The callery pear tree, a
native to Asia, was rst intro-
duced to the United States
in 1909 and now inhabits 25
states.
According to the Chicago
museum of science and
industry, the tree is often
described as smelling like rot-
ting sh or even some parts
of the human body when it
blooms in early spring.
Wikipedia describes the
smell as, a cross between
rotting sh and semen, and
Urban Dictionary references
the callery pear tree as, the
semen tree.
The distinctive smell is like-
ly caused by a combination of
amines, which are chemical
compounds commonly found
in body odors, according to
Business Insider. The odor
assists the tree in attracting
potential pollinators.
Although the tree is
referred to as the callery pear
tree, the fruit that follows the
ve-petaled white blossoms
is not edible. The tree is com-
monly used for landscaping
because of its low mainte-
nance qualities, durability and
white owers in spring.

the season (Nevada is 5-10 outside

State has struggled on the year, the

OPTIMIST SAYS: After a loss to UC Davis
and a home series against Grand Canyon,
the Wolf Pack is ready to remedy its road
woes in a big way. While sluggers Austin
Byler and Brad Gerig have struggled thus far
on the season, both are primed for a break
out series. In the same vein as Byler and
Gerig, pitcher Tyler Wells will look to return
to his 2012-2013 form against SJSU.

The versatile junior has been making a name for himself this season as the top pitcher for the Spartan
rotation. Contrades made 19 starts last season at third baseman/ designated hitter for San Jose State
and also had 20 appearances out of the Spartan bullpen. After batting .316 on the year and tying for
the team-lead in saves with two, the fve-foot-ten Contrades has focused his skills this season on
bolstering the starting fve. So far this year, the native of Hawaiì is leading San Jose State in earned
run average (2.54), hits allowed (24), strikeouts (23) and opposing batting average (.235). He is also
tied for the lead in wins (two) and saves (one). While his batting stats are down from last season,
his additon to the pitching rotation has only served to help the Spartans` pitching staff. While San

Jack Reynoso, of the football team,
has super strength that comes from
the power of his beard. His beard
has helped Reynoso in many areas
of his life such as football skills and getting

Yeah, it`s a fraud. He was actually
going to be the sixth member of
One Direction. He met the boy band back in
London before they made it big. Conroy chose to
leave the group to try out for the Nevada men`s
basketball team. However, word around the
street is that he`s holding auditions to start his
own boy band, and so far D.J. Fenner and Lucas
Stivrins have made the cut. Some of their beats
will even feature Tae Songs.

Although Burton and Reynoso
are strong advocates of the "fear
the beard" campaign, football`s
Brock Hekking is a frm believer
in the power of the mullet. His inspiration for the
hairstyle was Billy Ray Cyrus whom he recently

in the process of growing out his mullet. In an
attempt to encourage both males and females
