"lace in (ondon) The four-day session will end on March 14) The committee on SS# is e*"ected to address a number of 'ey issues in the on!oin! session) +urin! the meetin!, the Industry (ifeboat ,rou" %I(,& raised concerns o-er a "ractical im"lementation of the !uidelines for e-aluation and re"lacement of lifeboat release and retrie-al systems) The Maritime Safety ommittee, at its ./th session, ado"ted amendments to SO(0S cha"ter III, the (S0 ode and the a""ro-ed associated !uidance) These new re$uirements ha-e been in force since 1anuary 1, 2013 and now the industry needs to ensure that the new measures are "ro"erly im"lemented in our effort to eliminate accidents with lifeboats due to failure of lifeboat release hoo's) The session also discussed the de-elo"ment of re$uirements for onboard liftin! a""liances and winches) 2eferrin! to the hi!h number of accidents resultin! from mechanical failure of liftin! a""liances onboard shi"s causin! serious in3uries and fatalities, the meetin! em"hasised that this issue is essential for the safety of "ersonnel onboard) The Sub- ommittee is also e*"ected to discuss a number of issues related to smo'e control and -entilation in this session) In "articular, amendments to SO(0S re!ulation II-2420 and associated !uidance on air $uality mana!ement for -entilation of closed -ehicle s"aces, closed ro-ro and s"ecial cate!ory s"aces and amendments to the "ro-isions of SO(0S cha"ter II-2 relatin! to secondary means of -entin! car!o tan's) On the de-elo"ment of a new framewor' of re$uirements for safety ob3ecti-es and functional re$uirements for the a""ro-al of alternati-e desi!n and arran!ements for SO(0S cha"ters II 1 %"arts , + and #& and cha"ter III, the Sub- ommittee reminded that +# 56 a!reed, in "rinci"le, to the draft !oal-based !uidelines on a framewor' of re$uirements for shi"s7 life-sa-in!

a""liances) The draft !uidelines should be submitted to the Maritime Safety ommittee once the wor' on the de-elo"ment of safety ob3ecti-es and functional re$uirements has been finalised)
