After the war, he married Esther A. Kiechle and together they operated a family farm until it was destroyed by fire in 1962. In retirement, James enjoyed nature activities and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He is survived by three daughters, a son, three granddaughters, four grandsons, and three great-grandchildren. A celebration of his life will be held on April 27th at the Philadelphia United Methodist Church.

    In Loving Memory of

    James J. Hardy
    April 27, 1916 April 6, 2014

    James Joseph Hardy of Philadelphia, NY died peacefully April 6, 2014 surrounded by his loving family. James was born in Philadelphia, NY April 27, 1916 to George and Grace Helmer Hardy. He was one of six children. James attended Philadelphia High School. He joined the United States Military in October of 1940 and served in World War II. After his tour of Duty, James returned home to run the family farm. On November 12, 1945 he married the love of his life, Esther A. Kiechle, at the Philadelphia Methodist Church. Together, the couple operated the farm until it was destroyed by a fire in 1962. Mr. Hardy then worked as a custodian at Indian River Philadelphia Primary School, for many years.

    In retirement, James took time to enjoy bike riding, nature walks, and feeding birds, while remaining deeply involved in the lives of his children and grandchildren, to whom he provided much love, support, and wisdom. James was a fun, caring, loving, generous, positive, and a gentle man. He had a love for life and people. He had a way of leaving an everlasting impression in the lives of those who knew him. James is survived by three daughters, Colleen Hardy, Karen Perea (Fernan), Kim Patterson (Dean); a son, Kevin Hardy (Ashiya); three granddaughters, Kylie Allen (Bryan), Katie Patterson, Tatiana Perea; four grandsons, Trevor Perea (Blyth), Ryan Perea, Alec Perea, Kollin Hardy and three great-grandchildren, Brylie Allen, Brett Allen, and Easton Allen. He is also survived by one sister, Rosie Parnell. He is predeceased by his beloved wife Esther Hardy; a daughter, Kittie Hardy; a son, Mark Hardy; three sisters, Fern Hardy, Ruth Hoffman, and Joy Cleary; and brother Wayne Hardy. A celebration service will be held April 27, 2PM at Philadelphia United Methodist Church with Rev. Dave Snyder, officiating. Feel free to bring a dish to pass for the celebration of James life following the service. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial donations be made to: Philadelphia United Methodist Church 19 Main Street Philadelphia, NY 13673
