Church, an Eagle Court of Honor was held, and Matthews became an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scout of America. As the audience heard, earning the rank of Eagle marks a scout for life. Eagle Scout is the highest rank in Boy Scouting. According to the Boy Scouts of America website, in 2012 only 7% of scouts attained the rank of Eagle. Becoming an Eagle is more than earning merit badges, it includes meeting leadership requirements, showing that scout principles are lived throughout a scouts daily life, volunteering and helping the community. Each Eagle Scout is responsible for the completion of a special project. In Matthews case that project was to completely the refinish the stage in the fellowship hall of the Stanhope United Methodist Church. . He repainted the walls and ceiling and had the floor sanded and refinished. It was then fitting that his Court of Honor was held on that same stage. Following an invocation by the Rev. Tom Kinter of the church, Matthews and then his parents, Barbara and Dave, were escorted to the stage. After this, Matthews troop, Troop 151 of Byram did the Scout Law Candlelighting ceremony. As each candle was lit, a scout shared one of the

Local Eagle Scout Alex Livesey came forward to share the requirements of an Eagle Scout. Paul Grzywacz, chairman of Troop 151, who talked about the obligations of an Eagle Scout was the first to say that Matthews was a marked man, a leader, and that was to be lived Grzywacz shared a quote from Shakespeares Richard II, My honor is my life;[ both grow in one. Take honor from me, and my life is done] Gerry Serpico, committee member of Troop 151 echoed Grzywaczs marked man sentiments. He noted that Matthews has an obligation to his fellow scouts, country, and God as an Eagle and told him, the badge will get heavier as you get older. Matthews addressed the audience and thanked his scoutmasters and parents, those who supported him and encouraged him to stick to it when he wanted to quit. continued on page 4

That made him especially happy to share in the event. In what would be a sort of coming round circle, the Eagle Scout prayer was read by Scott Lefurge of Byram. Lefurge was Matthews cub scoutmaster and saw him start on the road to the Eagle. Also, retired pastor Rev. Harry DeKolf of Pennsylvania, who had confirmed Matthews in the church where they stood, gave the benediction.

believe is the crucified and risen Messiah / Christ. said the Rev. Hugh Matlack, pastor of the Presbyterian Church. Joining the Presbyterian church in reading the Good Friday scriptures from the Bible look of Luke will be representatives of Port Morris United Methodist Church (Landing), Stanhope United Methodist Church (Netcong) and St. Michaels Roman Catholic Church (Netcong). After hearing the scripture at the Presbyterian church, walkers will proceed down the street. Volunteers will lead the way carrying a cross. The next reading stop will be near Bells Mansion, and from there walkers will go on to the Stanhope United Methodist Church. The cross walk gives the churches of the community the opportunity to express that we might be different in our worship and liturgy; however, we come together as one to remember and give thanks for what Jesus Christ has done for every one of us. It gives us the time to get out into the community as a united witness of our faith. Its just a few minutes in ones day to walk and reflect on the love of our God, through his Son, said the Rev. Tom Kinter, pastor of the Methodist church. The walk will continue to an area outside the Netcong train station for another reading From there, walkers will move on to the last stop: St. Michaels Roman Catholic Church.. This will be my first Holy Week to be celebrated here in St. Michaels Church. I was delighted to learn about the twentyyear-old custom of commemorating the passion and death of our Savior, Jesus Christ, with our fellow Christians from the surrounding communities. The conclusion of this observance will take place at St. Michaels with the reading of the final passages from the Gospel account of Jesus suffering and dying. I personally wish to encourage all Christians in the area to join with us, said Father Adam Muda, pastor of St. Michaels Church in Netcong.

