Brasilian Bottom

A monokini, sometimes referred to as a unikini, is a women's one-piece garment equivalent to the lower half of a bikini. The term monokini is also now used for any topless swimsuit, particularly a bikini bottom worn without a bikini top. In !"#, $udi %ernreich, an Austrian fashion designer, designed the original monokini in the &'. %ernreich also invented its name, and the word monokini is first recorded in (nglish that year. %ernreich's monokini looked like a one-piece swimsuit suspended from two halter straps in the cleavage of bared breasts. It had only two small straps over the shoulders, leaving the breasts bare. )espite the reaction of fashion critics and church officials, shoppers purchased the monokini in record numbers that summer, though very few monokinis were ever worn in public. *y the end of the season, %ernreich had sold +,,, swimsuits at -.# apiece, which meant a tidy profit for such a minuscule amount of fabric. It was not very successful in the &'A, where although allowing the se/es equal e/posure above the waist, have never accepted it for the beach. 0any women who wanted to sunbathe topless simply wore the bottom part of a bikini. 0anufacturers and retailers quickly adapted to selling tops and bottoms separately. %ernreich later created the lesser known pubikini. 'ome swimsuits are designed specifically for swimming competitions where they may be constructed of a special low resistance fabric that reduces skin drag. 1or some kinds of swimming and diving, special bodysuits called diveskins are worn. These suits are made from spande/ and provide little thermal protection, but they do protect the skin from stings and abrasion. 0ost competitive swimmers also wear special swimsuits including partial bodysuits, racerback styles, 2ammers and racing briefs to assist their glide through the water thus gaining a speed advantage. &nlike regular swimsuits, which are designed mainly for the aesthetic appearances, swimsuits designed to be worn during competitions are manufactured to assist the athlete in swim competitions. They reduce friction and drag in the water, increasing the efficiency of the swimmer's forward motion. The tight fits allow for easy movement and are said to reduce muscle vibration, thus reducing drag. This also reduces the possibility that a high forwards dive will remove a divers swimwear. 'tarting around .,,,, in an effort to improve the effectiveness of the swimsuits, engineers have taken to designing them to replicate the skin of sea based animals, sharks in particular. In 3uly .,,!, 1I4A voted to ban non-te/tile 5non-woven6 swimsuits in competitive events from ., ,. The new policy was implemented to combat the issues associated with performance enhancing costumes, hindering the ability to accurately measure the performance of swimmers. 'ubsequently, the new ruling states that men's swimsuits may ma/imally cover the area from the navel to the knee, and women's' counterparts from the shoulder to the knee. 'ome swimmers use a speciali7ed training suit called drag suits to artificially increase drag during practice. )rag suits are swimwear with an outer layer of looser fabric - often mesh or nylon - to increase resistance against the water and build up the swimmer's endurance. They come in a variety of styles, but most resemble a looser fitting square-cut or swim brief. Swimwear :As the swimsuit was evolving, the underwear started to change. In the !.,s women started discarding the corset, while the 8adole company of 9aris started

developing something they called the :breast girdle:. )uring the %reat )epression, panties and bras became softly constructed and were made of various elastici7ed yarns making underwear fit like a second skin. *y !+,s underwear styles for both women and men were influenced by the new brief models of swimwear from (urope. Although the waistband was still above the navel, the leg openings of the panty brief were cut in an arc to rise from the crotch to the hip 2oint. The brief served as a template for most all variations of panties for the rest of the century. ;arner standardi7ed the concept of 8up si7e in !+<. The first underwire bra was developed in !+=. *eginning in the late thirties skants, a type of skanty men's briefs, were introduced, featuring very high-cut leg openings and a lower rise to the waistband. >oward >ughes designed the push-up bra worn by 3ane $ussell in the The ?utlaw in !#+. In !<, 0aidenform introduced the first official bust enhancing bra. *y the !",s, the bikini swimsuit influenced panty styles and coincided with the cut of the new lower rise 2eans and pants. In the seventies, with the emergence of skintight 2eans, thong versions of the panty became mainstream, since the open, stringed back eliminated any tell-tale panty lines across the rear and hips. *y !=,s the design of the 1rench-cut panty pushed the waistband back up to the natural waistline and the rise of the leg openings was nearly as high . As with the bra and other type of lingerie, manufacturers of the last quarter of the century marketed panty styles that were designed primarily for their se/ual allure. This decade marks the se/uali7ation and erotici7ation of the male body through advertising campaigns for brands such as 8alvin @lein, particularly by photographers *ruce ;eber and >erb $itts. 0ale bodies and men's undergarments were commodified and packaged for mass consumption, and swimwear and sportswear were influenced by sports photography and fitness.

of the wearer's body while other designs provide only e/tremely minimal coverage. Topless variants are still sometimes considered bikinis, although they are technically not a two-piece swimsuit. ;hile the name bikini was applied to the skimpy fashion that first revealed the wearer's navel, the fashion industry considers any two-piece swimsuit a bikini. 0odern bikini fashions today are characteri7ed by a simple, brief designC two triangles of fabric that form a bra and cover the woman's breasts and two triangles of fabric on the bottom forming a panty cut below the navel that cover the groin in front and the buttocks in back. The amount of coverage can vary widely, from a string bikini with very little coverage to a full design with ma/imum coverage. A topless swimsuit may still be considered a bikini, although naturally it is no longer a two-piece swimsuit. Micro Bikini : A string bikini is scantier and more revealing than a tanga bikini. It gets its name from the string characteristics of its design. It consists of two triangular shaped pieces connected at the groin but not at the sides, where a thin :string: wraps around the waist connecting the two parts. 'tring bikini tops are similar and are tied in place by the attached :string: pieces. 'tring pieces can either be continuous or tied.
