Like the Olympics of all intel-
lectually based scholastic compe-
titions, Odyssey of the Mind is a
unique experience for all in-
volved.
On Saturday, March 22, teams
from Haddonfield competed at the
Lighthouse Regional Odyssey of
the Mind competition, which was
held at Haddonfield Memorial
High School.
Teams in all grade levels from
across the state competed for top
titles in categories that involved
art, drama and mechanics.
Its fascinating, said OOTM
parent, volunteer, and high school
OOTM coach Tracy Ricci.
Teams from Haddonfield were
from Central Elementary, Had-
donfield Middle School and Had-
donfield Memorial High School.
Central Elementary entered five
teams, compared to one from the
middle school and one from
HMHS.
We start preparations in Sep-
tember usually youre doing a
lot of conceptual things in the
fall, Cydnee Perman, art teacher
at Central Elementary and
OOTM advisor, said.
Perman explained that she had
heard about the OOTM program,
and shortly after, signed the
school up at beginning of the
year, allowing some students to
compete for their first time.
Perman was randomly given
five problems to solve in differ-
ent categories that are created by
the OOTM organization.
Central entered one team per
problem, and a total of 35 stu-
dents decided to participate. All
Central teams wasted no time get-
ting organized. In late October,
weekly meetings began. Perman
urged adults in the process to let
the students solve the problems
with as little intervention as pos-
sible.
Were very hands-off we let
their creativity pave the way,
Perman said.
Closer to the competition dates
in March, daily practices lasted
until 7 or 8 p.m., according to Per-
man, even for young students.
They worked for months
preparing they come up with
ideas to solve the problem, Lydia
Nevgloski, a first-time OOTM
parent volunteer, said about Cen-
tral Elementarys teams entering
the competitions. Its been really
new to all of us.
To better prepare to make a
moving cart to be used in a per-
formance with a secret-agent
theme, students on Nevgloskis
team toured a Home Depot to get
some design and building tips.
Also entering under OOTMs
Seeing is Believing category of
problem solving was the HMHS
team.
The team used steam-punk ref-
erences, so costumes would ap-
pear futuristic and old-world at
the same time. The high school
teams skit involved two commu-
nities of musicians. Soloists in
one make-believe community
were afraid of singers who sang
in harmony with each other.
Competition an adventure in problem solving
Haddonfield schools take part in Lighthouse Regional Odyssey of the Mind event

The Odyssey of the Mind Lighthouse Regional competition took place on March 22 at Haddonfield Memo-
rial High School. The HMHS team placed first in its division of intellectual competitive category and will
move on to the April 12 state competition in Ewing. Pictured are HMHS junior Christina Eker, senior Alice
May, sophomore Jasmine Timar, sophomore Timmy Stavetski and sophomore Ari Liloia. Not pictured is
coach Tracey Ricci. As a six-year veteran of OOTM competitions, Eker made an impressive working musi-
cal instrument out of items such as plastic water bottles and duct tape. For another photo, see page 24.

There was a first reading of
preservation for a CAP Bank at
the March 25 Haddonfield Board
of Commissioners meeting.
This is an ordinance we pass
every year to preserve our appro-
priations we are limited by
state law this year to only a .5 per-
cent a one-half percent in-
crease, Mayor Jeff Kasko said.
If the ordinance passes on sec-
ond reading at the next meeting,
commissioners will have the abil-
ity to increase the budget by up to
3.5 percent, if needed. All com-
missioners approved of the ordi-
nance on first reading.
The second major item men-
tioned at the meeting was the first
reading of a budget for the Part-
nership for Haddonfield. It was
determined that $345,520 was the
amount of revenue and total ex-
penses used by the PfH for 2013.
In a packet given to audience
members at the meeting, and on
file with the borough clerk, the
PfH breaks down some of the
exact costs it is and will be using
to better Haddonfield this year.
For example, the PfH will fund
$13,000 for holiday lighting down-
town. The PfH mentioned rev-
enues from last years Crafts and
Fine Arts Festival, merchandise
sales and other items as primary
sources of income.
The mayor mentioned that in
accordance with a state-mandat-
ed three-year cycle, commission-
ers will be able to review the PfH
budget, and all other items with-
out aid this year.
This year is a year that we can
do what is called a budget self-ex-
amination, Kasko explained.
After budgetary items are fi-
nalized, the commissioners men-
tioned that the public must have
access to all records. The board
will slightly revamp current poli-
cies in the next year to make doc-
uments such as audits, budgeting
guidelines and locations of proj-
ects more easily accessible.

