Vintage Vineland { BY VINCE FARINACCIO }
I
An Early Doc
Thanks to one of his six children, we have a good
amount of information about Henry William Cansdell.
I
n its earliest days, Vineland offered
a climate that was a significant fac-
tor in drawing new settlers, and
perhaps the best endorsement it
received came from various physicians
who chose to relocate to this region for
either their own health or that of a fami-
ly member. And in return for Vinelands
therapeutic conditions, the doctors
offered their medical services to the
community.
Rufus Chase, the towns first physician
featured in this column earlier this year,
had been drawn here by the need to find
a better climate than New England for
his wife.
When Vinelands second full-time
doctor, Henry William Cansdell, arrived
in town on April 13, 1865, it was to
address his own health issues at the age
of 57.
According to his daughter Ellens
account of his life in the Vineland
Historical and Antiquarian Society
(VHAS) pamphlet Early Physicians of
Vineland, he had recently served in the
military but was forced to resign his
commission because of ill health in 1863.
After traveling with his wife and their
three youngest children through the
South during the winter of 1864-65, he
decided to visit this area after encounter-
ing a series of ads about Vineland and
corresponding with town founder
Charles K. Landis. He must have been
certain this was the appropriate place to
settle since his daughter writes that he
immediately purchased four lots at the
corner of West Boulevard and Grape
Street and some wild land.
The doctors new home was far from
his origins in London, England, where he
was born on June 4, 1808. He was raised,
educated and began his medical practice
here in this British city. In 1829, he mar-
ried Elizabeth Cardinal, daughter of John
Argent of Essex. After 11 more years of
British life, Cansdell grew restless and
more curious about America. In 1840, hop-
ing he would like the U.S. enough to relo-
cate, he settled in Whitewater, Wisconsin,
where he resumed his practice.
But it was during a return visit to
England for his wifes health that he was
convinced that his home was on the
other side of the Atlantic Ocean. After
two years, he and his family traveled
back to the United States, settling in New
York where Cansdell became a U.S. citi-
zen and continued his medical education
at New York College of Physicians and
Surgeons and Bellevue Hospital College,
graduating in 1857.
Cansdell established a successful
practice in Brooklyn that lasted until the
start of the Civil War. According to his
daughter, it was during a trip to
Wisconsin, where he needed to settle
matters about property he owned, that
he sought and obtained a commission in
the army, first in the Artillery and later as
Surgeon of the 22nd Wisconsin Infantry.
Ellen Cansdell doesnt discuss
specifics about the illness that forced her
father to resign his commission, but the
circumstances apparently were not
promising and the decision to settle in
Vineland rather than return to Wisconsin
or New York may have prolonged
Cansdells life a bit.
What is certain is that it brought the
good doctor to the last location where he
would practice medicine.
Wasting no time, Cansdell made good
use of the property he had purchased and
constructed a comfortable residence and
office upon the lots he had bought and
continued to practice as much as his bro-
ken health would permit. His condition
would limit his practice to barely four
years.
Cansdell did not limit himself to treat-
ing patients in town. As his daughter
notes, He identified himself with the
interests of the town, being a vestry-man
of Trinity church and an interested mem-
ber of the Sydenham Club, an association
composed of the early physicians of
[Vineland]. In his last illness his fellow
members of this club were his devoted
and skillful attendants.
The end for Henry Cansdell came on
January 28, 1869. His daughters tribute
in the VHAS pamphlet fittingly preserves
his local legacy: Of the nine children
born to him six survived himthe three
who came to Vineland with him and
were with him to the last, and three oth-
ers who had married and settled in dif-
ferent western states. Ellen was one of
the three who continued to call Vineland
her home after her fathers death. I

