Ballet NJ prepares for spring musical
By L. HABER
The Sun
With spring dawning on a
thawing Voorhees, Ballet NJ has
announced its spring production
will be Swan Lake.
Unlike the comfort of warm
air that floats into the area this
year, there is nothing standard
about this coming Swan Lake
performance. For the first time, a
real-life mother and son duo from
Voorhees will star as the Prince
and Princes mother.
Though he is now a soloist
dancer for the Washington Ballet,
the soon-to-be Prince of Swan
Lake, Corey Landolt, and his
mother, Dr. Sharon Buttress, were
Voorhees residents for more than
16 years.
Its definitely funny that shes
my mom, and shes playing my
mom in the ballet, Landolt said.
The two have worked together
in the past, many years ago.
We have not worked together
since I was in the Nutcracker
when I was a little kid, Landolt
said.
Landolt mentioned not being
able to travel back to the area to
perform as a professional, or with
his mother in any way, due to
scheduling conflicts. This
springs Ballet NJ performance
will be different.
In the past, Corey has never
been free to perform with us. This
year, for the first time, the Wash-
ington Ballet is not dancing or re-
hearsing concurrent with our
production, so I thought it would
be a unique opportunity to have
him come back and dance with
us, director David Gallagher
said.
Landolt is a graduate of the
Ballet NJ Academy. Though other
mothers and daughters have per-
formed in past shows together,
this will be the first time a mother
and son will be in a performance
together at such an advanced skill
level.
I thought it would be a fun
thing to have them perform to-
gether I do not know of anoth-
er production where this has hap-
pened, Gallagher said.
Buttress is still a resident of
South Jersey, the active Ballet NJ
board chairperson and the head
of CamCare in Camden. With
more than 20 years of experience
in adult roles for Buttress, and
more than 20 year of dancing ex-
perience for the 27-year-old Lan-
dolt, Swan Lake is set to be a
world-class production, right at
home.
Dancers from Ballet X, the
Pennsylvania Ballet and other
major establishments will also
guest star with the Swan Lake
cast.
All showings will take place at
the Voorhees Middle School.
When asked about why the the-
ater would be used for such in-
volved performances, Gallagher
shared many reasons.
That theater is the only one lo-
cally that has the technical ele-

Instructor David Gallagher leads a practice for Ballet NJ students on March 26. The students will debut
the spring musical Swan Lake at the Voorhees Middle School Theater on April 26. The musical will not
only feature students, but also professional dancers, such as Voorhees native Corey Landolt, who is a
company member with the Washington Ballet.

Spending (formerly Comparative Spending Guidej and can be found on the Department of Education website: http://www.state.nj.us/education under Finance, when avail-
able. This publication is available in the board office and public libraries. The same calculations were performed using the 2013-14 revised appropriations and the 2014-15
budgeted appropriations presented in this advertised budget. Total Budgetary Comparative Per Pupil Cost is defined as current expense exclusive of tuition expenditures,
transportation, residential costs, and judgments against the school district. For all years it also includes the restricted entitlement aids. With the exception of Total Equipment

ments to handle a complex pro-
duction such as Swan Lake,
Gallagher said. This venue has
what is called a fly gallery. The
fly gallery is a space above the
stage that allows you to bring
down to the stage complex sets
and drops quickly, so that the dra-
matic flow of a ballet is not inter-
rupted.
Besides having technically un-
matched elements when com-
pared to other area theaters, Gal-
lagher also mentioned that Ballet
NJ has used it as the preferred
theater for more than 25 years,
even though the organizations
practice facilities are in West
Berlin.
Also, the man that runs the
theater, Scott Middleton, is like a
genius and he and I work to-
gether to make our performances
the best you can see anywhere at
our level, Gallagher said.
A majority of the professional
dancers, such as Landolt, will
only dance with Buttress and the
rest of the company a handful of
times before the productions.
Still, Ballet NJ dancers have al-
ready begun a strict practice rou-
tine.
The dancers rehearse over a
12-week period. The dancers in
the Swan Corps de Ballet re-
hearse about four times a week.
Some of the youngest dancers re-
hearse once a week. The profes-
sionals dancing the lead roles
come out to our facility about
four times over the course of the
production, and they then re-
hearse on their own, Gallagher
said.
Swan Lake is part of a rotat-
ing series of spring productions
for Ballet NJ, but that makes it all
the more fun to liven and revive
every new time it is performed.
To dazzle audiences this year,
Gallagher and other crewmem-
bers have used donations to com-
prise some of the most intricate
Swan Lake
part of rotating
productions

