Assignment 6 Vlad Alexandru Facultatea de Teatru i TV CFM-RO An III Part one of the assignment:

(Floodplain - F. Scott Hess)

In the picture above, gifted to humanity by F. Scott, we can easily remark the effects of the light over the rendering of tensions and atmosphere. The contrast between the cold ubiquitous background light and the warm light projected in contra-plonje, is imposing upon us an air worthy of Fritz Langs expressionist movies. We can also distinguish the function of the light, in its relation to the spaciousness. The aesthetic function of the warm light in this painting, beyond generating a certain dramatism, is consisting of a forthcoming towards the character, a certain empathy through the transcendent.

The background decoration, illuminated in a neo-realist manner, is intriguing the art consumer, forcing him to interact and to stay caught in the universe of the first plane, in contradiction with the empty open space of the second plane. This is because the coldness of the background is creating the need of light, transposed through the texture of the woman into a non-verbal language, in which we can read the rough negative feelings. Regarding the symbolist dimension, we can acknowledge the importance denoted by the special position of this idea. In a cultural way, we perceive the light of the lantern as a reflector used to reveal the monuments and the buildings of the modern cities, at night time. Therefore, the picture of the woman facing the affliction of birth, illuminated by the flash-lamp, metamorphoses the concept of life, a monument of the nature. At the same time, the advantage of using a spot-light kind of light is the one of outlining the forms and restoring their genuine vitality. The chiaroscuro is tracing the whole figure, where the colors seem to get alive, contextualizing the whole as an omnipresent part in our tridimensional universe. Conclusively, F. Scott manages to impress the contemporary art audience by using the light in a modernist manner, but at the same time placing us, the living beings, on a pedestal of genesis, into a primordial scenery. Part two of my assignment:

( Self-portrait - Alexandru Vlad ) In the second part of the homework, I desired to present the idea of an inner conflict between the subconscious and the conscious, conflict transposed through the perspective of a chess match between these two characters. The light is aiding the initial concept by transforming the characters in some dynamic figures. Therefore, the resulting shadows are emphasizing the dramatism of the scene, introducing the spectator into a constant reference to the current moment of the action. Again, similar to the first example, the role of the light is to mark out a cold, deaf empathising, in which the desire to evade is limited to the area of the current scene.

Just as every path is defined by a direction and a goal, this photo is indicating through its hues, which are carefully highlighted through the light of the unmistakable pattern of an inside game concept, having as a symbol the chess game (a mind game). To conclude, the whole drama or fight starts from our culturally defined ability to recognize symbols that have been immersed in the depth of our subconscious throughout thousands of years, under the lights of the camp fires, from all over the world.