Does and Donts
{ BY PAUL J. DOE, FORMER EDITOR, CUMBERLAND NEWS }
Planned
Obsolescence
M
y wife is forever warning me
to be gentle with our large
and small appliances. Sadly,
Imfromthat generation that
remembers when things were built to last.
But that was way back in the last century.
Of course, I suppose Im also from the
generation that invented planned obsoles-
cence. In fact I think Im from the city
(Detroit) that raised that whole planned
obsolescence thing to a fine art.
Turns out it wasnt such a good idea
because it was one of the things that
opened the door for the foreign auto mak-
ers who were building things to last back in
the late 60s, 70s and 80s.
It took the big brains in Detroit quite a
while to figure out that people wanted
something besides fins and chrome for
their money.
So they improved the quality of their
products and the foreign auto makers low-
ered the quality of theirs and they seemed
to meet somewhere in the middle.
We, as consumers, are left with prod-
uctsboth appliances and autosthat are
much better than they were in the past.
The problem these days is that once the
product starts to need repairs the repairs
cost so much that you might as well buy a
new car or toaster or washing machine.
That problemwith autos, at leastis
that they cost so much that its almost easier
to let themnickel and dime you with repairs.
The computer people have taken that
planned obsolescence thing to a new level.
I remember reading once that the new cell
phones have more sophisticated computers
than the entire Apollo space program.
Christmas before last my son gave me
one of those Nook tablets as a present. I
didnt want it at first butbecause it was so
handyit quickly became a part of life.
I used it to routinely to followthe news,
stay in touch with friends by e-mail (no, I
dont tweet, friend or facebook), and look
up stuff. In fact, it wasnt very long before it
was an integral part of my daily routine.
But not without problems. Twice in the
last year and a half, Ive had to call Burma
or India or Pakistan or wherever it is that
they have their service center.
Both times it cost me a few dollars and a
lot of my patience to have somebody thou-
sands of miles away repair my product over
the phone.
Last week, though, the product went
belly up. Belly up to the point where I
knew it wasnt something they were going
to be able to fix over the phone.
So I took it to a couple of the big box
stores to ask the clerks if, perhaps, it simply
needed a new battery.
No such luck. The computer, the clerks
in both stores agreed, was fried.
That's just the way they are built, the
first clerk told me. After I got pretty much
the same response from the second clerk, I
asked about purchasing a replacement.
He asked where I bought the original.
When I told him it was a present he
asked how computer savvy the purchaser
was. I told him he knew a whole lot more
about computers than I didwhich, of
course, is true of about just about everyone
over age five.
He then told me that I should check to
make sure that he hadnt purchased the
buyer protection plan when he bought it.
If he knows computers, hell have bought
the plan, the clerk said. Well, turns out he
didnt buy the repair planmostly because
he wasnt sure dear, old Dad would ever use
it and it would end up in the Closet of Lost
Appliances, with the other technical mar-
vels he has gifted me with over the years.
Anyway, he bought me another one just
exactly like the previous oneand I mean
exactly. Turns out it was the only one the
store had left in that model because at least
two newer, improved versions have come
out since its inception.
It was also, my son told me, a lot cheap-
er than the first one he got me. So much so,
he said, that he bought the insurance.
Of course, by the time this already obso-
lete one completely breaks down, a com-
puter museum might be the only place
stocking a replacement model.
A final thought: Computer nerds make
great clerks because they seem to have so
much invested in their technological
beliefs. And, I dont mean nerd in any
derogatory sense, since most of the richest
and most philanthropic people in the world
these days are nerds.
The nerd population is shrinking,
though, because there is such a limited
demand for their skill set. Which brings us
back to planned obsolescence: These days
its so much easier to just chuck the old
computer and buy a new, improved one. I

Local Residents Meet Mary
and Matilda
A group of local residents learned more
about the women of Vineland during a
presentation held recently for Womens
History Month at the Vineland Historical
and Antiquarian Society museum. During
the evening, the group had the opportuni-
ty to meet Mary Tillotson, as portrayed by
Society Trustee Nancy Steelman (pictured
at left), and Matilda Landis, who was
depicted by Trustee Joan Hand (pictured
at right).
Steelman, dressed in the controversial
science costume, which consisted of a
shortened dress and trousers, described
Marys interest in health reform that led
to her adopting the outfit. She shared with
her audience a copy of the poster that
appeared in 1874 in the New York Times
after the Anti-Fashion Convention she
staged in Vineland.
Hand, as Matilda, wore a traditional
Victorian blouse and long black skirt, and
discussed her years of learning about busi-
ness from her older brother, Vinelands
founder, Charles K. Landis. She also dis-
cussed the many personal tragedies that
the Landis family endured over the years.
The program was the second in the
Societys 150th anniversary series.
In April, local residents have been
invited to submit photographs to the
Societys Pictures of Vineland contest,
which will conclude with a reception in
May when winners of the contest will be
announced.
For further information about the
Society or upcoming programs and activi-
ties, call 856-691-1111 or e-mail vineland-
history@gmail.com.