Couple gets married while at
Voorhees care and rehab center
On Thursday, March 27, a cou-
ple from the Lanning Square area
of Camden tied the knot at The
Voorhees Care and Rehabilitation
Center.
Bride Dorothy Stoudt and
groom Firman Streater have en-
countered some serious health
challenges, and were in an in-pa-
tient sub-acute rehabilitation set-
ting when the wedding took place.
Care center social services di-
rector Jesse Gonzalez first went
into action when asked by Stoudt
to plan the wedding, requesting
other staffers help with the
arrangements. The cake was
made by dining services staff at
the facility. Marketing and activi-
ties directors planned dcor, pro-
grams, music and flowers with
the couples rapid input.
The couple met more than 20
years ago through mutual friends
and are from Mickle Towers in

Two weeks ago, I urged you to get out-
doors and enjoy the Voorhees parks.
This week, I encourage you to hop on
your bicycle and ride the Voorhees bike
path system.
There are 10.5 miles of existing bike
paths in our township. The Voorhees
Township Bicycle and Pedestrian Pathway
Committee works hard to promote our bike
paths and bike safety for the benefit of our
community.
Existing bike paths in Voorhees include
Centennial Boulevard, from Old Egg Har-
bor Road to Evesham Road, Kresson Road
from Cooper Road to Route 73, Victor
Boulevard from Cooper Road to Haddon-
field-Berlin Road, Regency Drive to Dutch-
town Road, Dutchtown Road through Lions
Lake Park, Lucas Lane from Britton Place
to White Horse
Road, Laurel Oak
Road to Centennial
Boulevard in front
of Eastern Region-
al High School,
Cooper Road from
Centennial Boule-
vard to the Berlin
township border,
and Somerdale
Road from Burnt
Mill Road to Eve-
sham Road.
Virtua has in-
stalled bike paths
on its new medical
campus on Route
73, which connect
to Dutchtown Road and Lions Lake Park.
A full map of the township bike paths is
available at Town Hall. A map is also avail-
able on our website, at
www.voorheesnj.com. The map can be
found under the directions and maps
link.
The committee continues to apply for
grants to fund the improvements and ex-
pansion of our bike paths throughout the
township and region.
We were recently awarded a TCDI grant
that funded the addition of new bike lanes
on Laurel Oak Road, adjacent to Eastern
High School. This work will be completed
this summer. We will continue to work

F
or the next two weeks, police
forces throughout the state will
be looking, long and hard, for
drivers who are distracted. Its part of
the Division of Highway Traffic Safe-
tys Distracted Driving 2014 Statewide
Crackdown.
Sixty police departments received
$5,000 each to pay for increased patrols
and checkpoints for the crackdown,
which began April 1 and runs through
April 21. The campaign coincides with
the national Distracted Driving
Awareness Month.
Its a good start, but the state should
really go further to improve public
safety on our roadways.
In 2012, an estimated 421,000 people
were injured in crashes involving a
distracted driver, which represents a 9
percent increase over the year before,
according to state data. Possibly the
most public case was that of 8-month-
old Angelie Paredes, who was killed
last summer when a distracted bus
driver lost control of the vehicle in
West New York and struck a light pole
that fell onto the babys stroller.
Distracted driving focuses on tex-
ting or talking on the phone while
driving, but it also can include using a
mobile phone for directions, using
MP3 players, eating or putting on
makeup.
The fine for a first offense of dis-
tracted driving in New Jersey is $200,
but its a non-point-carrying offense.
We wonder if $200 and no points is
enough of a deterrent to drivers. Or
maybe campaigns such as this one will
help, in that more drivers will be
pulled over for the offense.
Either way, we believe the state, and
maybe even the federal government,
should step in to increase the penalties
for distracted driving, and make driv-
ing in todays mobile society easier to
navigate.
Can the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration require all new
vehicles to be equipped with Bluetooth
technology, like it is requiring all new
vehicles to have backup cameras by
2018?
While it certainly wouldnt solve the
problem, as the driver would have to
have a Bluetooth-compatible device for
it to work, its something that is be-
coming more standard by the day.
It wouldnt be the solve-all to the
problem of distracted driving, but it
would certainly be an effective start.
UDrive. UText. UPay.
State should go further to crack down on distracted driving, permanently
Your thoughts
What do you think about the states push
to reduce distracted drivers? Should the
crackdown be in effect full-time? Should
the state and federal governments do
more to help drivers avoid being
distracted? Share your thoughts with us.

