Kaslo is buzzing with the excitement of our May
Days celebration! Every year at this time, our sleepy
little town awakens and becomes a vibrant, engaging
centre of activity. May Days brings together neigh-
bours and friends to mark the end of a long, cold win-
ter. This will be the 121st consecutive year Kaslo has
celebrated the dawn of spring.
Theres so much to do and take in! Car buff or not,
you'll surely agree that the Show and Shine on Front
Street is an amazing spectacle of unique and rare cars.
Youll want to wander over to Vimy Park which is full
of activities all weekend long! Theres a market offer-
ing great crafts, jewelry, artwork and yummy food. En-
joy some home cooking while you listen to all sorts
of live music or take in a slo-pitch game.
This year features not one, but two days of our popu-
lar Logger Sports event, Saturday and Sunday. Can
you imagine yourself taking a helicopter ride? Roller
Derby, the horse show and the skateboarding competi-
tion offer edge of your seat thrills!
On Monday, after the parade that goes around twice,
the weekend festivities culminate in the childrens
May Pole dance.
Dont forget to pull out your complimentary
schedule, supported by the sponsoring businesses.

CHICAGO the Musical!
Tickets are on sale now for this great production. Te
team that brought you last years scintillating spectacle,
Cabaret, is back this time with a little more jazz, a little
more sass, and a few more murders. Black Productions is
proud to present the Tony award-winning musical, Chi-
cago, running June 12-15 at 8 pm and June 14 and 15 at 2
pm, at the Capitol Teatre in Nelson.
Set against the backdrop of prohibition-era Chicago
and featuring some of the best music Broadway has to
ofer, Chicago is a story of ambition, celebrity, and the
seductive power of the spotlight. Tis tale of two rival
vaudevillian murderesses and their slick-talking media
savvy lawyer will be directed by Lisel Forst
(Into the Woods, Youre a Good Man Charlie
Brown), with musical direction by Allison
Girvan (Corazon, Les Miserables) and chor-
eography by Mackenzie Hope (Cabaret, Jesus
Christ Superstar).
Tickets for Chicago are on sale now, $20 for
students and $25 for adults, and are available at
the Capitol Teatre box of ce by calling 250-352-
6363, or by visiting www.capitoltheatre.bc.ca.
Supporting Te Bereaved
For those who have lost someone through
death, the cycle of loss through detachment,
despair and anger to recovery can be a lone-
ly, frightening and overwhelming experience,
even when family and friends are trying to
support us. A grief support group provides
a safe, supportive environment where the
bereaved can learn that the way they are ex-
periencing their grief is normal and very in-
dividual. Grief is a healthy response to loss
that needs to be acknowledged and expressed
before we can move on. Working through feel-
ings about losses and sharing them with others
who are also grieving decreases our isolation
and loneliness while helping us learn how to
experience and work through our pain.
Nelson & District Hospice Society is of-
fering a free Grief Support Series for anyone
grieving the loss of someone through death.
Te group will run for four weeks starting
Tursday, May 1 until May 22 from 6 8 pm.
Pre-registration is required but attendance is
free. For more information and/or to register,
please call Nelson Hospice at 250-352-2337
or email info@nelsonhospice.org. All calls are
confdential. Donations gratefully accepted.

JVH Playground S.O.S.
Te parent advisory council (PAC) at JV Humphries
School in Kaslo is in need of a few solid people to sit on
a playground committee. We are currently raising funds
to replace the 40+ year old playground equipment on the
north side of the school, but it is slow going without a
committee in place. Joy Lukacs has graciously agreed to
lead the committee. Tere are beautiful play structures
available and this addition to our school grounds would
enhance our childrens school experience, enabling them
to create fond outside time memories while at school.
Tere are many grants available and even more proven
fundraising ideas out there; we just need a few people to
work together to bring our new playground to fruition.
New playgrounds cost $40,000 and up, and to date, PAC
has raised $3,000. We have quite a way to go but with a
committed group of people we can make this happen!
Te people we are looking for must be willing to help
with fundraising events and grant writing as well as re-
searching the best playground(s) for the space available.
Tis committee does not have to be comprised solely of
parents of students in the school. Singles, parents of very
young children and older children, grandparents (men
and women alike) are welcome to sit on the Playground
Committee. Please contact Joy Lukacs at 250-353-8038 or
email: joy.lukacs8@gmail.com for more information.