Downtown Vineland
{ BY GARY HOLLOWAY, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, VDID / MAINSTREET VINELAND }
Did You
Know...
I
...this about Health Foods Plus, located on Landis
Avenue and owned by Wanda Agosto?
W
ith many people wanting to
eat healthier these days
and adopting a healthier
lifestyle, did you know that
downtown Vineland can cater to those
needs? Well look now at Health Foods
Plus, at 502 E. Landis Avenue. Owner
Wanda Agosto will tell you more:
When I opened Health Foods Plus 13
years ago, my aim was to help the commu-
nity by providing counseling to improve
eating habits and promote healthy
lifestyles. I had studied business adminis-
tration in my native Puerto Rico and alter-
native medicine after I came to this coun-
try.
I am a doctor in naturopathy, have been
recently certified as a health coach by the
Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN), and
I also am certified as a Biomagnetic
Therapist. I can use experience in these areas
to service my customers in many ways.
To support better eating habits, I sell a
full line of organic foods, as well as vita-
mins, minerals, herbs, herbal teas, and simi-
lar products.
I also counsel my clients through the
technique of iridology by studying the iris of
the eye. You pay for the first iris analysis
and, after that, it is free. This analysis is
done in conjunction with their physicians
care. The iris has detailed fibers and pig-
mentation that reflects information about
our physical and psychological makeup. It
identifies how our body reacts to our envi-
ronment and what symptoms to expect, as
well as where we are likely to have more
problems as we age. It also can identify
inherited emotional patterns, which can
create or maintain physical symptoms.
My services also include lifestyle coun-
seling, which may include weight loss, male
and female hormonal or sexual issues,
chronic diseases, as well as spiritual, emo-
tional, or physical anomalies.
I believe Im here because the Lord has
blessed me in so many ways and Id like to
share my blessing with my increasing num-
ber of customers and the community.

n Saturday, Deeks Deli &
Kustard Kitchen celebrated
their Grand Opening under new
management. As it rained, a
lined formed outside the service window
for the free Philadelphia Water Ice. Owners
Bill Gonzalez and Darrell Knowles greeted
guests and handed out giveaways.
Bill Gonzalez is not new to the food
industry. Bill, a member of the Philly Pigs
Pro BBQ Team is a two time NJ State BBQ
Champ. He has added some of his special-
ties to the ever-changing menu at Deeks
Deli. Pork Wing Platter, Pulled Pork with
Broccoli Rabe and Sharp Provolone and
their half pound seasoned cheesesteaks are
just a couple of mouth-watering menu items.
In Kustard Kitchen Bill and Darrell,
using Richmans Ice Cream, have put their
mark on creating a soft serve ice cream that
is creamier, smoother and full of flavor.
They offer a variety of over 30 hard ice
cream flavors, including moose tracks,
cookie dough and mint chocolate chip
along with over 30 types of toppings. In
addition they offer Philadelphia water ice,
smoothies, funnel fries and funnel cakes.
We are committed to providing a great
selection and serving only the highest quali-
ty of sandwiches, platters, deli meats and
ice cream. Customer service is our priority,
said Bill. In addition to retail sales, Deeks
Deli and Kustard Kitchen also provide
catering services for gatherings of all sizes.
Bill and Darrell also believe in giving
back to the community. Deeks Deli &
Kustard Kitchen also offers local non profit
organizations fundraising opportunities
with hoagie sales and ice cream sales.
Deeks Deli & Kustard Kitchen has been
serving their customers for over 25 years,
evolving over the years to create a family
environment that caters to your every need.
Deeks Deli & Kustard Kitchen currently
has eight employees. Darrell stated this
business has served our community for
approximately 30 years and we look for-
ward to another 30 years. I

Money Matters Program
Teaches Youth To Budget
As part of a Money Matters program,
Club teens learned about budgeting
during a field trip to the local Shop Rite
supermarket in Vineland. Several of
the youth were given $20 in cash and
asked to shop to feed a family of four
for a week. The young people were able
to make good decisions and purchase
items on this slim budget. It was an
eye-opening experience because many were not aware that some households in
their own community (and elsewhere) have to budget their money and some-
times have little to work with. Money Matters is a financial literacy program that
teaches youth how to use a checking account, budgeting, ways to avoid debt,
saving for college and becoming financial savvy adults!

DiQuinzio Speaks on
Grant Writing
Rosemary DiQuinzio, owner of NJ
Consulting, recently spoke to members
of the Vineland Service Clubs Council
on the art of grant writing. DiQuinzio
discussed major components of the
grant writing process, best practices
and the challenges of obtaining funding
because the opportunities for non-prof-
its has decreased in recent years. She strongly emphasized the fact that non-
profits that partner with others have a better chance of obtaining funding.

CompleteCare Opens
19th Location
CompleteCare Health Network cele-
brated the grand opening of its 19th
location in MarchUpper Deerfield
Medical Professionals at 1369 Highway
77 in Seabrook. Located in the Upper
Deerfield School Districts former board
of education building, the site adds to
CompleteCares 25-year history of
school-based care. However, it provides
greater access than any of
CompleteCares school-based sites.
The centers location in a public
space allows all members of the com-
munity access to CompleteCares serv-
ices, while continuing to working closely
with the school nurses of the district to
make it a valuable asset to students.
The site opened in early March and
serves patients Monday through Friday
8 a.m. until noon. It features two exam
rooms and is staffed by a doctor or
nurse practitioner and a clinical assis-
tant. Patients can be seen for a variety
of primary medical services, including
common illness and injury, sports and
health physicals. Informed parental con-
sent packets, which detail the new serv-
ices and highlight the benefits of the
site, were sent to parents in the district.
For details about CompleteCare serv-
ices, call 856-451-4700.