Receiving the
proper immuniza-
tions can protect
your infant from
many preventable
diseases. This April,
the Freeholder
Board is sponsoring
a month-long cam-
paign to raise aware-
ness of the
importance of immunizations and
how they can contribute to the health
of our children.
As a mother and educator, I under-
stand that children need immuniza-
tions to survive and thrive. This is a
crucial part of our job as parents and
caregivers. We must protect our chil-
dren from any number of communi-
cable diseases they can encounter in
school and out in the public. Provid-
ing proof of proper immunizations is
also required to register a child for
school.
The Freeholder Boards Depart-
ment of Health and Human Services
provides immunizations to Camden
County residents up to the age of 18
on Mondays and Wednesdays from
9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on the lower level
of 600 Market Street in Camden. No
walk-ins are accepted, but you can
call (856) 225-5128 to make an appoint-
ment. The immunizations are offered
at no cost to residents who dont cur-
rently have health insurance and
proof of County residency is re-
quired.
There are five important reasons
to vaccinate your child:
Immunizations can save your
childs life - Advances in medical sci-
ence allow your child to be protected
against more diseases than ever be-
fore. Some diseases that once injured
or killed thousands of children have
been eliminated completely and oth-
ers are close to extinction.
Vaccination is safe and effective -
Vaccines are only given to children
after a long and care-
ful review by scien-
tists, doctors, and
healthcare profession-
als. Vaccines will in-
volve some discomfort
and may cause pain,
redness, or tenderness
at the site of injection,
but this is minimal
compared to the pain,
discomfort and trauma of the dis-
eases they prevent.
Immunization protects loved ones
- Some individuals cant receive vac-
cinations due to age, allergies, weak-
ened immune systems or other
conditions. To help keep them safe, it
is important that everyone else gets
immunized. This not only protects
your family, but also helps prevent the
spread of disease to your friends and
loved ones.
Immunizations save time and
money - A child with a vaccine-pre-
ventable disease can be denied atten-
dance at schools or daycare facilities.
Some of these diseases can result in
prolonged disabilities and can take a
financial toll on a family due to lost
time at work, medical bills or long-
term care.
Immunization protects future gen-
erations. Vaccines have reduced, and
in some cases eliminated many dis-
eases that killed or disabled people
just a few generations ago. As we con-
tinue vaccinating, the diseases of
today will no longer be around to
harm children in the future.

The Sun
The title may be new but the
face is a familiar one as Laura
Stagliano enters her first season
as the head coach for the Eastern
High School Vikings softball
team.
The former soccer and softball
standout has been an assistant
softball coach at her alma mater
for two seasons, and now takes
the reins from Jamie McGroarty
to become the head coach.
Honestly, I cant even put in to
words how grateful I am to (ath-
letic director) Phil Smart, Jamie
McGroarty and the administra-
tors at Eastern for this opportuni-
ty, Stagliano said. Its always
been a dream to come back and
teach and coach here. Ive been
blessed to do both with soccer and
softball. I had such a positive ex-
perience when I went here as an
athlete. To have the chance to
come back here and coach is awe-
some.
Stagliano credited her prede-
cessor for establishing a culture
at Eastern that was attractive to
be a part of.
Coach McGroarty did a really
great job of setting the tone for
the team. He had a more laid back
approach that I totally agree with.
I really think that is how you get
the best out of high school girls,
Stagliano said.
Its tough to argue with their
approach, as a season ago the
Vikings went 22-8 and advanced
to the South Jersey Group IV
semifinals. McGroarty, who was
105-42 in six seasons as the head
softball coach at Eastern, stepped
down from his post following last
season and was very supportive
of Stagliano taking over the pro-
gram.
Stagliano played soccer on
teams coached by McGroarty,
who remains the head girls soc-
cer coach at Eastern. She was a
member of two state champi-
onship soccer teams in high
school. She also played softball for
all four years and was a two-time
All-State performer.
Ive had the unique opportuni-
ty to see him from a player aspect
and a coach aspect now,
Stagliano said. I dont think any-
one knows the time he puts into
coaching. I had such a positive ex-
perience playing for him in soc-
cer. Just working for him, hes
given me so much respect. Hes
been so professional. I cant say
enough about him. Hes just been
a great mentor for me. To come
back to Eastern, I couldnt have
planned it out any better. Its been
great so far.
Following a successful career
at Eastern, Stagliano played soft-
ball for the University of Ver-
mont for two seasons, but the soft-
ball program was cut, so she
transferred to Drexel, where she
completed her athletic and aca-
demic careers. Stagliano graduat-
ed from Drexel in December 2011
and taught at Camden County
Tech. In the summer of 2012, she
was hired as a mathematics
teacher at Eastern.
Stagliano inherits a team that
is rich in young talent but short
on senior leadership, as the start-
ing lineup is made up entirely of
underclassmen.
With a young team, you want
to stay away from focusing only
on wins and losses. Weve been
doing a lot of work with funda-
mentals and focusing on trying to
get better every day, Stagliano
said. Ive been telling the girls to
focus on at bats and to hit the ball
up the middle, put the ball in play.
Thats where it starts.

