A Winning Legacy
Hideo Pops Yoshimura and his namesake company are legendary in the world of motorcycle racing. Pops story begins in Japan, where he established his personal reputation working on the BSAs and Triumphs of servicemen stationed there. In 1954 Pops took his ambition to the next level, launching the company Yoshimura in Japan and quickly becoming renowned for giving his customers the competitive edge they craved. With success in Japan as his foundation, Pops set a new goal: racing in Americas Daytona 200. The next step toward achieving his dream was to open Yoshimura Research and Development of America, Inc., which he did in 1971 in North Hollywood, California. In 1976, the AMA established the ofcial Superbike series with its rst event at of course Daytona. Yoshimura took on the competition with a young Kawasaki rider named Wes Cooley. Wes nished fourth at Daytona that inaugural year, and in 1977 Yoshimura and Cooley followed with a third-place podium nish. Then came the breakthrough year of 1978. Yoshimura made a historic switch by forming a business relationship with Suzuki. Yoshimura had been able to breathe re into the Kawasaki, but with Suzuki he had the chance to work with a bike that handled. Results were instantaneous: Steve McLaughlin on a Yoshimura- built GS1000 won the Daytona Superbike race for Yoshimura and Suzuki. Proving the win was hardly a uke, Team Yoshimura racers Ron Pierce, Wes Cooley and Dave Emde nished 1-2-3 at Daytona in 1979. From 1978 through 1981, Yoshimura and Suzuki won four straight Daytona Superbike races, with Cooley winning the 1979 and 1980 AMA Superbike titles as icing on the cake. In 1981, Pops went back home to Japan, while his son Fujio Yoshimura stayed in America to take Yoshimura R&D of America to the next level. When Pops retired, Fujio headed home to run Yoshimura Japan. In his place, Suehiro Watanabe (Nabe) became the head of Yoshimura R&D of America. In 2005, Nabe decided to focus on the Research and Development operations of Yoshimura, and Don Sakakura became the head of Yoshimura R&D America. Today, Don also oversees the day-to-day operation of the Yoshimura Suzuki Road Race Team, Team Yoshimura Suzukis motocross and supercross team and the companys collaboration with Factory Honda Racing and GEICO Honda Racing. To bring Pops story full circle, he came out for Daytona every year after his retirement. In his later years, Pops enjoyed his accomplishments and he never lost the passion to win. Pops passed away in 1995, leaving a legacy that will live on in the history of Superbike racing.

Yoshimura Exhausts
There are many ways to increase the performance of a sport bike, but the best and most effective way is by increasing the efciency of the engines exhaust system. In fact, the engines ability to produce power is directly proportional to how quickly it can expel spent gases. Over the last ve decades, Yoshimura has invested millions of dollars in R&D and manufacturing equipment to ensure that were on the cutting edge of exhaust system technology matching motorcycle engine advances stride for stride. Where tubes used to be cut with hacksaws and bent by hand over a torch, we now have CNC cut-off saws to accurately cut pipes to length while multi-level CNC tube benders shape pipes to exact specications. Despite these advances, including the use of computer-controlled robot welding machines, weve remained true to our commitment to weld our pipes by hand. Our racing and R&D groups combine science and art including hand-crafted design and manufacturing to extract a level of performance from our exhaust systems that simply cannot be rivaled by any high-tech gadget or tool in the world.

