Hello from the People in Pre-Primary, Room 43

This term has just flown by. We have enjoyed a warm learning environment and the children have developed friendships and have been quick to settle into their routines. We are learning key word signing as a second language in our class. It is a non-verbal form of communicating and is also a great tool to assist with behaviour and classroom management. We are using the Jolly Phonics sound program. In Jolly Phonics the 42 main sounds of English are taught, not just the alphabet sounds. For each sound there is an action which helps the children remember the sound the letters make. The sounds are not introduced in alphabetical order. Our first six sounds were, s a t p i n and while learning these sounds we each created a growing sound picture. We glued sand on the page for s, we created ants on the page with finger painting for a. We painted a tree trunk and went on an environmental walk to collect leaves to glue on our tree. While walking we learnt the importance of only taking things that had falling on the ground rather than damaging our plants and gardens. For p we used paint, we drew insects for i and made nests and glued them on for n. We have now started our next six sound pictures which we are looking forward to developing. It has been great to see such a healthy variety of fruit and veg coming in to be shared at fruit time. We advocate healthy eating and discourage items such as lollies, chocolates and roll-ups in lunch boxes. We enjoy learning and developing through play and look forward to another great term.
