April 18, 2014 Adolescent Health MATH

Unit 8 is called Perimeter and Area. In this unit we reviewed the concepts of perimeter and area. We looked at the perimeter of the work triangles in our kitchens, which are the distances between the stove, refrigerator and sink. Next we focused on area. We figured out through practice that there is a formula for finding areas of rectangles and parallelograms and next week we will find the formula for area of triangles.

We will have a district parent meeting on the Adolescent Health curriculum for 4th and 5th grade parents on April 24th. It will be held at 7:00 pm at Cannonsburg Elementary. Parents will preview the both the male and female version of the video Just Around the Corner. Parents attending will also receive a curriculum packet of information that we give to the students. Mrs. Walla and I are planning on teaching Adolescent Health to the fourth graders on the Friday before Memorial weekend (Friday, May 23). Permission slips will be sent home next week for your child to participate in the program. It is not possible to make up the instruction taught on this day by the teachers.

The fourth grade field trip to AirZoo in Kalamazoo is next Thursday, April 24. Our classroom has 12 amazing parents attending with our students. This will be awesome! Because of the size of the classrooms and the amount of parents, the fourth graders will have two busses going on the trip - one bus for our classroom and another for Mrs. Wallas classroom. Because we have two busses, EVERY PARENT CAN RIDE THE BUS! If youd still like to drive separately, you may. Please look for chaperone information to go home next week Monday.

Field Trip

After wrapping up our magnetism and electricity unit last week, our class moved on to our next science unit. We started a unit called Organisms in the Environment. We welcomed dwarf African frogs, guppies and snails into our classroom. The students went outside to observe animals and living and nonliving things around those animals. Next they discussed different habitats and the plant and animal life that might exist in the habitat. We will be learning more about our guppies, African Dwarf Frogs, and snails next week. Stop by and see our new friends!
