Lesson Objective: Compare and contrast the form of different types of simple machines Compare and contrast the function of different types of simple machines Discover how simple machines can apply pushes or pulls (forces) to make things move Use simple machines to solve real world problems Standards: NYS Standard 4 Key Idea 5: Energy and matter interact through forces that result in changes in motion CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.4.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 4 topics and texts, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly Procedure: Instructional Strategies/ Learning Tasks 1. Review types of simple machines. We have learned about 6 different types of simple machines. Lets take a moment to review what they are. Write types of simple machines on the Smart board. 2. Introduce virtual house tour. Show virtual house on Smart board. To learn more about the simple machines around us, you will explore this virtual house. You will be assigned a specific area of the house to explore. Your goal is to locate ten objects that are examples of simple machines. 3. Distribute student handout. 4. Review handout. Explain that students will create a list of the examples of simple machines that they find as they explore the house. Model how to complete the table (object in house/ type of simple machine) using an example. 5. Assign each student an area of the virtual house. Prompt students to write the name of the area on the top of their handout. Explain that students can visit another area of the house after they have located all ten examples of simple machines in the area they have been assigned. 6. Students complete virtual house tour. This activity can be completed individually or in groups of 2 or 3.
Accommodations Review types of simple machines, write them on Smart board Review student objective
Give students a moment to record the area of the house that they will explore
7. Engage students in class discussion. What examples of simple machines did you find as you explored the virtual house? Write examples of simple machines on the Smart board. Organize examples by type of simple machine. (A list of the examples of simple machines located in the virtual house is provided below). 8. Engage students in movement activity. Select one of the six types of simple machines such as a lever. Act out what it looks like to use different levers around the house (gate, broom, oven door, toilet lid, etc.) What does it look like to use a ____? 9. Act out what it looks like to use other types of simple machines (pulley, wheel and axle, etc.) 10. Distribute student assessment
