More than 65% of total Italian paddy availability from the 2013-14 crop year has already been sold as of April 1. In the week March 25 - April 1 a total of 26,887 tons of Italian paddy were sold. Since September 2013, 942,627 paddy tons have been sold. Last year at this time, 1,008,610 tons (61.2% of production) was sold. There are about 6 months until the next harvest and right now farmers are seeding the next crop; in some areas of Lomardy and Piedmont rice fields have already been flooded. Sales in the week March 25 - April 1 include 9,569 tons of Long A. Total sales of these varieties for domestic market reached 407,213 tons, equivalent to about 76% of beginning availability. Last at this time, sales of Long A were 448,487 tons, corresponding to 58% of total, since beginning stocks were much higher at 771,930 tons. In the same week, sales of Long B were 7,801 tons; since September sale have reached 277,337 tons, equivalent to 56% of beginning availability. Last year at this date, they were 289,883 tons, 66.15% of total availability. Also 8,988 of round paddy rice were sold in this week, reaching 238,014 tons, that means 60.34% of total availability of 394,480 tons since September 2013. Last year at the same date sales reached 244,882 tons, 62.2% of beginning availability fixed at 393,375 tons. As for medium paddy, in the latest week sales were limited to 439 tons; there are only 8,652 tons still available on the market, starting from beginning stocks 28,715 tons, thus about 70% of this is sold. Last year at this time sales were 25,358 tons for the year, 60% of total availability. Beginning stocks in campaign 2012-2013 were much higher, starting from 42,596 tons. The most sold varieties remain Loto and Ariete at 5,086 tons sold last week, followed by Arborio Volano with 1,407 tons, then Baldo with 1,246 tons. Beginning paddy availability (including about 9,000 tons in carryover stocks) for 2013-14 amounted to 1,447,783 tons, down from 1,646,103 tons in 2012-13.

Coping with Stress: The Art of Zen Rice Through Plant Genetics
Apr 02, 2014

Researchers have identified over 1,000 genes in rice that they think may be crucial factors in managing the plants response to both abiotic and biotic stress. Specifically, this research is interesting because scientists previously thought that different sets of genes regulated plants responses to these two different kin ds of stress. This research suggests there is actually a great deal of overlap in the genes that react to stress.Abiotic stress generally refers to stress induced by naturally-occurring factors or factors caused by environmental agents things like drought, flood, nutrition deficiency, or salinity levels. Biotic stress typically includes stress initiated by living things, usually infectious organisms like bacteria, insects, or fungi. There are about 3,800 genes involved in rices stress response process, and researchers Ramakrishna Wusirika and Rafi Shaik found that 1,377 of those genes are involved in both abiotic and biotic stress. Most of those genes about 70% -- are co-expressive, meaning they turn on under both abiotic and biotic stress. The remaining genes tend to turn on for biotic stress and turn off for abiotic stress. To collect the data for this research, scientists analyzed rice plant genes response to five different abiotic stresses: drought, heavy metal contamination, salt, cold, and nutrient deprivation. They also looked at their response to five biotic stresses: bacteria, fungus, insect predation, weed competition, and nematodes. They found that 196 different genes reacted to these stresses, displaying a wide range of expressions. Further developments in this area might lead to a rice variety that has high stress-range tolerance not only tolerance of flood or drought, for example, but of a wide range of both biotic and abiotic stressors.

Oryza Afternoon Recap Chicago Rough Rice Futures Retreat as Traders Foresee Strong Technical Resistence
Apr 02, 2014

Daily Rice E-Newsletter by Rice Plus Magazine www.ricepluss.com News and R&D Section mujajhid.riceplus@gmail.com Cell # 92 321 369 2874

Chicago rough rice futures for May delivery settled 3.5 cents per cwt (about $1 per ton) lower at $15.655 per cwt (about $345 per ton). Rough rice futures pulled back slightly today as the bulls were unable to overcome large sale orders which were layered at $15.700 per cwt (about $346 per ton) and above. As a result of the markets failure to reach the previous days high and with downward pressure limited by nearby technical support noted at $15.610 per cwt (about $344 per ton), provided by the 100-day moving average, prices charted out an inside day and therefore provide little in the way of a technical forecast for tomorrows trade direction. However, todays retracement is likely the result of the speed at which the market rallied over the previous two trading sessions, and thus may be an indication of a market settling into a period of rest before continuing with its current trend of higher prices. The upper Bollinger band is currently noted at $15.710 per cwt (about $346 per ton), a fact that also likely limited potential gains today. The grain complex as a whole came under firm pressure today led by losses in wheat and corn; soybeans closed about 1.5% lower at $14.6225 per bushel; wheat finished about 2.3% lower at $6.6925 per bushel, and corn finished the day about 2.3% lower at $4.9675 per bushel. U.S. stocks wavered in a narrow range in volatile trading Wednesday, after the S&P 500 earlier hit a new high, as investors digested a batch of economic reports. The Dow and S&P 500 are trying for their first 4-day win streak in nearly two months. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose. The blue-chip index is nearly 25 points away from hitting a fresh record. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq also climbed. Most key S&P sectors were in positive territory, led by industrials and telecoms. Gold is trading about 0.8% higher, crude oil is seen trading about 0.4% lower, and the U.S. dollar is seen trading about 0.2% higher at about 1:00pm Chicago time. Tuesday, there were 1,523 contracts traded, down from 1,991 contracts traded on Monday. Open interest the number of contracts outstanding on Tuesday increased by 125 contracts to 8,372.

