Sound Solutions
The equipment suggestions and quotes here-in reect solutions to the proposed action plan in the Sound Meeting Summary sent to you previously. I will list suggested practical steps in implementing the action plan in improving your sound and equipment; they are designed so that Staples Mill Road Baptist can implement the steps individually as you are able, or all at once. Proposed Action Plan Overview (reminder from Sound Meeting document): 1. 2. Implementing capabilities to give those on the stage power over what they hear in their monitors. Implement, possibly through a combination of gear and training, tools that will make the sound techs responsibilities easier and with greater capability. This will also address the advised use of best practices when running a rehearsal, sound check, and relationships between the tech crew and those on the stage. 3. Address physical needs of the choir area as well as monitoring. This may include addressing the loud air ow of the A/C, as well as sound treatment on the walls. A combination of sound absorption and diffusion may be necessary. This will need to be evaluated and calculated by a trained acoustic professional for further recommendations. Will explore alternative monitoring solutions for the choir loft. 4. Address physical needs of the sanctuary walls. Possible diffusion needed on back wall in order to reduced the slapback reections those on the stage hear. As stated above, this will need to be reviewed by a trained acoustic professional.

In my opinion, xing the monitor issue for the musicians on stage is the number one priority. This will give the musicians condence in what they are playing, and self-reliance that their mix will be what they need, while allowing the sound team to concentrate on the house mix and the monitor mix for the vocals (if you continue to use the current oor wedges). Each step may be comprised of 1 or more solutions, and cost of each. Please keep in mind that these prices are based on what each item normally sells for online. Im condent that nal ofcial quote from the retailer will prove less than quoted price.

Step 1 - Personal Monitor

Cost Range: <$4000-$7000

Option 1: ProCo Momentum

! ! The Momentum system is composed of several pieces of gear: input modules (8 channels each), the mix engine, and the Tweak personal mixer station. In its base configuration, each musician that has a Tweak can mix 8 audio signals (sent from the main mixers direct outs), and is expandable to 32 audio signals. Expandability of this system is vast in that its possible to have up to 32 audio mixes, and an almost limitless number of Tweak units. Personal mix signal lines can be configured to work with any sort of personal monitor (headphones, in-ears, powered speaker). The system is designed in such a way that would allow you to start small and expand as you go. The Tweak mix stations are wireless. System configuration can be adjusted via computer. Mixes can also be adjusted with available iPhone/iPodTouch App in stead of Tweak. Units connect via standard CAT6 network cable. *Im currently trying to setup a live demo at your church for the ProCo unit for your team Component Estimated Costs: Mix Engine $2250, mi8 input module $1150, Tweak stations $375/ea ! Estimated System Cost ! ! ! ! ! ! Config 1: Base 8 Channel Personal Monitor Setup w/ 5 Tweak mix stations: $5275 Config 2: Expanded 16 Channel Personal Monitor Setup w/ 5 Tweak mix stations: $6425 Misc cables (CAT6, audio cables): $250 Optional Units: headphone amps - $20-$30 each, Small powered speakers - $200-$300, head- ! phones $20-$100/ea Ambient Mic(s): Strongly suggested that ambient room mics are installed $100-$300

Option 2: Aviom

! ! The Aviom system is more basic as far as configuration and is more cost effective. It does not have as much expandability as the ProCo system, but is easier in configuration. However, you get 16 channels of personal mixing as its base configuration. Units interconnect via standard network CAT5 cable which is inexpensive and easy to run. Personal mix stations can be endlessly daisy-chained to other personal mix stations to provide all 16 channels to each personal mix station. The optional distributor removes the need to daisy chain units and it also powers the mix stations via the CAT5 cable. Otherwise, you must plug each mix station into a power outlet. The number of A16ii Personal Mix Stations can be adjusted as you wish. For example, you can start with 2 and add on as you are able. Component Estimated Costs: AN16/i Input module $1100, Distributor (optional) $1295, A16ii Personal Mix Stations $620/ea ! Estimated System Cost ! ! ! ! ! ! Config 1: Base 16 Channel Personal Monitor Setup w/ 5 A16ii Aviom mix stations: $4200 Config 2: Same as Config 1 adding the optional Distributor: $5495 Misc cables (CAT5, audio cables): $200 Optional Units: Mic stand mount $30/ea, Small powered speakers - $200-$300, headphones ! $20-$100/ea Ambient Mic(s): Strongly suggested that ambient room mics are installed $100-$300

