Alissa Zalewski EDR 321 Winter 2014 Surface Area of Spheres Part One Tentative date: May 16th

I. Benchmarks/Standards: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.GMD.A.1 Give an informal argument for the formulas for the circumference of a circle, area of a circle, volume of a cylinder, pyramid, and cone. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.GMD.A.3 Use volume formulas for cylinders, pyramids, cones, and spheres to solve problems. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.GMD.B.4 Identify the shapes of two-dimensional cross-sections of three-dimensional objects, and identify three-dimensional objects generated by rotations of twodimensional objects. Behavioral/Objective: The learner will review finding area for rectangles, circles, and hexagons. The learn will find the surface area of a handball using basically knowledge of 2-diementional shapes. The students will begin to understand the meaning of surface area for a sphere. Anticipatory Set: Students will begin with a warm-up review. The students will recall how to find the area of rectangles, circles, and hexagons. Objective/Purpose: Today we will begin learning about spheres! Today I will introduce surface area of a sphere with an activity. By the end of the class period, you should have a good understand of what surface area of a sphere is. Input: a. Task Analysis: i. Warm up 1. Area and perimeter of handball court. 2. Area and circumference of a circle. 3. Area of hexagons. ii. Teacher leads discussion over warm-up questions. iii. Guided discovery worksheet. Students will work in their table groups. 1. Teacher models and explain activity. 2. Students calculate surface area of handball by calculating area of one hexagon on ball then multiplying by the number of hexagons on the ball. 3. Teacher circulates classroom.

Learning Styles and/or Accommodations: i. Remediation: The lesson will incorporate the following learning styles: visual, kinesthetic, and collaboration. c. Method and Materials: i. Ways of presenting: Hands-on activities, discussion, demonstration, and group work. ii. Materials needed: Worksheet, warm-up questions, Elmo, calculator, rulers, exit passes. VI. Modeling: a. The teacher will model how to do the activity and model problems from warm up. Check for Understanding: a. Warm-up. b. Circulating room while students are working. c. Exit passes. d. Check answers on worksheet, especially short answer. Closure: With 5 minutes left of class, students will receive an exit pass. Students will be given 1 question that must be turned in by the ends of the class period on Socrative. a. Explain surface area of a sphere and what does it measure?
