Art Rules The World

Art Rules, a project of Pancake Gallery Foundation, has been called into existence with the purpose of developing artistic expression and offering arts education to young people in the Caribbean. Offering a 2 week workshop program, Art Rules brings together a team of local and international professionals so they can share and teach their artistic perspectives and skills with the youth. Art Rule-students then get the opportunity to present what they have learned and created during the 2 week workshops in a Multimedia Theatrical showcase for the public. GoWeekly met with twin sisters, Ayra and Ira Kip, who are at the helm of this great project, to talk about the value and importance of Art Rules.
through the construction of iron bridges. It is all about finding your talent and mastering it.

What is your favorite art form to express yourself; and what is your most memorable artistic experience?
Ayra: I am really into film and I cannot live without music. I also love tap dancing. I was a professional tap dancer for over 5 years. Ira: Its obvious that I love theater which is a very ample way of expressing oneself. But I also love listening to music, watching movies and seeing plots develop and come to life on the stage.

What inspires you when you are on the Islands?

Ayra: Most definitely, the people. They are so lively, diverse and very passionate. Ira: The colors, the people and the music. I love it all and it grounds and reminds me of the importance of having my roots and being connected to them.

Tell us something about your artistic background

We grew up as dancers-we started dancing when we were 3 years old. Our mother enrolled us in the Lucia Marthas Dance Academy (Amsterdam) and because we were very energetic as twins she felt that we needed something to channel our creativity and energy. We danced for 10 years and we learned many forms of dancing and loads of other artistic disciplines. All this formed the basis of our life in art. One of the highlights during their
GO 15 | P4 | GO INTERVIEW

dancing years was meeting film icon Audrey Hepburn when they were just 9 years old.

Which factors motivate you to be artistic?

Ayra: We express ourselves through art. We both have a strong background in dance. Ira pursued a career in theater, while I focused on the music industry as a writer and events producer. Aside from that, Art runs in our family. Other people may express themselves through sports or even

How did the collaboration between The Pancake Gallery Foundation and the Art Rules Group come about?
In 2007 we founded the Pancake Gallery Foundation and in 2010 we de-

cided that we wanted to do something for the Caribbean. We established Art Rules Aruba and we have been running this project successfully for a couple of years now. Our goal was to create an art association that was not only focusing on 1 island rather expanding its scope to greater parts of the Caribbean Region, especially the Dutch Caribbean and Suriname, our father is from there. Right now, its Curaaos turn. The Art Rules Group is a collective consisting of different people who are, in one way or the other, involved with art and willing to share and giving back their knowledge to others.

Why did you think it was necessary to start the project on the Islands?
Ayra: The Art Rules Project represents our personal story. We grew up with the arts in the Netherlands. When we were 12, we moved to Aruba and there nothing existed for us to express ourselves artistically. So we took up baseball. While we were still searching for an outlet, we got inspired to do something for the island with regards to art. It was born out of the urgent need for the arts. Ira moved to New York and I moved to Los Angeles and later to London and Sweden where we met various talented people. We came together one day and thought, what if we put these talented people together and take them to the Islands consequently letting them transfer their knowledge and skills to the Caribbean youth? You can say we fill a void for young people today who feel now how we felt years ago.

What is the purpose of your current visit to Curaao and Aruba?

Right now, we are doing a marketing campaign of the Art Rules Project. This includes building relationships with different schools and boards they are part of as we believe in making a personal connection with education by going from school to school and inform teachers and potential students about the project. The reception so far is amazing. We are also researching the cultural sector in Curaao and looking for sponsors on both islands, which is the main challenge. We see that there are a lot of opportunities, but it is hard to get them off the ground. As you see everywhere in this region, there is so much talent that deserves to be educated on an artistic level, we stand here to do everything in our power to provide them the resources. as Iras twin. I define myself and make conscious decisions on who I want and choose to be. Thats why I say, I cut the cookie Ira: Whether it is, Lets go as in, Cmon, stop waiting and just go; or Lets go and do something, are mottos that I use all day and every day. I dont like the act of waiting and I dont like talking too much about plans. What I like to do is to try things out and to do things without fear. So, Lets go! really stands for choosing to go towards LOVE, FAMILY, ART and FOOD-in the moment, right here, right now, without fear!
GO 15 | P5 | GO INTERVIEW

What is your motto?

Ayra: My motto is; Im not cookie cutter, I cut the cookie. To me it basically means, I consider myself not average and I am not about fitting into the perception that people may have of me; personally, professionally or even

Eltons Travel Journal

tska! o dosli in Hrva br Do n! da r ba Do

Im Elton from Curaao, currently on an adventure of travelling & working around the world. I invite you to follow my steps every two weeks here in GoWeekly.
Dubrovnik

My ferry from Bari arrived after 9 uncomfortable hours in Dubrovnik. The most visited city in Croatia was heavily bombed during the Yugoslav war but has been restored completely. Dubrovnik is a true and impressive jewel, worth visiting and full of history!

Montenegro

From Dubrovnik I took advantage and visited Montenegro for one whole day. Kotor was a charming, historical city and seaside city of Budva was worth it too. Driving along the Kotor Lake was the part I enjoyed the most as it offered plenty of gorgeous views to take pictures.

Croatia - Split

I continued in Croatia towards Split in the Dalmatia region to meet a mate who has visited me in Curaao once. I found Split a cool city with its small but nice historic part with Roman ruins and narrow alleys, beaches and a small peninsula adjacent to the city where you can go to relax, walk, jog etc. I really liked the promenade along the harbour, Splitska Riva, with several cafes and bars where young and old hang around in a nice atmosphere.

Biokovo nature Park

In Biokovo Nature Park we drove up the Mount St. Jure and enjoyed stunning views over the Dalmatian coast and its islands! We hiked in the park too and it was quiet, nobody around...just nature, very relaxing! Another day we hiked up the Mosor where I had a delicious typical dish called fazol which is a soup consisting of red kidney beans and pasta. It tasted very similar to bonchi kr in Curaao, so you know what happened to my stomach for the rest of that day! ;-) .
