THEORY:
In this method the motor is subjected to direct mechanical loading by attaching a brake drum and water cooled pulley to the motor shaft. A rope or belt is wound the pulley at its two ends are connected to two spring balances S 1 and S2. The tension of the belt can be adjusted by tightening it on the pulley. The tangential force on the pulley is equal to the difference of the two spring balance readings. Torque on the pulley = (S1 S2) r kg.m = 9.81(S1 S2) mm.

Where r is the radius of the pulley in meters and S1 and S2 are spring balance readings in kilograms. Power output = Twatts.

Where N = speed in rpm T = Tourque in Nm Power input (Pin) = VI watts V = motor input voltage I = motor input current. % Efficiency () = 100 %

PROCEDURE:
1. The connections are made a per the circuit diagram. 2. The field Rheostat is kept at its minimum resistance value. 3. Switch on the DC 220v start the motor slowly with the help of 3 point starter under no load conditions. 4. By adjusting field resistance bring the motor to its rated speed. 5. Apply the brake by tightening the handle H1 or H2 such that the filed current does not exceeds the rated value. 6. Tabulate all the meter readings.

PRECAUTIONS:
1. The motor should not be run on no load because it causes dangerous speed. 2. Cool the pulley while performing the experiment by pouring water into the brake drum. 3. Take the readings without any parallax error. 4. Before switch off the supply does not remove entire load on the series motor. 5. Experiment should be carried on within the limits of rated values. 6. Remember to note the multiplication factor of meters. 7. Connections should be made with correct polarities. 8. At the time of starting, keep the motor field resistance at minimum and generator field resistance at maximum position. 9. Check that the speed of motor is constant throughout the experiment. 10. Avoid loose connections. 11. Run the motor without any load because it is a no-load test. 12. After completion of the experiment reduce the load on the motor gradually and switch off the supply.

RESULT:
Efficiency is calculated for the given DC shunt motor under various load conditions by applying load and the characteristics curves are obtained.
