WEEKLY UPDATE APRIL 14, 2014

Parents of Students Riding the Bus

April 16 Wednesday
No TRACK PRACTICE Soul Sisters 3:15-4:15 PM

As we near the end of the 2013-14 school year, I would like to thank you for encouraging your student/s to show up with their bus pass each and every day this past school year. Doing so has provided our students with a greater level of safety and security. As explained during initial roll out and distribution, students only receive one free bus pass. Therefore, your students bus passes must be safely stored over the summer months until the start of the new school year to avoid the cost of a replacement. Should your student require a replacement pass, please contact the Bus Pass coordinator by sending an email to buspass@svvsd.org or calling 303-702-7540. The replacement cost for lost, stolen and/or mutilated bus passes is $5.00 and shows up as fee under your students name in Infinite Campus. Sincerely, Randy McKie Director of Transportation

Erie Middle School Community,

Throughout the school year, Erie Middle School (EMS) participates in several safety drills. These drills are conducted to prepare students and staff for a variety of emergency situations. At approximately 12:45pm, on Tuesday, April 15th, EMS will conduct an offsite reunification drill. During this exercise our school will practice a full -scale evacuation and relocate to an undisclosed, safe location. Students will return to Erie Middle School no later than 3:00pm. The Colorado Safe School Act requires we hold this type of drill every three years. Walking is involved during this drill, so please make sure your child wears appropriate shoes and outdoor clothing. If you have any questions about this drill, feel free to contact me directly. Please see the attached document for more information. Sincerely Todd Bissell EMS Principal College Board Pre-AP 303-828-3391 720-438-8302

CMAS: COLORADO MEASURES OF ACADEMIC SUCCESS

Back in August of 2010 the Colorado Department of Education adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Here is a link with information about this adoption: http://www.cde.state.co.us/contentareas/ccss_in_the_colorado_standards Prior to this adoption the state used CSAP as a measure of how well students were doing on the state standards. With the adoption of the CCSS, CSAP made way for the transitional assessment (TCAP), which we just recently completed assessing here at EMS. As we move toward complete implementation of the CCSS, while also maintaining the unique elements within the Colorado State Standards, we will be transitioning to new ways of assessing our students mastery of the standards. During this month of April, we will begin piloting a new testing system called Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS). For this years pilot CMAS will cover 7th grade Social Studies and 8th grade Science. These assessments will occur completely on the computer versus the traditional pencil and test booklet approach that both CSAP and TCAP have taken in the past. Students will be on the following testing schedule: 8th grade Science April 17th, 18th, and 21st 7th grade Social Studies April 22nd, 23rd, 25th In order to help with accurate testing please ensure your students are well rested and present for each day of testing. Please feel free to contact the school at 303.828.3391 with any questions regarding this new assessment pilot.