Step 2 - Digital Mixing System

Cost Range: $4000-$6600+

Option 1: Presonus StudioLive

! ! The Presonus StudioLive comes in a 16 channel version, and a 24 channel version. You can daisy chain up to 8 units together to expand your number of input channels. I would recommend at least 2 of these units to meet your digital mixing needs. Ideally, two 24 channel units to give you a full 48 channels of mixing - enough for now and room to grow. Alternatively, you can connect a 24 channel and a 16 channel unit together to make a 40 channel mixing surface. The bare minimum would be two 16-channel units to match the current 32-channels that you have. The 24 channel unit gives you 10 aux sends plenty for floor monitor mixes, sending mixes to the personal monitor mixers, and sending audio elsewhere. The 16 channel unit gives you 6 aux sends. Each unit has 4 sub mix groups, 2 FX banks for effects such as reverb and delay, direct outputs on every channel (necessary for the personal mix system), scene store and recall (set your sound on practice night and recall it on Sunday). It also features compression, limiting, and expanding on every channel. The StudioLive has a Firewire interface which allows you to not only daisy-chain several StudioLive mixers, but also connect it to a computer for simple recording all the way to full multitrack studio-like recording. The VSL program allows you to mix from the computer, which also makes it possible to mix the sound remotely (wi-fi) from a laptop or iPhone/iPodTouch from the seats or even on the stage. This is the best digital mixing system out there for the cost. I have a 16 channel unit that I can bring to give you a demo. Component Estimated Costs: StudioLive16 $2000, StudioLive24 $3300 ! Estimated System Cost ! ! ! ! ! Config 1: Two StudioLive24 units, 48-channels of mixing/recording: $6600 Config 2: One StudioLive24 unit, one StudioLive 16 unit - 40-channels: $5300 Config 3: Two StudioLive16 units, 32-channels of mixing/recording: $4000 Misc cables and connectors: $200 Optional system configurations: Add a computer to the setup $?

Option 2: Yamaha LS9, Yamaha M7CL, Allen&Heath iLive

! ! The Yamaha digital mixing systems are popular and very good. They have some good expansion options in the form of expansion cards. There is a card available for Aviom output that would make the Aviom input module unnecessary, saving you some cost. The Yamaha and A&H systems are rather expensive when compared to the Presonus. The minimum you could do would be the LS9 32 channel version. I simply listed these to give you an idea of the next stage of digital mixers up from the Presonus, which does not necessarily mean that they give you a lot more than the Presonus. There are features the Presonus has that these do not, and vise-versa. If youre interested, we will work out details on configuration and pricing. Component Estimated Costs: Yamaha LS9-32 $12,000, Yamaha M7CL $16,000-$19,000, Allen&Heath iLive $12,000-$20,000 !

Step 2.1 - Installation/Training

Installation and Training of Sound Team and Worship Team
! ! Depending on the gear options chosen, installation and training will vary. My goal will be to implement a smooth transition to the new gear for both the worship team and the sound team. For the personal monitor mix system installation, I will install and configure the system, and lead a session with your worship team members and sound crew to teach them how to use the mix stations properly. Also as part of the plan, I will hold a 2-hour training session with your sound team (whether or not a digital mixer is installed) to explore best mixing practices, team interaction, and worship involvement. If digital mixing system is installed, training may be longer or having an additional session. I will install systems, configure, train you team members, and offer follow-up support. Will also include further evaluation of your system. ! Installation & Training Cost ! ! ! ! ! Config 1: Installation of full system - personal mix, digital mixer, team training: $1000 Config 2: Installation of partial system - personal mix system, team training: $600 Config 3: Installation of partial system - digital mixer, team training: $600 Cost includes follow-up support

Step 3 & 4 - Choir Loft Eval.

Cost Range: n/a

Further Evaluation of Choir Loft

! ! With consideration to the monitoring issues in the choir loft and the choir members not being able to hear the monitor mix without cranking the volume to levels that become uncontrollable, I would like to explore the setup of what you have further before making any equipment upgrade suggestions. I would like to manipulate the EQ and evaluate how its all working together. If we can use what is there and just make it work better, then that would be most cost effective and prove good stewardship. Features on digital mixer could also help this problem. As for the wall treatment - we would possibly want to look at a combination of sound absorption and diffusion. An acoustic professional would need to evaluate this issue and make recommendations. See below for suggested professionals. Component Estimated Costs: n/a ! Estimated System Cost ! n/a

Acoustic Professional Recommendations

! ! To evaluate the walls of the choir loft (and sanctuary if desired), an acoustic professional should be contacted to determine what the best course of action is for wall diffusion and absorption treatment. I would be happy to contact Michael and, along with you, meet with him in the sanctuary to evaluate course of action. Please let me know if you would like for me to take care of this for you. I have worked with Michael before on studio construction and he is great at what he does. Michael Binns Acoustical Solutions 2420 Grenoble Road Richmond, VA, 23294 Phone: (804) 346-8350

Conclusion Please discuss and pray about these options. Some of it may be hard to fully understand whats involved and how the gear works. I would like the chance to meet with you again to go over the information in this document so that I can make sure you have a full understanding of exactly what options you have and so I can have a better understanding of what options you are leaning towards. Again, thanks for letting me help you and your team!