INTERIMPUBLISHER
Writer: Haddonfield is safe, but
still keep guard up for robberies
I am a stay-at-home mom and wife who
is pretty much home all day. On March 25, I
left my house from 12:40 to 2:15 p.m. to get
my hair cut.
I came home and did laundry, cleaned
my downstairs, had a cup of tea and waited
for my stepchildren to come home from
school.
My stepdaughter had a friend over, and
my stepson went to play with friends down
the street.
All a normal day...until I went upstairs to
measure for blinds in my spare bedroom. I
walked past my bedroom and saw every
single drawer and closet door opened, and
immediately noticed all of my jewelry on
my dresser was missing.
I threw the blinds down and went to my
stepdaughters room, and asked them to go
downstairs and to her friends house. I
called the Haddonfield police, and they
were here in four minutes, along with two
detectives. They were wonderful and made
me feel a lot better about the situation. Ac-
cording to them, this is the typical scene
for the burglaries around here. The rob-
bers go to the master bedroom for jewelry,
and then grab small electronics on their
way out.
I had every anniversary gift, Mother's
Day gift and family jewelry that had ever
been given to me stolen. Things that had so
much meaning to me are gone, just like
that. I never thought this could happen to
us, no matter how many times I've read
about this in the police briefs in The Had-
donfield Sun.
We are good people, and we do the right
things. None of that matters. It can happen
to any of us. Please learn from my mis-
takes and make it harder for these people.
They will come in whether or not your
doors are locked, but lock them all, and
make it harder for them. Don't keep your
jewelry in your master bedroom. Lock it up
T
he states of Colorado and
Washington legalized marijua-
na for recreational purposes in
2012. Could New Jersey be next?
State Sen. Nicholas Scutari is hop-
ing that it will. This week, he is sched-
uled to formally present a bill that
would legalize marijuana in the state
and tax it heavily. His bill would be
modeled after those in Washington
and Colorado, which earned $2 million
in the first month of sales last year.
Scutaris bill plans to tax and regu-
late marijuana much like alcohol, and
he estimates that New Jersey could
earn $100 million per year in revenue
from weed tax.
Anybody that looks at the facts
knows that the war on marijuana has
been a miserable failure, Scutari said
in a press release. Were not delusion-
al about how simple the effort would
be, but I think from a standpoint of
moving this state and this country for-
ward on its archaic drug laws, I think
its a step in the right direction.
From a purely financial perspective,
legalizing marijuana makes sense.
While $100 million may seem like an
inflated number, its probably not out
of the realm of possibility. New Jersey
had 2 million more residents than
Washington as of the 2010 Census and
3.7 million more than Colorado.
Much like alcohol consumption and
gambling, if people are going to par-
take in the practice of smoking mari-
juana, why not reap the benefits of
taxing the substance while at the
same time avoiding the cost of polic-
ing against it?
From an operational standpoint,
New Jersey has two other states to
model its plan after, plus many other
states in the U.S. that have decriminal-
ized the possession of marijuana for
recreational use. The Garden State has
also already legalized its use for med-
ical purposes.
People are also behind its legaliza-
tion. Lake Research Partners released
a poll last year that said 59 percent of
Jersey voters would support a bill
such as this, and an October Gallup
poll said 58 percent of Americans are
in favor of marijuana legalization.
But then, of course, comes the
curveball emotion, morality and ex-
ample.
Just because people do it doesnt
make it right. And just because states
can legalize and tax marijuana doesnt
mean they should.
What example does legalizing mari-
juana set for our children? How far
will we go just to make, or save, a
buck? Or are we just being too prudish
about this weed thing?
in our opinion
Puff, puff, pass ... on lower taxes?
Should New Jersey give green light to legal marijuana? Its an interesting case
Your thoughts
Should New Jersey legalize and tax
marijuana for recreational purposes? Or
would it be doing too much for the
almighty dollar? Share your thoughts