Would Your Acreage Beneft
From Soil Amendment?
Set in the fctional town of Kootenay Landing, Open Se-
cret explores the troubled relationships and long-held se-
crets that tie the residents of a small town together. Te story
features coroner and retired soldier, Bern Fortin, who was
also the protagonist of Colliers frst novel, Confned Space.
Both books are published by Simon & Schuster Canada.
Collier was a long-time resident of Creston before mov-
ing to Nelson in 2011. She describes the fctional town of
Kootenay Landing as a Kootenay any-town. It is similar
to Creston in many ways, but I adapt the geography and
place names to the needs of the story. I want to create a
sense of place that is both unique and familiar.
READ...for Literacy, RESPOND...to the GREAT DEALS, and
RECYCLE the PENNYWISE...for the good of the planet.
Local Author Launches Second
Bern Fortin Mystery
In 2012, readers were introduced to Bern Fortin in
Deryn Colliers breakout novel, Confned Space, which
was nominated for an Arthur Ellis Award and was the
One Book One Kootenay selection for 2013.
Te second in the series, Open Secret, hits bookstore
shelves next week, and to celebrate Berns return, fans can
attend several events planned in both Nelson and Creston.
Two events are planned for Nelson on Friday, April 11.
Deryn Collier will be signing copies of Open Secret at Ot-
ter Books, from 3 pm to 5 pm. Ten, that evening Oxygen
Arts Centre presents the of cial Open Secret launch at
7:30 at the Centre. A $5 donation to Oxygen Arts Centre
is recommended at this event.
Creston events will take place on Wednesday, April 16:
a signing from 2-4 pm and a launch at 7 pm, both held at
Black Bear Books.

AL BEERRRY
Family and friends of Al Berry feel blessed to
have shared in the journey of this larger-than-
life-man. Al had many passions in his life and
devoted his time to his family, his church com-
munity, school teaching, square dance calling
and wood working. In his early years he was
very active in the Boy Scout movement and
proudly earned his way to being a King Scout.
Als extended family include his wife, Joy; his daughters Catherine,
Tammy, Dawn, Kim (deceased); his sons, Colin, Scott (deceased);
his many grandchildren; great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Al was a well-loved leader in the Carman United Church commu-
nity. In his later years with declining health, he happily took on the
role of Chief Hugger/Greeter at the door each Sunday.
Als square dance calling career began at UBC in 1949 and
became a lifelong source of happiness and satisfaction for him.
He was a consummate performer who loved the attention and
the people! Al had a fulflling teaching career and was proud
to be known to thousands of students in the Chilliwack area as
Captain Purple. In his retirement years be brought his gif of
square dance calling to schools throughout
the province and continued sharing this
passion at hundreds of private functions.
A celebration of life for Al took place on
March 29
th

Employment Opportunities
Karoshi At Te Capitol Teatre
Te Capitol Teatre is excited to present Shay Kueblers
Dance Company with their performance of Karoshi on Wed-
nesday, April 16, at 8 pm. Combining physically explosive
choreography for an outstanding all-male ensemble com-
prised of six dancers, live taiko drumming, stunning video
projections and light manipulation, Karoshi is a thrilling and
visceral theatrical experience, full of maniacal energy and
black humour. If you enjoyed lasts years presentation by
Les Ballet Jazz de Montreal you will love this, says Stephanie
Fischer, the Capitol Teatres executive director.
Te Japanese phenomenon of karoshi death by over-
work depicts the clash between extreme societal pres-
sure to conform to the collective conscience and the group
path; and the repression of personal fulfllment. When
society is rigid, and the focus on one aspect is unwaver-
ing, the neglected portions of self will eventually rise up
with as much force as the amount of time it has been re-
pressed. Karoshi inspired an ambitious and exciting work
by Vancouver dance sensation
Shay Kuebler.
Kueblers dynamic choreog-
raphy blends the lines of martial
arts, dance and theatre yet has
the versatility to work in specifc
techniques where he has choreo-
graphed musical theatre, jazz,
hip hop, tap and contemporary
dance performance works. A re-
cipient of the inaugural Nation-
al Choreographic Competition
Kuebler creates his own work
for international dance festivals
and dance companies across
Canada. Part b-boy, ballet and
contemporary dancer and mar-
tial artist, Kueblers renaissance
style is hard to pigeon hole. ...it
so fully embodied entertainment
and artistry at such high levels...
Vancouver Weekly
Shay Kuebler began his per-
forming career at the age of fve
with Stage Polaris Teatre Acad-
emy in Edmonton, AB. He soon
afer commenced his eight-year
study in Shito-Ryu karate that
would lead to his training in dance.
With knowledge of many artistic
forms, he has performed across
the world, from contemporary and
hiphop in Brazil, to tap dance in
Lebanon. With his unique back-
ground in the arts, Shay has be-
come a very versatile and dynamic
performer, director and choreog-
rapher. One could defne him
as one of the most dynamically
physical dancers on the Vancouver
scene.
Tickets are $30 adult, $24 stu-
dent at capitoltheatre.bc.ca or

Discussion Regarding Use of $60,000
Comments invited
In 2005, the Community Forest granted
$60 000 towards a seniors housing project
in Kaslo. Despite the sincere efort of many
volunteers no such housing project has come
to fruition. Although the Community Forest
Board supports this initiative we have made
the decision to take these monies out of
reserve. We would like to see the money put
to use. Maggie Winters of the Kaslo & Area
Health Care Select Committee will present a
proposal that we use this money to help
recruit physicians to Kaslo. Other suggestions
and comments are welcome.

