bernhardt --in 2 weeks Mucha did a design and it was chose. It was placed all around the city. --poster was very popular and as a result owner of print shop gave him a six-year contract -while he was happy to have become famous he was frustrated that his designs were considered a fashionable stylistic form - he wanted recognition for his paintings because to him their purpose was to communicate a spiritual message -Lived in Paris for many years, but later in life moved back to Czech Republic -in the late 1930s his artworks were considered reactionary nationalism -in 1939 when Nazis came into Czechoslovakia he was the first to be arrested by the Gestapo -developed pneumonia while in custody. -although he was released soon after he died, and some think he got weak while in custody of Germans -Czechs are very proud of him and have a museum dedicated to him in Prague