For Christians, one of those men was their Christ and that day would become one of the holiest in their calendar, Good Friday. On Friday, April 18th at 11am, that final walk of Christ will be remembered through a Good Friday ecumenical cross walk that will start at the First Presbyterian Church of Stanhope on 100 Main Street in Stanhope and end at St. Michaels Roman Catholic Church at 4 Church Street in Netcong. In a cross walk, a cross is carried, with walkers following it, stopping periodically to hear the Good Friday scriptures. Several areas churches are participating and all are welcomed to join in walking all or any portion of the walk. Churches really have more in common than it might seem. One week before states, TJ was practicing with another state champ, when "he put his arm down the wrong way and sprained his elbow. They iced the elbow everyday and concealed the injury so the opponent would not take advantage of TJ's weakness. "It definitely hurt him when he was wrestling, but he went through with it anyway," says Morton. Two weeks after winning states, TJ competed in the Mid Atlantic Wrestling Association District Qualifier District Wrestling Competition in Middletown, NY, also placing on top as the champion for his weight category. He was scheduled to compete in the Regional Qualifier in Coal Twp., PA, on Sunday, April 6; followed by Eastern Nationals On May 3 and 4 in Salisbury, MD. TJ - who also plays baseball every spring - just started wrestling three years ago; before that he played football. "He gave up football," says Morton. TJ had wanted to go to wrestling practice when football was five days a week, so he quit football "just to concentrate on wrestling." TJ's parents noticed their son's interest in the sport a few years back when he would wrestle on the playground with his peers. "We said you couldn't do that" on the playground, "so we took him where he could." Nine-year old TJ Morton, a fourth grader at Netcong Elementary School, won the 2014 NJ Kids State Wrestling Championship last month for the Novice 50, age nine and ten year old bracket. The tournament was held Sunday, March 16, at Sun National Bank Center in Trenton. A full year of hard work and commitment turned TJ into a champion. "He worked real hard over the course of the year," says TJ's father, Todd Morton. TJ tried last year to get to compete in states, "but he didn't even place." His dad says, "It's all hard work. He puts in a lot of effort in practice. It's not a natural talent; he has to work. He put a lot of time into it." Wrestling for the past three years, TJ currently wrestles for two teams: the NJ Scorpions Wrestling School in Fairfield, year round; and Lenape Valley Wrestling during the season. He was representing the Scorpions when he won states. This year, out of eight qualifiers, TJ was one of three place winners to advance to the state tournament, in which he competed in the 50 pound weight category against 15 other boys his age. In order to win states, wrestlers had to win four matches. "One match was against a kid he never beat before," says Morton, who also coaches his son "for all the extra tourna-

Last Supper Comes to Life

by Elsie Walker hey were His friends, His trusted companions, His disciples. He had shared everything with them. In turn, they had come to realize that Jesus was something other than just a carpenter from Nazareth. He was much more, perhaps even the Messiah. However, that was all about to change and very quickly. The disciples had no idea that they were about to have their last supper with Himor that even more shockingly, one of them would betray him into the hands of death The Last Supper will come to life on Thursday, April 17th at 7:30pm at the Stanhope United Methodist Church. All are invited to attend this free drama. The church is located at #2 Route 183 in Netcong. A tradition for many years, members of

the churchs United Methodist Mens group and their friends will take on the roles of Jesus and His disciples. For years, Bruce Bristol, of Landing, has played the disciple, John. As John, I have been part of Jesus' inner circle, sharing his trials and victories. I have come to understand and convince many people that by believing in Jesus you will not perish, but have everlasting life. Come so that you can understand why we believe. Rounding out the cast are local area residents: Angelo Benincasa (James the Lesser), Randy Schrader (Matthew), Jayson Daniels (Nathaniel), Steve Wootton (James), Jim Oscovitch (Andrew), Fred Eckert (Thomas), Scott LeFurge (Judas), Orson Gale (Phillip), Rick Munoz (Thaddeus), Jason Worthington (Simon the Zealot), Fred Samson (Peter) and Tony Reis (Jesus). As each disciples comes to the table, he reflects on his relationship with Jesus and asks the agonizing question, Is it I Lord? Following the drama, communion will be celebrated. Rev. Tom Kinter, pastor of the church, said that the communion is open to all who want to partake in it. Kinter also reflected on the drama: When you sit and watch the Last Supper Drama, as each disciple comes into the room and takes his place at the table, the words of the scriptures come off the page and become real. You are in the room with Jesus and his disciples, the breaking of the bread and the sharing of the cup become real.

he Hopatcong Board of Education supported and approved a Full-Day Kindergarten program for the 2014 2015 school year. The audience applauded the 8 yes, 0 no votes from the Board of Education at its March meeting. I cant tell you how excited and pleased I am with the Board of Educations decision, said Principal Tracey Hensz. With the new Common Core requirements, our students will now be able to progress and soar like all other students who are afforded a Full-Day Kindergarten program.

presented at the Board meeting, worked hard all year long with her students and supported the full-day concept from the beginning. What a difference I witnessed in the students overall academic, emotional, and social growth this year. They have the time to truly learn. I am ecstatic that the Board approved and supported this initiative. Kindergarten students, Ashly Sgroi and Lauren Bastedo, can be seen below assessing their own writing skills using a Rubric, a skill Mrs. Mortello worked so hard on this

year with her students. This was a process that Mrs. Mortello took very seriously. First she had to teach her kindergarten students to become independent in their own writing. This took lots of modeling and mini-lessons from Mrs. Mortello. Each skill from the Assessment Rubric was taught in isolation first and in the end the students had no problem writing and assessing their own work. Students stand proud of their work. All her students are currently reading on grade level too!