sets and costumes to date.
The costumes are designed by
A. Christina Giannini, an inter-
nationally known costume de-
signer from Manhattan, Gal-
lagher said.
Gallagher also mentioned that
two local artists, Rosemary Gor-
man and Jurga Kwiatkowski,
helped with costume design ele-
ments.
The costumes are truly in-
credible, and you will not believe
how beautiful they are when the
curtain goes up, Gallagher said.
The set designer was Michael
Stockton, a seasoned professional
who works out of Quinlan's Sce-
nic Design Studios in Marcus
Hook, Pa.
In addition to the main design-
ers, 150 people will be involved in
the productions over the course of
the four performances. Gallagher
mentioned that the caliber of pro-
duction elements for this springs
Swan Lake excited the young
Ballet NJ dancers more than ever.
The dancers are so excited
about this production. The music,
the costumes and the choreogra-
phy are so much fun for all of the
dancers they just love it. We all
cannot wait for the performances
to come, although the process of
preparing for the performance is
also really exciting, Gallagher
said.
With the special arrival of Lan-
dolt and other professionals, and
the detailed sets and costumes,
Ballet NJ students are working
hard on maintaining focus each
day leading up to the April 26
debut.
There are no unique ways to
prepare for the production, Gal-
lagher said. Just hard, consis-
tent and intense training.

Carz N Toyz run April 13
By L. HABER
The Sun
Most people might not assume
that muscle cars and childrens
toys are two things that go togeth-
er. However, the local charity Carz
N Toyz proves that cool, fast cars,
and collecting toys for children in
local hospitals can actually go
hand in hand.
This year, the group will hold
its annual Carz N Toyz Run for
the Kids. The event is set for Sun-
day, April 13, with Virtua
Voorhees being the main attrac-
tion.
Started in 2011, charity mem-
ber and event chairman Bob
Paglione described how a charity
group combining neat cars, chari-
ty and toy donation to local hospi-
tals was created as an unlikely
combination, almost on a whim.
A bunch of car guys went for a
ride and thought, maybe we ought
to do something for kids in the
hospital then one of the indi-
viduals who is pretty involved in
the group is a runner, and came
up with the idea for a run we
then met with Virtua and talked
to them about it, Paglione said.
The original idea for the chari-
ty was to provide toys for children
in local hospitals during the win-
ter holiday season. Today, the
charitys mission has grown into
a much greater cause.
Were trying to grow the or-
ganization, Paglione said. Most
people still think its only for toys
around Christmas time. The truth
of the matter is, it happens all
year long.
Paglione then described the
comfort small gifts to children
being treated at the hospital can
have in situations throughout the
year.
We may give them a toy at any
time, and it distracts them from
the doctors for kids going
through treatment all year long,
even giving a little something to
them in front of their parent, or to
a parent, is comforting, Paglione
said.
The Run for the Kids is a 5K for
runners, but also includes a one-
mile walking component for those
wanting to raise awareness, but
participate at a slower pace. The
race will start at Virtua Hospital,
at 100 Bowman Drive.
Paglione mentioned last year,
the group expected to collect
about 250 toys, but actually col-
lected about 800.
The local car community real-
ly came together, Paglione said.
The group has now collected
well more than 1,000 toys and 1,000
books for kids, but has no reason
to let go of hope for even bigger
numbers in the future.
Toyz collected usually range
in great variety, though Virtua
does give charity leaders a basic
list of what is most needed each
year before the race and other
events. The donation process is
spreading to other hospitals as a
result.
Now, the toys we donate to Vir-
tua go to about 10 different loca-
tions, too, Paglione said.
Carz N Toyz may work with
Lourdes Hospital in the future, as
well as other candidates with
large pediatric departments.
Paglione mentioned that
money donated to the organiza-
tion last year helped bring vibrant
and mood-lighting artwork to Vir-
tua Voorhees and Mount Holly pe-
diatric units.
Having participated in the Carz
N Toyz event last year, team
member Cheryl Squadrito was
moved by how local children are
being helped in a way that brings
a community together.
"Run for the Kids will make a
difference in the lives and care for
children here in South Jersey. It's
truly a local event because the
participants are local and are
helping local kids in Virtua Hospi-
tal, Squadrito said. It's great to
help the little ones who are literal-
ly in our backyard.
The day of the event, registra-
tion for racers will open at 8:30
a.m. Races are set to begin at 10
a.m. Entry fees are $25 for the 5K
in advance and $30 on race day.
Tickets for the walking portion
are $15 in advance and $20 on race
day.
Children under 14 wanting to
participate in the walk or run can
do so for free. Toy donations di-
rectly brought to the event are
also welcome.
In accordance with keeping the
Voorhees and larger Camden
County community involved in
the charity, Paglione and other
members are in the process of set-
ting up future events.
We are planning a future event
in Camden in July, Paglione said.
Though Paglione mentioned
that details for the event are not
yet finalized, the Rendezvous
Cruise and Car Show is set for
Saturday, July 19 at Campbells
Field.