ELECTION BY ACCLAMATION
Four positions on the board were to be flled at this
general meeting. Four people have been nomi-
nated. They are: Jef Mattes, Steve Fawcett, Ross
Lake, and Cloe Bayeur-Holland. They will join (Jef
and Steve will rejoin) directors Erika Bird, Donna
Cormie, Chris Webster, Stan Baker, and Glen Settle.

HEALTH MATTERS
Kaslo Emergency Department Hours
Change 1st of April
The new hours are Monday to Friday from
9 am 5 pm, but closed on statutory holidays.
Primary Health Centre hours will remain 9 am
to 5 pm Monday to Friday.
WHEN THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT IS
CLOSED: Residents should call 9-1-1 in an
emergency and they will be transported to a
facility with a higher level of care. When the
emergency department is closed, residents will
nd a public phone available in the lobby of
the Victorian Community Health Centre to call
9-1-1. For less urgent matters, area residents
may choose to drive to the emergency
department at Kootenay Lake Hospital in
Nelson or call HealthLink BC at 8-1-1. The toll-
free line provides 24-hour, condential health
information and advice from a registered nurse.
Farewell and Welcome
On April 3
rd
Nicola Candy RN will be moving
to her new nursing position in the Nelson
Emergency Department. Nicola has, in the last
four years, been the site lead at the Victorian
Community Health Centre and has worked hard
to ensure that the facility has worked smoothly.
She has been instrumental in bringing new
staff to the facility. Nicola herself has often
stepped in when RNs were not available and
covered shifts herself. Emergency care is a
special interest of Nicolas and we wish her
well in her new position in Nelson. We hope we
wont need to see her there, but if we do we
know we will be in good hands.
We say farewell to two RNs who will no
longer be working in Kaslo. These are Jessie
Renzie and Carol Strathopolous. We thank
them for their dedication and service to Kaslo
and area and wish them well in their new roles
in Nelson and Creston.
Robert Nellis has accepted the position of site
lead in Nicolas place. Robert has worked as an
RN in Kaslo since 2007 and we look forward
to working with him in his new role. He brings
experience in the health care eld from nursing
positions in the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical
Centre in Lebanon, NH.

Measles
There is an outbreak of measles in the
Fraser Valley of BC at the moment. If you
are traveling to that area or have visited
there recently, take note of the following
information:
What is measles? Measles, also known as
red measles, is a severe illness caused by the
measles virus. Measles can cause encephalitis,
an inammation of the brain, which can lead
to seizures, deafness, or brain damage. One
person in every 3,000 with measles may die
from complications. Complications and death
are most common in infants less than 12
months of age and in adults. Complications of
measles can include:
Ear infections - 1 in 10 cases
Diarrhea - 8 in 100 cases
Pneumonia - 1 in 10 cases
Hospital stay - 1 to 2 in 10 cases
Encephalitis - 1 in every 1,000 cases.
Because of immunization, measles is now
a rare disease in Canada. Most cases occur
in unimmunized people, including visitors to
Canada, who have traveled overseas.
Measles Vaccine.
The measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR)
vaccine provides protection against measles
and is provided free as part of your childs
routine immunizations. The vaccine is also
provided free to others who need protection
against measles. For more information, see
HealthLink BC File #14a Measles, Mumps,
Rubella (MMR) Vaccine.
How is measles spread?
Measles is very contagious and spreads
easily. When an infected person breathes,
coughs, or sneezes, the virus spreads through
the air. The measles virus can survive in small
droplets in the air for several hours. You can
become infected when you breathe in these
droplets or touch objects contaminated with
the virus. The airborne spread of measles virus
makes the disease very contagious. Sharing
food, drinks or cigarettes, or kissing someone
who has the virus can also put you at risk
What should I do if I think I have
measles? If you have fever and a rash and
think you may have measles, especially if
you have been in contact with someone with
measles or traveled to an area with a measles
outbreak, have yourself examined by a health
care professional. It is best to call ahead so that
you can be seen quickly and without infecting
other people. Measles can spread easily in
places like waiting rooms and emergency
rooms. The doctor or triage nurse can make
sure that you are taken into a closed area
for an examination and attend the clinic at a
time when the waiting room is empty. Bring
your immunization record with you. A physical
examination, blood test, and throat swab or
urine sample will be collected to make the
diagnosis of measles.

