Teacher: Morgan King School: MSU Elementary Equipment Used: Cones, Styrofoam balls
Class: KIN 355 Grade Level: 2nd grade Time: 10:30 AM Targeted NASPE Standard(s): NASPE Standards 1, 2, 5, 6
Specific Objective: By the end of this lesson, students will recognize and understand how alcohol impairs a persons information-processing skills and hand-eye coordination skills by answering the following question, Does alcohol slow down or speed up the functions of the brain and hand eye coordination? (Slow down) Is more difficult to participate in physical activity when under the influence of alcohol? (Difficult) Concomitant Objective: Students will participate in activities that will allow them to experience how alcohol can affect a persons brain and motor functions while staying physically active. Transition: For this activity, we need to split up into 7 different teams. Count off by 7 I will point to each cone with the number. When I say go, you may walk to the your cone. Learnable Piece: Alcohol negatively affects our informationprocessing skillsyour brains ability to think and receive information from your environment, as well as your motor functionsyour ability to move, such as your hand-eye coordination. Today, you will participate in an
activity where you will have to achieve certain tasks while feeling some of the impairments of alcohol.
Presentation of New Material/Directions: Round 1: First, we will practice throwing without any impairments. One person in your group may pick up the ball and begin throwing until I say Freeze. Round 2: We will be throwing in the same groups. But there is a catch! When throwing and catching the ball, you cant bend your elbows. Round 3: The last round ALL of you are going to spread apart from your group until you're an arms reach away from everyone, and spin three times. When everyone is finished
spinning, one person make pick up the ball and begin playing catch. SAFETY: o Make sure to be aware of the people around you, the ball and your throwing o Keep the ball in your cone area as we don't want anyone to get hit o In our next few rounds, it is important to keep spread out with our eyes open CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDI NG o What is our first round consistin g of? o Throwin g and catching o What are we not
doing the second round? o Bending our elbows o How many times are we spinning before we play catch the third round? o Three Transition: When I say go, the first round of just catching and throwing will begin Round 1: Go, give 30 seconds, freeze Round 2: Go, 30 seconds, freeze Round 3: Go, 30 seconds, freeze Circle around me for lesson review Guided Activity Time with Feedback:

Possible Modifications: If it is too easy, increase number of spins, or increase the number of balls being thrown. If it is too hard, decrease the number of spins. Lesson Review: Who noticed a difference in their ability to perform the tasks during the second round and third round? Was it easier or harder after the first round? Why? Harder because our body functions were limited and our minds were hazy When you drink alcohol, your motor functions and ability to think and process things correctly is affected and impaired. Does alcohol slow down or
speed up the functions of the brain and motor movements? Alcohol slows down the functions of the brain and our motor movements Now you can all understand just how dangerous alcohol truly is.