Nigeria Port Authorities Blame High Rice Import Tariff Policy for Revenue Losses
Apr 02, 2014

The Seaport Terminal Operators Association of Nigeria (STOAN) chief says that the revenue of the Nigeria Customs Service (NIS), terminal operators, dock workers and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) have declined due to the new increased rice import tariff policy of the government. The STOAN chief told local sources that the 110% tariff on rice imports has caused a revenue loss of around N300 billion (around $1.8 billion) during 2013 and around N80 billion (around $485 million) since the beginning of this year to the government. She says that around 150 shiploads of rice consisting of about 600,000 tons of rice have been diverted to the ports of neighboring countries such Benin, Cameroon, Ghana and Togo during the first three months of 2014 due to the government's high import tariff policy. Recently, Benin reduced its rice import tariff from 35% to 7%, while Cameroon introduced a 0% duty policy on rice, down from 10%. Reports say that several rice importers in Nigeria ship their rice to neighboring countries to evade high tariffs and later bring the rice via porous borders. The STOAN chief says that high rice import tariffs have done more harm than good to the Nigerian economy and has urged the government to reverse the policy at the earliest. Nigerias Finance Minister also supports the

need to reverse the policy and experts say that high tariffs encourage traders to smuggle rice into the country. They say that unless the government improves power supply and other related infrastructure, domestic rice production would remain expensive and would increase the scope for smuggling.Nigeria currently imports nearly 3 million tons of milled rice annually since the locally produced rice of about 2.7 million tons is insufficient to fulfill the country's consumption needs of about 6 million tons, according to the USDA.

Laos Keen to Export Rice to Brunei

Apr 02, 2014

Laos says that it is ready to export rice to Brunei and has invited officials from Bruneis Finance Ministry to conduct a feasibility study in Laos, according to local sources. The outgoing Laos ambassador in Brunei says that the two nations have a strong relationship and have proposed for a barter trade under which Laos could trade goods such as rice and furniture in exchange for oil and gas from Brunei.Laos produces about 1.5 million tons of rice, most of which is consumed locally. However, Laos aims to increase rice production by around one million tons and become an exporter of rice by 2015 when the FTA is likely to be implemented in Southeast Asia. Brunei is also trying to improve domestic production (now at around 1,000 tons of rice) and diversify its rice suppliers. Last month, Brunei invited foreign firms to produce rice in the country to help increase employment. In return, Brunei promised foreign companies that the government will buy rice from them at B$1,600 ($1,260) per ton. At present, Brunei imports around 50,000 tons of rice annually, with Thailand accounting for around 95% Bruneis rice imports. Brunei has said in the past that it wants to reduce dependency on a single supplier and plans to buy rice from Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.

Bangladesh Blames India for Water Shortage for Boro Rice Crop
Apr 02, 2014

Bangladeshs Boro rice (January - April) production may reduce by around 250,000 to 300,000 tons due to an acute water crisis in northern Bangladesh caused by water extraction from the Teesta river upstream by the Indian government, according to local sources. The Teesta water supply project in northern Bangladesh covers nearly 200,000 hectares of rice farming land in six districts and yields in the region are usually higher than that of other areas in northern Bangladesh. An official from the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) says that any reduction in this regions output affects the total rice production in the country. Bangladesh has three major rice crops. While Aman (March - June) and Aus (May - October) crops are rain-fed, the Boro crop depends largely on irrigation. MOA officials say that farmers are facing water shortage this year because the water flow in the

Teesta Barrage has reduced to 350 cusecs against a need of 3,500 cusecs due to random water extraction from the Teesta upstream by the Indian government. An MOA official says that the volume of water in Teesta drops steeply in December - March as India holds almost all the water during the period. Water flow in the Teesta Barrage used to be at least 4,000 cusecs in February - March until Indian government built Gazoldoba Barrage in the 1980s and diverted Teesta water for irrigation covering about 920,000 hectares of land in its eastern state West Bengal, he adds.Rice production from Aman and Aus crops stood at 15.3 million tons in 2013-14, according to the MOA officials. The Bangladesh government is targeting around 18.9 million tons of rice from the Boro crop, which contributes about 57% of the country's total rice production of about 34-35 million tons.