For libraries across the county,
April 13 to 19 will commemorate
National Library Week.
For the Camden County M.
Allen Vogelson Regional Branch
in town, the schedule for Nation-
al Library Week is as full as pos-
sible, with activities for children,
teens and adults.
On Monday, April1 14, and
Wednesday, April 16, the library
will be hosting special classes for
residents learning to speak Eng-
lish.
Called Conversation Class,
these group discussions, both
scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon,
will allow people speaking Eng-
lish as their second language, or
people simply wanting to im-
prove their speech, to learn from
instructors and each other. Lively
impromptu topics will be
brought up in conversation, and
all will have the chance to prac-
tice speaking and sharing experi-
ences with other participants.
On Tuesday, April 15, the li-
brary will host the ever-popular
Real Life Reads Book Club. This
activity is also for adults.
From 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the
first floor caf, there will be a
book chat about Malcolm Glad-
wells The Tipping Point: how
little things can make a big differ-
ence. Adults who have read the
book, or are curious about the
book topic or author, are encour-
aged to attend.
Other events are also sched-
uled for Wednesday, April 16.
Starting at 10:30 a.m., Jump
Start Story Time will allow ba-
bies and parents or caregivers
the opportunity to start their
morning with fun, including a
lively story time, songs and a
short play. Babies 12 to 18 months
are best suited for this activity.
At 4:30 p.m., the library will
host Crochet and Knit Club. Chil-
dren, teens and adults with all
skill levels are welcome to head
to the library to learn crocheting
and knitting techniques. Experi-
enced knitters currently working
on a project and wanting to so-
cialize with others in the commu-
nity are encouraged to attend.
National Library Week will
continue through Thursday,
April 17, as crafting activities at
the library are on the agenda for
that day.
At 4:30 p.m., children in second
grade and younger can come to
the library to grab an after school
snack, and freely craft with sup-
plies provided by the library.
From 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.,
children of all ages are welcome
to craft at the library during
what is being dubbed, Art Hour.
The library will cap off the
week with a family-friendly Fri-
day movie night on April 18, as
well as an open mic event.
The Friday Night Flick will be
a surprise, but families are wel-
come to dress comfortably and
get cozy in the librarys meeting
room A. Popcorn and other good-
ies will be served during the
movie.
From 7 to 8:30 p.m. in study
room E, library staff hosting the
open mic welcomes both poetry
readers and musicians to attend.
Voorhees residents of all ages are
invited to stop by, socialize and
participate. No registration is re-
quired for the open mic night,
though other programs require
prior registration.
To register or learn more
about programs during National
Library Week and throughout
the year, please call the library at
772-6105.