TD Bank Offers Options
for Affinity Program
TD Bank has a new and improved
Affinity Program which is simple, free
and easy. It is as simple as mentioning
your interest in joining the program
either by phone or in person. An
account with TD Bank must be opened
before joining the Affinity Program. For
every new checking account that is
opened at TD Bank, $50 will be dis-
tributed to Big Brothers Big Sisters of
Cumberland & Salem Counties. For
every existing checking account, $10
will be distributed to the agency.
For savings accounts, 1/10 of 1%
contribution is paid to the agency
based upon the account holder's par-
ticipating annual average balances.
And best of all, you can do all of this
without any money leaving your
account. In March 2013, the agency
received a check in the amount of
$2,067 for 2012 and prior years. This
year, the agency is scheduled to
receive $1,550 for 2013. All proceeds
from the TD Bank Affinity Program go
towards funding Big Brothers Big
Sisters programs and serving the
youth enrolled in the agency.
There is no better time to enroll in
Big Brothers Big Sisters of
Cumberland & Salem Counties. Last
year, the agency served 281 children
and have set their goals to exceed that
number this year.

Arbor Day Foundation Offers
Free Trees
National Arbor Day is Friday, April 25
this year, and the Arbor Day Foundation is
making it easy for anyone to celebrate the
annual tree-planting holiday. Join the
Foundation in April and receive 10 free
shade trees.
By joining the Foundation in April, new
members receive the following treesred
oak, sugar maple, weeping willow, baldcy-
press, thornless honeylocust, pin oak, river
birch, tuliptree, silver maple and red
maple.
The free trees are part of the
Foundations Trees for America campaign.
These trees provide shade in the sum-
mer and vibrant colors throughout the
fall, said John Rosenow, founder and chief
executive of the Arbor Day Foundation.
Through the simple act of planting trees,
one person can make a difference in help-
ing to create a healthier and more beauti-
ful planet for all of us to enjoy.
The trees will be shipped postpaid with
enclosed planting instructions at the right
time for planting in April or May. The six-
to 12-inch trees are guaranteed to grow or
they will be replaced free of charge.
To become a member of the Foundation
and receive the free trees, send a $10 con-
tribution to Ten Free Shade Trees, Arbor
Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Avenue,
Nebraska City, NE 68410, by April 30, 2014,
or visit arborday.org/april.
Atlantic City Electric Partners
with Arbor Day Foundation to
Offer Free Trees
Mays Landing-based Atlantic City
Electric is offering 2,000 free saplings to
customers to plant.
For the third year, the utility partnered
with the Arbor Day Foundation through its
Energy-Saving Trees program.
An online tool at www.arborday.org/ace
estimates the energy savings a bald cypress
or sugar maple can provide. The website
uses satellite photos of properties in south-
ern New Jersey to estimate cost savings
based on where on the property the tree is
planted.
For example, a single tree in an ideal
location outside a Cumberland County

purpose of honoring Aaron's love of sports and his devotion to his family and friends.
Aaron was a happy, kind and loving boy. He was a friend, a cherished brother and a
loving son. He always smiled and taught those who he came in contact with how to be
a good person. Through the Aaron Ploch Memorial Swimming and Soccer
Scholarship, his legacy is carried on by helping his peers attend college and by sup-
porting various childhood charities. This year, half of the proceeds of this event will be
donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cumberland & Salem Counties. Please join the
Run for Aaron 5K and 1Mile Walk in honor of Aaron Ploch as well as in support of
local student athletes and the children served by Big Brothers Big Sisters of
Cumberland & Salem Counties.
For more information on the Run for Aaron visit www.runforaaron.com.

When
HUMAN RESORUCE
ASSOCIATION MONTHLY
MEETING.
The Human Resource Association
of Southern NewJersey will hold its
monthly gathering on Thursday, April
17 at the Luciano Center on the cam-
pus of Cumberland County College.
Networking begins at 5:30 and the
dinner meeting begins at 6:30.
Denise Keyser, Esq. of Ballard Spahr
will present Internal Investigations
Lessons Learned from the Rutgers
Fallout. The fallout from events involv-
ing the men's basketball program at
Rutgers University has reinforced the
importance of effective workplace
investigations in helping employers
preserve their reputation and protect
the organization in times of crisis.
During this meeting, we will
explore the entire process of work-
place investigation, with a discussion
of the Rutgers story as a helpful illus-
tration of the complexities and risks
involved with handling critical inci-
dents. We will also examine best
practices to follow in conducting
sensitive investigations, from
responding to reported incidents and
conducting an effective inquiry to
determining a response that is
appropriate to the needs of the
organization and the circumstances
at hand.
The Sponsor for the meeting is
Marsh McLennan/Trion. Cost of the
dinner is $45 and reservations must
be made, no later than noon Monday,
April 14, by visiting
