Introduction EN1317
CEN published EN1317-1 and -2 in 98
GRD1-2002-70021
EN1317 is a performance standard for road restraint systems The experience of applying EN1317 (some hundred tests performed) raised some questions To answer to such questions new scientific knowledge is needed This requires a research project

Questions to be answered
GRD1-2002-70021
Relevance of EN1317 to safety in real life accidents Uncertainty of vehicle acceleration measurements in crash tests Repeatability of tests made in different laboratories Final choice of a Severity Criterion
The need of research was firstly acknowledged by WG1 WG1 promoted a European Reserch Project A Dedicated Call was published in 2000 under Measurement and Testing The proposal was submitted in fall 2001 The Program started in February 2002
Project objectives
Consider the relevance of EN1317 in respect of real life and provide data to assist updating Develop knowledge and understanding on some of the questions which are still open to interpretation in EN1317 Define improved methodologies for measurements and data acquisition in impact tests Improve reliability and general acceptance of computational mechanics applications for impacts against vehicle restraint systems Develop a sound and generally acceptable scientific basis for the standard severity criterion for acceptance of road restraint systems

Concluding Remarks
GRD1-2002-70021
Project progress is ahead of schedule Research is well focused on some crucial items Results will allow a significant step forward The final results will include recommendations for upgrading EN1317 Such recommendations will be submitted to TG1 for review and subsequently to WG1
