Ballina Review Volume 8 April 2014
Championship
On Sunday the 13th of April, Ballina played their first game in the 2014 Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship. This was new ground for the club as very few if any can remember the last time Ballina played at Senior Championship level. If the competition was unfamiliar, the opposition & venue were anything but strange. MacDonagh Park, Nenagh was the venue, while Borrisokane provided the opposition. The sides last met in Championship hurling in the 2010 North Intermediate Competition. Ballina won on that occasion, but Borrisokane went on to win the county championship. Ballina started with the wind & were 1-5 to 0-2 ahead by the stage. At half-time the lead had grown to 2-10 to 0-6. Ballina were well deserving of this half-time advantage, but expected a battle from Borris in the second-half. The first 20 minutes of the second half saw Ballina outscore their opponents by 4 points to 3. Ballinas only added one more point over the closing 10 minutes while Borrisokane raised 3-more white flags. In the end Ballina won by 2-15 to 0-12.
Ballina Team: Martin McKeogh; Brian McKeogh, Patrick Cosgrove, Donal Kent; Aidan Hanley, Thomas Collins, Kevin Cosgrove (Captain); Stephen OBrien, Fergal Collins; Sean McKeogh, Brian Stritch, Stephen Stritch; T.J. OConnell, Michael Breen, David Hickey. Subs used: Eoin Sheehy; Conor Maguire & Ronan Bourke. On Sunday evening in Clonmel, Mullinahone beat Ballingarry by 1-point in the other game in the group. Final Score: C.J. Kickhams Mullinahone 1-11, Ballingarry 3-04. Ballinas next game is against Mullinahone & rd th this will probably be the weekend of 3 /4 or th th 10 /11 May.
Shortly after that, Ballina will take on Silvermines in Round 1 of the Hibernian Inn North Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship.

Challenge Cup
Ballina played Holycross/Ballycahill in the semi-final of the Jim Devitt Cup on Sunday 30th March in Ballina. Again this was a close game & could have gone either way. In the end Holycross prevailed on a scoreline of 1-13 to 0-15. Prior to that Ballina had received a walk-over from Mullinahone at the Quarter Final stage. Page 1 @ballinagaa

Junior B Hurling League
On a wet & miserable Saturday 29th March; Ballina played out a hard fought draw with Borrisokane in Round 1 of the North Tipperary Junior B Hurling League. On a day not suited to good hurling, both sides will be happy with a draw. Ballina 0-10, Borrisokane 1-07.

Clare. As a result they are promoted to Division 3 for next year. Our own Stephen OBrien has played a vital role in the this promotion & hopefully will line out in Croke Park in the final at 5pm on Saturday next. Best of luck Stephen & Tipperary. Michael Breen is also part of the Senior Hurling Squad who will take on Clare in the National League Semi-final on Sunday in Limerick. Best wishes. Tipperary lost out to Cork in the Munster Under-21 Football Semi-final. Stephen OBrien & Jack Brady were part of the panel. Stephen scored a goal from his midfield position. Jack is also the Tipperary Minor Footballer goalkeeper and played in the teams 2-11 to 2-7 Round 1 victory over Waterford in Dungarvan. Tipp will play Kerry in the semi-final on the 7th or 14th May, probably in Thurles. Good luck to all players who are part of North & County Tipperary squads (Hurling, Football or Camogie)

picked up in the last few weeks. The management are top class and they are doing everything they can to ensure we are at our best for championship You got the chance to lift the North & County IHC Cups last year - did it put any extra pressure on yourself as captain? No not really. The pressure I feel most is probably the pressure I put on myself. I would always put pressure on myself to do the best for the team. I was just representing a very dedicated and motivated bunch of guys who have a great desire to be successful for their club. It makes the role of captain a lot easier when this is the case.
Ballina Intermediate Hurling Captain 2013, David Hickey took some time out to talk with the Bal An tha Review during the week. David also won an AllIreland Doubles Handball title in 2013. His partner on the occasion was Fergal Collins. David thanks for taking time to talk to the Bal An tha review. The SHC started last weekend - how did it feel to finally play at Senior? It felt great to be part of the panel that became the first to ever represent Ballina at senior level. Its something that this group of players and management feel privileged and honoured to have done, not just for themselves but for the whole club. Playing at senior level is where our club deserves to be and hopefully will be successful for many years to come. The County Championship also includes Ballingarry & Mullinahone in the group, while its Silvermines in the North Championship. What do ye know about the two southern teams? We know they will be very tough games and we will treat them with the respect they deserve but we wont fear them. How is training going this year? Training is going well this year. We were caught for numbers a bit at the start of the year but it has really
Was there any particular games that stood out last year & why? The semi-final (V Aherlow). A very tough game and one which seemed to galvanise the whole team because of the manner of the victory. Favourite Book? Ross O Carroll Kelly Favourite Movie? Braveheart Favourite TV Programme? Friends Favourite Food? Steak and homemade chips What do you do to relax? Sunday afternoon on the couch reading the papers and watching the sunday game. Other Sports Played? Handball, Gaelic Football, Soccer.

Then they have been put through their dancing paces & steps on top of that. They have had to listen to dance teachers & managers. After all that 6 Couples will represent Ballina in a Battle Royal with Portroe on the Dancefloor in Brian Boru on the Hill this Sunday evening. Its the #BallinaPortroeSCD Grand Final & now they have to go before a thorough Judging Panel of International Golfer Christy OConnor Jnr, Dance Teacher Marie Hogan, former Tipperary PRO & Camogie President - Liz