n March the students in Mrs. Parellos first grade class and Mrs. Mortellos kindergarten class joined together as reading partners to practice one of their Daily Five literacy tasks, Read to Someone. The Daily Five is a series of literacy tasks that help students to develop the daily habits of reading, writing and working with

favorite stories. They participated in I Read, You Read and Check for Understanding. One student read their book while the other student listened carefully and held a checkmark for understanding. The listener summarized what was read on each page. Then the partners switched roles. The students also offered

reading support when a student was unsure about a word. They asked the student if they wanted coaching or time? If they wanted time, they gave their partner think time to apply a known reading strategy. If they wanted coaching, the partner offered suggestions as to what reading strategies to try. A coaching bookmark with picture clues for each strategy was used for support. Reading with someone helps the students to read independently and grow as readers. Research shows that taking turns reading increases reading involvement, attention and collaboration. Students love partner reading and will readily do it with books of their own choosing. The students thoroughly enjoyed reading, discussing books, sharing their thinking and learning with their new friends. They are looking forward to their next shared learning experience.

Ashley and Christopher share a story during Read to Someone. Christopher listens and checks for understanding as Ashley reads Hats.

Abilities Celebrates 40th Anniversary; Offers Great Support System To Disabled Individuals In Morris, Warren Counties And Beyond

By Ejvind Boccolini regional non-profit agency is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, after making great strides with respect to helping out disabled individuals in our community. This agency, Abilities of Northwest New Jersey, has provided greater hope and independence to these individuals over the 40 years and continues to create new, cuttingedge programs to build upon their great cause. We celebrate the success of this nonprofit agency now, and we thank them. Abilities works with individuals to improve their quality of life and their employability. It is a private, not-for-profit community rehabilitation program providing vocational training and employment services for individuals with disabilities since 1974. If members of the public did not know much about Abilities, they may also not be aware of some of the programs there. They offer screen printing, embroidery (their advertisements say well beat the competition!), labeling, assembly, mailings, box assembly, quality control, weighing and

bagging, and more. This is why schools, organizations, and many local and regional businesses call upon them for the many services they offer. Abilities has six employment centers throughout Warren County and serves about 350 individuals throughout Warren, Morris, Hunterdon, and Sussex Counties each day by offering a full array of community-integrated employment and day program services. Theres a huge need in our community, said Business Developer Charissa Rahill, adding that without Abilities, these individuals would be fending for themselves with no support system. Rahill said a big priority is to always get out there and make sure people know that were here. Sue Zukowski, Chief Development Officer, said that staff members do an excellent job and are a great reason that Abilities succeeds. The staff needs to be commended so much, she said, speaking of the 120 employees on its professional staff. continued on next page

Employees also gain pride from earning a paycheck. The local and regional businesses also benefit. They can send their product, for example, a pallet of soup cans which needs relabeling with a corrected expiration date, and employees at Abilities can finish this job and repack them back onto the pallet and send them back to the corporation. This win-win situation is what Abilities is great at, day in, day out. And the increased morale and skill building for employees is not the only benefit. Abilities also creates new initiatives to help the community through their work programs. For example, with the SustainAbilities Electronics Recycling program, they accept old items free of charge (such as computers and their accessories, LCD monitors, small kitchen appliances, copy machines, printers, vacuums); and also other items for a small fee (such as Freon items, $35; CRT monitors and TVs up to 32, $20). This green initiative greatly helps the

community, and the Abilities individuals will earn some money, independence, and a sense of pride. Additional information on this and other programs can be found at www.abilities.com. Abilities can offer pickup service for corporations as well, and Zukowski said they hope to partner with more municipalities on their cleanup days. With these and other programs, individuals working at Abilities can greatly improve their skill set, and are involved with sustainability in the case of this green recycling program. Again, its a sustainable action, said Rahill. She added that were working on some other green initiatives, that still have the opportunity to provide skill building for employees. (With respect to recycling computers and hard drives, Abilities also offers Certified Data Destruction for a small fee.) So, with spring cleaning, Abilities can really help out if we call upon them for help with a job. It all goes to show that Abilities is an evolving and changing organization one that is still fulfilling their great cause after 40 years.

Aggressive Pothole Repair Campaign Underway In Morris County

The county advises residents who encounter a pothole on a county road to report it via e-mail to PlanningPublicWorks@co.morris.nj.us or to call the county garage in Hanover Township at 973-285-6763. The countys pothole repair campaign is part of the Freeholder Boards 2014 capital budget, which contains $775,900 more this year to repave county roads than it did last year. The Freeholders increased county spending for road repaving from the 2013 level of $1.4 million to $2.2 million. Another $3.9 million will be coming from the state and $1.16 million will come from the federal government. While the Freeholders continue an overall reduction of capital projects from previous spending levels to reduce the countys debt, they continue to invest in infrastructure maintenance and improvements.

orris County has undertaken an aggressive program to fill the potholes left behind on county-maintained roads by Old Man Winter. The countys Roads, Bridges and Shade Tree Division has six crews out in force along the 300 miles of county roadways, locating and filling potholes. To assist the workers and to reduce the hazardous driving conditions potholes create for motorists, the Morris County Freeholders added $75,000 to the 2014 capital budget for the purchase of two Hot Boxes to add to the two others purchased by the county in 2013. A Hot Box keeps the asphalt used to fill a pothole heated at the right temperature to ensure a better, longer-lasting repair. Without such equipment, a pothole is filled with asphalt from the rear of a pickup truck, with the material losing heat as it is transported.