U.S. Researchers Identify Genes Responsible for Multiple Stresses Tolerance in Rice
Apr 02, 2014

Researchers from Michigan Technological University (MTU) in the U.S. have discovered a set of genes that could be useful in developing tough and disease-resistant rice varieties also known as super rice.Researchers have identified more than 1,377 genes in rice that could play a vital role in managing both biotic (caused by infectious organisms like bacteria) and abiotic (caused by environmental agents, like nutrient deficiency, flood and salinity) stresses. Researchers say that overall 3,800 genes could be involved in managing either of biotic or abiotic stresses. The 1,377 genes identified by the researchers are involved in rices stress response played a role in both types stress. These are the genes we think are involved in the cross talk between biotic and abiotic stresses, says one of the researchers. The researchers say that about 70% of the newly identified genes turn on under both kinds of stress. They tested the genes' response to five abiotic stresses - drought, heavy metal contamination, salt, cold and nutrient deprivation; and five biotic stresses - bacteria, fungus, insect predation, weed competition and nematodes. The researchers found that about 196 genes showed a wide range of expressions to multiple stresses. Researchers say that they would select top genes, which could discriminate abiotic and biotic stresses, for developing rice varieties with broad stress-range tolerance in future.

In Italy, rice fields are known also as "checkered sea, a perspective best appreciated from a birds eye view, for instance looking out from the window of a plane. Long distance runners are set to run among the rice fields when they are flooded in the triumphant May weather. The rice marathon, maratona del riso, see www.maratonadelriso.it) will take place on May 1, among the deep heart of Italian rice growing area, in the Vercelli province (Piedmont). The runners will start from Santhi, where every year there is also a rice festival with about 10,000 participants for every edition; then they will go on through Bianz, Crova, Salasco and San Germano Vercellese. For at least a century, all the land around these small towns becomes a big rice field every spring. The whole marathon distance is the classical 42.5 kilometers (about 26 miles), but you can choose also other, shorter race such as 20 or 10 kilometers (about 12 or 6 miles), or you can also decide to take it easy, and select the family run. Vietnam Mekong Delta Rice Production Hurt by Drought, Salinity

Apr 01, 2014

Rice production in thousands of hectares in Vietnams Mekong Delta region is adversely affected by drought and saltwater intrusion, according to local sources. The Mekong Delta accounts for around 50% of Vietnams total rice production of around 28 million tons, and for around 90% of exports of around 7 million tons. However, farmers in the region are likely to lose a significant part of their rice crop this year due to shortage of water and increasing salinity. The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development had advised farmers to avoid planting this year, but most farmers carried on with planting. Officials say that average rice yields could drop around 30-40% due to salinity alone. Salinity has increased this year due to saltwater intrusion from the seas into the rivers.

Oryza Afternoon Recap Chicago Rough Rice Futures Advance to Fresh Highs on Yesterdays Supportive Rice Stocks Report
Apr 01, 2014

Chicago rough rice futures for May delivery settled 9 cents per cwt (about $2 per ton) higher at $15.690 per cwt (about $346 per ton). Rough rice futures continue to react to what was seen as a supportive rice stocks report released yesterday which has confirmed a tightening supply situation ahead of a larger expected new crop. Todays action is seen as further confirmation of the recent bullish reversal following a dip below $15.300 per cwt (about $337 per ton) momentarily last week. Prices are now firmly in technically bullish territory and appear poised to test longer term resistance at $15.800 per cwt (about $348 per ton), a level that has acted as the upper boundary to a sideways trading range which has held throughout this calendar year. Furthermore; additional credence is given to the current run up in prices as it has taken place on increased trade volume and improving open interest, leading some traders to expect that we could see fresh highs shortly. Additional support today was likely attributed to overall bullishness in the grain complex as the other grains finished the day mostly higher with only wheat closing in the red; soybeans closed about 1.4% higher at $14.8450 per bushel; wheat finished about 1.7% lower at $6.8525 per bushel, and corn finished the day about 1.1% higher at $5.0750 per bushel.U.S. stocks held modest gains across the board Tuesday after the S&P 500 briefly shot to a fresh intraday record, as investors digested the latest batch of economic reports.
