Lesson Plan

Class: 3/4G Date: Time: Start: 11.30 Finish: Key Learning Area: HSIE Lesson Topic: Mapping Wiradjuri Country

Recent Prior Experience (specific relevant concepts, skills and values the school students have experienced prior to this lesson): Prior lesson the students learnt about the diversity of Aboriginal Australia, their prior knowledge of cultural, community, religious groups. Syllabus Outcome(s): One or two only. Please note the syllabus reference number AND write out in full. Indicators of Learning for this lesson: Behaviours that contribute toward achievement of outcome(s). Quote syllabus numbers. Must be clear, specific, observable. Curriculum Content Strands may be used as headings. By the end of this lesson, the students will: - CCS2.1 Describes events and actions related to the British colonisation of Australia and assesses changes and consequences. - observation of mapping techniques used -demonstrates an awareness that Australias human heritage spans many thousands of years. - listen to discuss and replies to questions -investigates the local area to identify the peoples who originally lived there and those who live there now. Assessment: Strategies which will be used to assess learners attainment of learning outcomes. Should be linked to each learning indicator.

INTRODUCTION Timing (mins) Teaching Strategies / Learning Experiences: (How it is taught) Write detailed steps showing what the teacher (T) will do and what students (Ss) will do. T- In our last lesson on Original Inhabitants of Australia what did we learn? Introduction 5mins Ss- reply with what they remember of the previous lesson. T- so we know that the Aboriginal people are the original inhabitants, and that Aboriginal people have been here for thousands of years, and Europeans for only 200 of those years. Today we are going to learn about the Aboriginal country we live in and locate it on the map. Resources and Organisation:

DEVELOPMENT T-Using an Aboriginal languages map on the interactive whiteboard, point out the diversity of Aboriginal cultures in Australia, talk about the amount of Aboriginal countries there are in Australia and explain to the students that each Aboriginal country have their own language. Jointly locate the Aboriginal language group for your local community. Find the names of the Aboriginal peoples who came from the area now known as Sydney. T-Ask students where they came from, if they came from somewhere else other than our local area. Locate these Aboriginal nations. Ss- reply with their answers on where they came from. T-With this map (worksheet) we will draw in the Aboriginal country we are in now (Wiradjuri). Get students to go back to their desks and start on their mapping. Ss- go to their desks and draw the Wiradjuri country onto their maps. T- Explain to students that each Aboriginal country has its own language and that the surrounding countries of Wiradjuri have some words that are similar. This was so that Wiradjuri people could communicate to these nations to trade or to travel through their country. Extension-For students that complete the task early. The students can name and label the surrounding Aboriginal countries of Wiradjuri country. CLOSURE T- Ask students questions: what did we learn in this lesson? What did you find interesting? What would you like to learn more about? Ss- discuss their answers as a whole class. T-take notes of student replies.
