Conservation Proclamation Week 2: Call to Action-Water Conservation Lesson 1 (1 day) Duration: 50 minutes Objectives o Students will bring awareness

to all that they have learned regarding both the Water Cycle and the World Water Crisis by creating a glog using Glogster. California State Standards for Earth Science o Students know that the amount of fresh water located in rivers, lakes, underground sources, and glaciers is limited and that its availability can be extended by recycling and decreasing the use of water. Common Core State Standards English-Language Arts CCSS for 5th Grade o SL-Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas.4: Report on a topic or text or present an opinion, sequencing ideas logically and using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace. o SL-Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas.5: Include multimedia components (e.g., graphics, sound) and visual displays in presentation when appropriate to enhance the development of main ideas or themes. o RI-Integration of Knowledge and Ideas.7: Draw on information from multiple print or digital sources, demonstrating the ability to locate an answer to a question quickly or to solve a problem efficiently. o RI-Integration of Knowledge and Ideas.9: Integrate information from several texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgeably. Technology Standards (ISTE) 1. Creativity and Innovation o a. Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes. o b. Create original works as a means of personal or group expression. Prep/Materials o Access to at least 12 iPads (most likely a visit to the Computer Lab) o Teacher Glogster account ($39/year) *If this is not a feasible option, Google Drawing (drive.google.com) is a similar tool and is free. Instruction (Teacher Input) o Inform students that they will be creating a glog for the first time. Glogster is a way to make online posters. It is very easy to use, with a drag-and-drop interface. Students can include text, audio, images, video, and links to create interactive posters. o Walk students through a demo of how to create a glog. Students will log into their Glogster accounts and create a demo glog as you walk them through it using the projector.

o Students will quickly realize how user-friendly Glogster is. Make sure to remind students that some of their glogs they create during todays lesson will be featured in the schools upcoming Open House. o Todays glog will feature aspects of the Water Cycle as well as the World Water Crisis. The purpose of these glogs is to bring awareness to these issues, as well as to showcase what students have learned during the course of the past two weeks. Students will curate content based on what they have learned and highlight their understanding through their glog. Independent Activity/Technology Integration o Students will be given approximately 40 minutes to complete their blog with a partner. After walking through the demo (approximately 10 minutes), students will create a new glog. o Each groups glog must feature content on both the Water Cycle and the World Water Crisis. Students are encouraged to add video to bring their glog to life. o Students who would like to challenge themselves and make their glog interactive may want to embed a Google Form asking some questions about the information presented on the glog. o Each groups glog must feature at least one video, 5 images, 4 text boxes with at least one paragraph in each box, and at least 2 links to websites. This criteria must be met before students publish their glogs. o Once each group has been given the OK to publish, students will need submit a link to their glog by submitting it in a provided Google Form (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1WYHiZwhHx3UHK6J8kXcg6tUj0xht1tdTag5oBwNnck/viewform).