The following reports are on
file with the Haddonfield Police
Department.
On March 21 at 3 p.m., a caller
reported a burglary at a residence
on Lincoln Avenue. The burglary
occurred between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.
An Xbox 360, 25 games, a silver set
and earrings were among the
missing items. Detectives were no-
tified and have processed the
scene. A canvas of neighboring
residents resulted in no found sus-
picious persons or activity on the
block at the time of the burglary.
On March 23 at 9:05 a.m., a vic-
tim living on Mount Vernon Av-
enue reported a theft from his ve-
hicle, which was unlocked and
parked in his driveway. The vic-
tim reported his drivers license,
Bank of America debit card, and
$20 cash were missing from in-
side the vehicle.
On March 23 at 9:28 a.m., a com-
plainant living on West End Av-
enue reported that sometime dur-
ing the night of March 22, his un-
locked Toyota was entered, and
his laptop was stolen from the ve-
hicle. The complainant also re-
ported his wifes unlocked black
Acura was entered, but no items
appeared to be missing at that
time.
On March 23 at 9:46 a.m., a vic-
tim living on Mount Vernon Av-
enue reported a theft from his
motor vehicle. A cellphone and
$35 cash were among items re-
ported missing. A second vehicle
parked in the driveway of the vic-
tims home was entered, but no
items were reported missing.
Both vehicles were unlocked.
On March 23 at 10:11 a.m., a
complainant reported that some-
time during the night of March
22, unknown person(s) entered
his wifes unlocked green Subaru
and stole 30 cents in pennies and
the registration card located in
the car. The incident occurred on
Estaugh Avenue.
On March 23 at 4:12 p.m., a vic-
tim living on Redman Avenue re-

and/or keep it in an unexpected
place.
I was in my dining room giving
the police my drivers license for
their report, and then noticed
that our two laptops were miss-
ing.
Every photo from family vaca-
tions from the last four years was
on those computers. All of those
memories are gone. I am writing
this letter through my iPhone be-
cause I have no computer to type
it.
I was home for over an hour be-
fore I even knew that anything
had happened. The situation
could have been worse, it always
can be.
I'm happy my family is safe. I
feel so violated, angry and sad.
I've lost sleep and sanity, and I
have cried my eyes out countless
times over this incident.
We live in a beautiful and safe
town, but we still need to keep our
guards up. I will still be a kind
and trusting person after this in-
cident. However, I will be in-
stalling an alarm system and sur-
veillance cameras to protect my
home.
I love Haddonfield, and would-
n't want to live anywhere else. It's
unfortunate that being hard-
working people with nice things
makes us targets.

Nomination applications for
the Julie R. Macier Character
Award are available through
April 15, in the main offices of
Haddonfield Memorial High
School and Haddonfield Middle
School.
Nomination forms are also
available at the front desk of the
Haddonfield Public Library. The
Board of Education and Parent
Teacher Association are asking
for help in selecting one eighth
grader and one high school senior
to receive this award in memory
of Haddonfield Memorial High
School student Julie R. Macier.
After Macier passed away from
a hard-fought battle with
leukemia on Oct. 7, 1994, the
awards were established in 1995
to memorialize such a positive
and courageous student.
The nominees for the award
should be Haddonfield eighth
graders or high school seniors
who have exhibited wonderful
character traits, such as courage,
honesty, integrity, sense of
humor, compassion, persever-
ance, friendship, trustworthiness,
patience, respect and faith.
Any or all of the traits exhibit-
ed in nominated students should
be ones that Macier exemplified
in her own life. Nominations
should be submitted not only by
school administrators and teach-
ers, but also students and resi-
dents of the community.
The final deadline to return
nominations to the pick-up desti-
nations mentioned is April 15.

