Introduction a. The use of technology in the classroom and in the school building is a privilege. Within this classroom, it is important to know that we use technology to help further learning and experience. Therefore, it is my duty to construct this Acceptable Use Policy to underline the guidelines and restrictions through which technology will be used, for the safety of everyone involved, for the betterment of education, and for the outside classroom experience that technology can provide. b. The following sections outline two major forms/modes of technology that can be used within the classroom, along with various policies and restrictions dealing specifically with those technologies. These two technologies are: i. Information or data accessed or transferred within the school/classroom environment; and ii. Technological devices brought on school grounds Information/Data within the Classroom a. Access i. Students will have access to research organizations and world news. ii. Students will have access to e-mail and certain social networking sites, such as Twitter. iii. Students will have access to district webpages, such as the school website. iv. Students will have access to the classroom wikispaces site. v. Students will have access to websites not included in the categories above only if deemed acceptable for educational use b. Restrictions i. I reserve the right to restrict any websites or material due to threats to legality or safety within the classroom. ii. Students are instructed to use Internet access only within the grounds of education while on school property Technological Devices a. Allowed i. Students are allowed to use the school computers/laptops for educational use ii. Students are allowed to use cell phones, tablets, e-readers, and other Personal Technology Devices as permitted by me at only acceptable times during class (i.e., when we are not having a class discussion, class presentations of projects, or other activities which require similarly full attention) and only for educational purposes (i.e., using a cell phone to connect to a class Twitter discussion or a poll from Poll Everywhere). iii. Students are only allowed to use Personal Technology Devices in my class for non-educational reasons if permitted by me (i.e., if students are performing a silent activity, outside of a test or other formal academic evaluation, I may allow students to listen to music with a headset or a set of earphones) b. i. Students are not to use devices that are in a way that causes a disturbance or a distraction to the learning environment, such as devices that play music, make loud noises, or flash bright lights, unless given clearance by me beforehand (i.e., for use as a presentation aid). ii. While students are allowed to have Personal Technology Devices on their person, they are not to use them in class unless permitted by me (see Policy III.a.ii) Disclaimer (adapted from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools AUP) a. I am not responsible for theft, loss, or damages to any Personal Technology Device brought into the classroom b. I am not responsible for injuries resulting from a students use of technology within my classroom, no matter to whom the technology belongs to.
