Ossifying fibroma is a rare benign neoplasm observed in both humans and animals involving mostly mandible leading to malocclusions (Whitten et al., 2006). This report places on record a rare case of ossifying fibroma on the fore head region of a bullock.

Case History and Observations

An Ongole bullock aged seven years was presented to the clinic with history of growth on the fore head nearer to the inner canthus of left eye. It had been growing in size since eight months. Clinical examination revealed a cricket ball sized growth with vascularity on the fore head region (Fig.). It was decided to treat by cryosurgery.

was restrained in a trevis. The eye was protected with gauze pads and liquid nitrogen was applied over the growth using swab technique two cycles of three min each on 1st, 4th and 11th day. The tissues undergoing cryonecrosis were curetted out for debulking before cryo application on 4th and 11th day. No further application of liquid nitrogen was required as the growth which regressed completely by 25th day. Histopathologically, the tumor was ossifying fibroma composed of fibroblastic cells separated by abundant collagen. The tumor cells were interwoven with osteoblasts surrounding islands of mineralized bony matrix containing few widely spaced often empty lacunae. Ossifying fibromas are large, solitary expansile lesions that are rare in all species but reported most frequently in horses and have apparent predilection for the rostral mandible (Cillers e al., 2008). Miller et al., (2008) treated a case of ossifying fibroma in a dog by hemimandibulectomy. Orsini et al., (2004) observed a recurrence after excision of ossifying fibroma in a horse and opined that the recurrence was due to incomplete excision. The bullock was found healthy even six months after cryosurgery without recurrence.

Treatment and Discussion

The animal was premedicated with triflupromazine hydrochloride @ 0.1 mg/kg bw. The animal