If you want to win, youll need the best engine performance you can get. Yoshimura offers three basic levels of engine performance upgrades.
Stage 1 Stage 1 is the basic hop-up that best ts the average racer. This is the correct choice if you are racing in the C or B class (beginner or novice). Stage 1 has excellent reliability yet gives the racer a healthy dose of power when used in conjunction with a Yoshimura pipe. Stage 2 Stage 2 is for the racer who is a top contender in the intermediate or B class. The compression is upped, the head modied, and a Yoshimura billet cam tops off the Stage 2 list. The increase in compression will require more maintenance, but all in all, the Stage 2 engine kit provides a very strong yet reliable engine. Stage 2A is a completely assembled engine. Stage 3 Stage 3 is a full-tilt racing engine featuring big horsepower gains. This is the choice for a serious amateur or pro rider who is looking to win and will accept nothing less than the best. Every part of a Stage 3 engine is manicured or modied; even the gear sets and internal transmission parts are polished and matched using our in-house Yoshimura Isotropic Surface Finish Process. Stage 3 is a completely assembled engine.
Camshafts Yoshimura has been making high-end camshafts for more than 50 years. We started out designing Superbike camshafts, but have since expanded the line of camshafts to include motocross motorcycles and ATVs. Yoshimuras expertise and years of experience in building the best camshafts in the business is legendary. All Yoshimura camshafts are constructed from onepiece billet or blanks, not re-grind. As a result, our cams not only perform at the highest level possible, but they are also extremely durable.
BEFORE
AFTER
ENGINE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS Yoshimura has been a leadership company in EFI management for years. By the time all these other guys gure out what we already know - the race will be over. Check out our race proven PIM2 units for off-road racing applications, and our Em Pro for road racing applications. They have a long track record of performance, durability, and ease of use.
ISF Process
Yoshimura has an in-house Isotropic Supernishing Process (ISF) department, and thats where we can blueprint your engines gear sets just as its done on Formula 1 machines. This technology allows your engine to run more freely through decreased friction and proper interaction of reciprocating parts. Even though typical ISF treatments include gear sets and internal transmission parts, all of the reciprocating parts will benet from the ISF process. We use this same process on our 240-horsepower Superbike racing engines, as well as 70-horsepower Motocross/ATV racing mills. The mirror-like nish reduces friction on all reciprocating surfaces, reducing drag and increasing durability. It also reduces heat signicantly, which makes for a smoother-running engine. After ISF treatment, every reciprocating part interacts smoothly and the combined reduction in friction unleashes previously trapped power. Unleashing trapped power, lowering operating temperatures, and giving your machine that winning feeling is a good thing.

This is Motorcycle Industry Councils interpretation of California law and regulations related to after-market exhaust systems. MIC has prepared this information in an effort to clarify related issues for dealers in California. What exhaust systems and slip-on mufers can a California dealer sell or install without violating California air pollution control requirements? After-market exhaust systems that can legally be sold under Californias air pollution control requirements are (1) systems that are designated replacement parts, (2) systems considered modied parts for which an Executive Order has been issued, and (3) systems only for use on racing vehicles that have been adequately identied as such. What exhaust systems and slip-on mufers are considered replacement parts? Under California Air Resources Board (CARB) regulations, Replacement parts are parts that have the same effect on emissions as the original equipment part that they are intended to replace. In the case of exhaust systems for motorcycles and ATVs, CARB considers after-market exhaust systems to be replacement parts if either of the following conditions is met: 1. The vehicle was not originally equipped with a catalyst and all emission controls originally connected to the exhaust system are reconnected to the after-market exhaust system and are functioning properly. (It is rare for other emission controls to be connected to a non-catalyst motorcycle or ATV exhaust system, but examples include an exhaust gas oxygen sensor or an air injection system.) 2. The vehicle was originally equipped with one or more catalysts, but the catalyst(s) are retained and all emission controls originally connected to the exhaust system (e.g., an oxygen sensor) are reconnected to the after-market exhaust system and are functioning properly. As long as they meet the above denition of replacement parts, slip-on mufers are legal for use on the road unless the mufer being replaced contained a catalyst. How can I tell if a modied exhaust system has been approved? Modied parts are components that are designed to perform differently from original equipment components with respect to emissions control. Under CARB regulations, any exhaust system component that replaces an original equipment catalyst or eliminates a provision for an exhaust gas oxygen sensor or some other emissions control device connected to the exhaust system is a modied part. After-market part manufacturers are required to provide a label to identify modied parts that have been approved for sale. The label will indicate the manufacturers name, device name and a valid Executive Order (E.O.) number assigned by CARB. The format of the E.O. number is D-xxx-xxx, where xxx is a series of designated numbers. The label is either afxed directly to the part itself or included with the part with instructions to install it in a visible location. When can I sell a modied exhaust system without a CARB label? Parts for Racing Vehicles may be sold under certain circumstances without CARB approval. Under Health and Safety Code Section 39048, the term Racing vehicle is dened to mean a competition vehicle not used on public highways. Under California Health and Safety Code Section 43001, air pollution control requirements do not apply to racing vehicles. Exhaust systems for competition vehicles not used on public highways are also exempt. CARB allows the marketing and sale of modied parts for competition use only provided an adequate disclaimer is used in any advertising and packaging. Can I install an unapproved after-market exhaust system that was purchased by the owner from out of state? Installation of unapproved after-market exhaust systems is legal only if the systems are replacement parts or being installed on a |motorcycle or ATV for competition use only.
