PARENT READING
This weeks reading, Are We Paving Paradise?, is a handout I received a few years ago from a former principal. The article traces the evolution of kindergarten from its focus on children, to its focus on outcomes, to its current focus on literacy and math. The author expresses her worry about the early childhood parts of kindergarten losing ground to a growing allocation of time to academic content. The article ends by discussing how the kindergarten experience should be broad based, contextual, and inclusive of all dimensions of development. If you signed up for the Paperless Classroom Communication option, this reading can be found on the right side of our blog under Suggested Parent Readings.

THE PAST TWO WEEKS WE

read SPLISHY-SPLASHY, MUD WALK, THE SCRUBBING MACHINE, WISHY-WASHY DAY, MRS. WISHY-WASHY, DISHY-WASHY, MRS. WISHY-WASHYS TUB, DAN THE FLYING MAN and DAN GOES HOME.

FYI
Kindergartens Art & Music Night is April 22 at 6:00 in conjunction with our PTO meeting. Students will need to wear a bright solid shirt and jeans, pants, or shorts. Since that is Earth Day, we will be singing songs about animals and nature. Friday, April 18th at 8:00, our class will take the final round of the DIBELS assessment, which was discussed earlier in the year at our fall conference. CWES uses a team approach to giving this t est. The team consists of several teachers the children see in the building and has proven to be beneficial for everyone. Parents will receive the results from the 3rd assessment in their childs Friday Folder when they are returned to me.

ONE LAST THING

The Strategic Planning Committee will reconvene for a follow up meeting on Monday, April 21st. I am looking forward to hearing about the future plans of Cary Woods and start seeing the implementation of many peoples hard work. I will be in the building but out of the classroom for this meeting. Hopefully I will be able to check my email at least a couple of times throughout the day however if you need immediate assistance, you can call the school and they will be able to reach me. I will also be absent Wednesday, April 23rd. Our substitute teacher both days will be Ms. Cavender. She has been a sub at CWES a great deal this year and in our classroom a couple of times too. Have a wonderful weekend!!! -S. Jones

NEEDED
I need for every child to bring in 100 pennies (loose in a zip-loc bag or rolled up.) We are starting to use as part of our end-of-the-year culminating activity (market). The children will be earning pennies by doing classroom jobs, working on our store, making items that will be sold