Reporting Your Stories
Have you had an emergency that suffered
because the Kaslo ER was closed? Have you
had a medical situation you felt could have
been handled more effectively if services in
Kaslo were better? If so, the group of concerned
advocates called Connected Communities (CC),
which includes Trail, Castlegar, Nelson and
Kaslo, will take your experiences to their semi-
annual meetings with Interior Health. It is the
venue to air such stories so that those Interior
Health managers personally realize the effects
of their decisions. Mary Stickel is presently
our CC rep and she will gladly receive your
stories at mstickel@telus.net or 250-353-2936.
This is a citizen-to-Interior Health channel to
communicate such things. An ofcial route
would be to speak with Kaslo Community
Health Centre manager or the Interior Health
Patient Care Quality Ofce (patient.concerns@
interiorhealth.ca, 250-870-4670).
Screening Mammography
in Kaslo in April
The Screening Mammography van will be at
the Kaslo Primary Health Centre on April 23, 24,
25. It is recommended that women aged 40 to
79 with no signs of a breast problem (such as
lumps, nipple discharge, etc.) have a screening
mammogram at least every two years. To book
an appointment call 1-800-663-9203. Please
have your Care Card number available when
you call.
Volunteer Drivers
Kaslo area is still in need of volunteer drivers.
If you can help, please contact Elizabeth
Brandrick 250-353-2159. Judy Suroke of
Castlegar Community Services organizes the
volunteer driver program for the region. She is
also able to arrange for a ride home if you are
stranded in Nelson or Trail after a hospital stay.

Alex Atamanenko Hosts
Seth Klein Forum
Alex Atamanenko, MP for BC Southern Interior, is
hosting a public forum with Seth Klein, BC Director of
the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA), a
public policy research institute committed to social, eco-
nomic and environmental justice. Te free event will take
place on Sunday, April 27 from 1:30 to 4 pm at the Bril-
liant Cultural Centre.
Seth has been a social activist for over 30 years. He is the
co-chair of the BC Poverty Reduction Coalition and on the
Advisory Committee of the Metro Vancouver Living Wage
for Families campaign. His research deals primarily with
welfare policy, poverty, inequality and economic security.
In a 2013 report prepared by the CCPA, Seth and his
co-author Iglika Ivanova maintain that there is a clear need
to raise more tax revenues in BC, that there is considerable
room to do so and that the options for doing so are many. Te
report presents a menu of possible tax options that would
increase BCs fscal capacity, create budgetary room to meet
our most pressing needs and reduce income inequality.
Joining in the discussion will be local panelists Regina
Day, BC Retired Teachers Association board member;
Dr. Rebecca McDonnell, community liaison and environ-
mental director, Blueberry Creek Community School
Hub; and Jan Morton, Executive Director of Te Skills
Centre, Trail.
We need to have this conversation, said Atamanenko.
Taxes are an investment in our future and corporations
and the wealthy need to pay their fair share. A fair tax
system, both federal and provincial, would ensure strong
public health care and education systems, universal child-
care, top-quality seniors care and adequate funding for
infrastructure, said the NPD MP.
Seth will also be speaking at the Nelson United Church
on Sunday evening at 7 pm, sponsored by the Council of
Canadians.

ency of ce, 250-365-2792, alex.atamanenko.c1@parl.gc.ca

Author Tackles Lyme Disease
In Vital New Book
Nobody likes to think about ticks, or about Lyme Dis-
ease. But you cant sweep this bug under the rug. Author
Vanessa Farnsworth brings Lyme disease and her own
journey with the bizarrely intelligent tick-borne bacter-
ium to light in a special presentation on Monday April
28 at 7 pm at the Kaslo & District Public Library.
Farnsworths book, Rain on a Distant Roof: a Personal Jour-
ney through Lyme Disease in Canada, examines the science
behind this disease as she describes her struggle with its ef-
fects, and her battle with an unprepared medical system.
Te guilty bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferi, has been
likened by scientists to a creature from outer space for its
ability to mimic diferent cells. Symptoms can be debili-
tating, afecting many parts of the body including nerves,
brain, and heart. Its an incredibly complicated illness,
says Farnsworth, who writes about Lyme disease in her
blog on lymediseasebook.com.
One of the many Lyme-related problems that we have
here in Canada is the way in which health authorities
continue to defne Lyme disease in such narrow terms
infection with borrelia bacteria and nothing more and
thats a defnition that isnt helpful to patients stuck in a
medical nightmare.
It also doesnt help that the habitat of ticks that can carry
the disease most commonly western black-legged ticks
in BC is rapidly expanding, and that the number of cases
is expected to rise.
Rain on a Distant Roof ofers thought-provoking in-
sight into the daily struggles and obstacles faced by chron-
ic Lyme disease patients. Vanessa Farnsworths self-de-
scribed tick-shattered life is an all too common but
seldom told story of desperately ill Canadians caught in
a healthcare nightmare, says Susan McInnis, president of
Lyme Disease Association of Alberta.
