    AMOVEbyWilmarSugarAustraliatoexittheirsugarmarketingarrangementswithQueenslandSugarLimited(QSL) hasbeendescribedasabastardactbyMemberforDawsonGeorgeChristensen. Wilmar,operatorofmillsinSarina,ProserpineandtheBurdekin,announcedthismorningthattheywouldeffectively establishtheirownmarketingarm. ItsamovethatcouldspelltheendforQSL. IcondemnWilmarformakingadecisionlikethiswithoutconsultationwiththeirfarmers,MrChristensensaid. ItisnotrightforamultinationalcompanythathasonlyrecentlyenteredtheAustraliansugarmarkettomakea unilateraldecisiontoessentiallystripsugarcanegrowersoftheirabilitytodeterminetheirownfuture. Therehasbeenalongstandinggentlemansagreementwithintheindustrythatcanegrowershavearightto determinehowatleasttwothirdsofthesugarsuppliedtothemillismarketed. ThisdecisionbyWilmarisabastardact. MrChristensenremindedWilmarSugarAustraliaoftheeventsof2011.QSLforwardpricedaconsiderableamount ofsugaronbehalfofWilmarandQSLsothermills,butduetounseasonalrainandcropdestructionitcouldnotbe supplied. Inthatinstance,theyactuallydidrecognisethegrowersinterests,andsaidyoureinthiswithusandyouhaveto paypartoftheloss,MrChristensensaid. Theyforcedthatongrowersbytakingacutoutoftheirpayments. Welltheycanthaveitbothways.Whentheresalosstowear,growersownthesugar,butwhenitcomesto marketing,growershavenoownershipatall,itsWilmarsdecision. MrChristensensaidthiswaswhypeoplehavesuchmistrustofforeignownership. ThismightbethewayWilmardoesbusinessinAsia,butthatsnotthewaywedobusinessinAustralia,hesaid. TheMemberforDawson,whohasalreadyhadadiscussionwithAgricultureMinisterBarnabyJoyceonthesubject, hasvowedtotakethestrongestpossiblestandagainsttheactionsofWilmartoprotecttheinterestsofgrowersin theDawsonelectorate. Asaresultofthisdecision,Iwillbeactivelylobbyingforalegislativeinstrumenttoprotectgrowerseconomic interestintheirownsugar,MrChristensensaid.

    WilmarSugarAustraliaoperateseightmillsinQueenslandandsixareintheDawsonelectorate.TheyarePlane CreekMillatSarina,theProserpineMill,andthefourBurdekinregionmillsofKalamia,Invicta,Pioneerand Inkerman. TheyalsooperateMacknadeandVictoriaMillsnearIngham.