Team member and junior
Christina Eker constructed an in-
strument known as a Seussa-
phone.
Eker mentioned that she made
the instrument out of paper, plas-
tic water bottles, duct tape and a
hidden harmonica. Eker also pre-
formed a rap entirely in German,
to add another, worldly dimen-
sion to the teams overall skit.
The group wanted to represent
the Odyssey mascot in its skit.
We all dressed up like the mas-
cot for Odyssey, which is a rac-
coon so we all wore masks, or-
ange t-shirts and duct tape,
HMHS team member Alice May
said.
The group described meeting
once a week throughout the
school year and every day for
hours after school during the
week leading up to the competi-
tions.
We trash-picked them, team
member and sophomore Ari
Liloia said of materials used for
drums during his groups skit.
The HMHS team ended up tak-
ing a first-place spot at the compe-
tition.
Also taking a first-place spot
was Centrals team solving prob-
lem two, called, Not so Haunted
House.
Parents and teachers marveled
at the intricate costumes all Had-
donfield students created, espe-
cially on such low budgets.
They have a budget of $125.
Our team used many recycled ma-
terials even just some found
wood out on the street, Mary
Devine, Spanish teacher and
OOTM coach, said.
It was a hanger, and I put it on
a belt, student OOTM competi-
tor from Central Jada Eible Har-
gro said, about her fluffy doggy
tail costume, which was mostly
made out of newspapers.
Hargros group used modern
text-talk in their skit to add rel-
evancy and humor to the overall
theme of puppies and penguins
becoming unlikely friends.
Water is refreshing, and we
totes love it, Hargro said in the
play.
Adults in attendance seemed
impressed with the confident
ability students at all levels had
while performing in front of
judges from across the state.
I think what it does is bring
out different traits in kids its
brought out so much creativity in
them Ive seen them blossom
It brings out different sides in the
kids personalities and abilities
that I didnt know they had,
OOTM parent and volunteer
Tanya Stavinsky-Genel said.
Haddonfield teams will com-
pete in Ewing at the state finals
on April 12. To learn more about
the results, please visit

The Rotary Youth Exchange
Program is seeking host families
in Haddonfield to sponsor a for-
eign exchange student during the
2014-2015 academic school year.
These students, who wish to ex-
perience a greater understanding
of our culture and language, will
attend classes at Haddonfield Me-
morial High School.
Hosting an exchange student
from another country is a chal-
lenge and an opportunity. Involve-
ment with an exchange student
challenges a host family to be-
come familiar with another cul-
ture, while providing the opportu-
nity to share a students hopes
and ambitions.
Host families must be able to
provide room and board for the
exchange student.
Parents are also expected to ex-
ercise general parental supervi-
sion over the student, just as they
would their own children, and in-
volve him or her in daily house-
hold chores and activities.
Ideally, the exchange program
tries to have two to three host
families house the exchange stu-
dent, during the students 10-
month stay.
Families interested in this op-
portunity are asked to contact
alfia732@aol.com, or call 694-1884.
Families interested in the pro-
gram are also encouraged to visit
www.exchangestudent.org.

Meals to be packed, sent to starving children
On Saturday, April 12, more
than 800 volunteers will converge
at the First Presbyterian Church
in Haddonfield to respond to the
plea of countless children who
are literally starving to death.
Concerned area people of all ages
will pack 150,000 meals that will
be shipped to malnourished chil-
dren in 70 developing countries
around the world.
The non-profit organization,
Feed My Starving Children, will
deliver bulk food to the Haddon-
field Middle School gym on Lin-
coln Avenue, behind the church,
where the volunteers will pack
the food into six-serving plastic
bags, that they will then seal and
load in boxes for shipping. Last
year, 500 local volunteers packed
109,000 meals that were sent to
schools and orphanages in re-
mote villages in Swaziland.
Money to pay for the food and
supplies was largely raised at a
recent Messiah Sing-Along, held
at Haddonfield Presbyterian
Church.
To register for a two-hour shift
to pack, please visit
www.fmsc.org/mobilepack/event
s. For further information, call
(856) 354-1718, or email uman-
paul@me.com or