Pet Photos With the Easter Bunny To Benefit Coming Home Rescue
About Coming Home Rescue: Coming Home Rescue is a volunteer based, 501(c)3 organization focused on helping homeless animals in shelters throughout New Jersey. It is estimated that approximately 38,000 animals were euthanized in the state of New Jersey last year alone. Coming Home Rescue is dedicated to reducing that number by rescuing and re-homeing as many dogs from these shelters as possible. We have saved over 650 dogs since starting in 2009.

Looking For Our Forever Home

oming Home Rescue, a 501(c)3 non-profit dog rescue organization, will host a Pet Photos with the Easter Bunny event at Rockaway Garden Center, 296 Route 46, Rockaway, NJ, on Saturday, April 12, 2014 from 10am-3pm. All proceeds will aid the dog rescue group in saving more dogs in New Jersey. Photos are $8 each or two for $15 and can include pets, kids or the entire family. To learn more about Coming Home Rescue, see upcoming adoption dates and view all dogs available for adoption, visitwww.cominghomerescue.org.

Here are Betty and Wilma from Eleventh Hour Rescue who are 3 year old hound mix sisters. They belonged to an elderly man who could no longer properly care for them. A family took the dogs in and then to their surprise discovered that they were both pregnant. The dogs delivered and the pups were adopted, but the Moms were left behind. Both dogs are now fully vetted, spayed and micro-chipped and are ready to go. They do not need to be adopted together. Both dogs are housebroken and very sweet natured, and have now learned to walk on a leash. If you are interested in these lovely ladies, please read more about them and fill out an application by visiting: www.ehrdogs.org or call: 973-664-0865.

This is Bear Barnwell from Eleventh Hour Rescue. Bear Barnwell is a very handsome, 4 year old, male, Chow Chow mix. His owner unfortunately passed away and his remaining family members couldnt take him in so he was left at a shelter. Once his time was up at the shelter, Eleventh Hour Rescue stepped in to save him from a different fate. He is a good boy who likes human companionship. He can be shy at first meeting and would prefer a quiet home without much excitement. He is used to living in a home environment, so he is housetrained and walks well on a leash too. Nickelodeon in 1910 Claimed Thomas Edison as the Who's Who in the Film Game
was definitely the most hi-tech sports coverage of the 19th Century. We can imagine what a hoot it must have been to have a follow up film a month later of two cats boxing. The Edison movie studio would coin new tongue in cheek lexicons that have lasted into the 21st Century. The studio was called the Black Maria. It was erected and unveiled in December 1892, on the lot of Edisons lab and factory location in West Orange, NJ. It was a black hulking wood and tarpaulin structure. Edison first promoted it as the Kinetographic Theater. But, its comic name the Black Maria (a moniker for the police paddy wagon) became its popular name that stuck. It jokingly did have the qualities of a boxy policy paddy wagon especially since it was black in color and had wheels. Today the name Black Maria conjures legendary short cinematic artistry but, in its era the name brought a little chuckle from its theater stage performers. In 1981 the popular film festival and annual completion of short format films (less than one hour) was named the Black Maria Film Festival in honor of Thomas Edisons first motion picture studio. Would the festival have been called the Kinetographic Theater Film Festival if Edison didnt have a sense of humor in accepting comic names for his inventions? Another interesting parallel to the 21st Century is that Edison believed that video shows should be made for individual private viewing. It took some convincing to make him accept that an entire group of people would be interested in watching a film in a theater. Would he not have the last laugh seeing all the individual video display devices we have

by Michele Guttenberger any think of Thomas Edison as an inventor of the incandescent light bulb or phonograph but, few realize the cultural impact he had for creating the worlds first motion picture studio that still parallels to todays digital video culture. The worlds first motion picture studio was built by Thomas Edison in 1893. History also gives credit to Edisons lead staff engineer William Kennedy Laurie Dickson, who not only helped to develop the motion picture cameras and projectors but also produced these short motion picture films. The most humorous popular videos on YouTube are the antics of cats. Thomas Edison thought cats were cool to film too. His new film production company -Thomas Edison Inc., filmed two cats boxing in 1894. Professor Henry Welton had an entire stage comedy act that featured cats trained to perform all kinds of skits. So, cat videos were being made before the 20th century. Ironically the boxing cats were captured on film using a movie camera that was nicknamed the Doghouse by Edison because of its size and wooden composition.
