CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION OF CUPOLA FURNACE

INTRODUCTION:A cupola furnace is a melting device used in foundries that can be used to melt cast iron and some bronzes. The cupola can be made almost any practical size. The size of cupola is expressed in diameters and can ranged from 18to 13 feet .The overall shape is cylindrical and the equipment is arranged vertically, usually supported by four legs .The overall look is similar to a large to a large smokestack. The bottom of the cylinder is fitted with doors which swing down and out to drop bottom. The top where gases escape can be open or fitted with a cap to prevent vary-rain from entering the cupola .To control emissions a cupola may be fitted with a cap that is designed to pull the gases into a device to pool the gases and remove particular matter. The shell of cupola, being usually made of Steel, has refractory brick and refractory patching material lining it. The bottom is lining in a similar manner but often a clay and sand mixture may be used, as this lining is temporary. The bottom lining is compressed or rammed against the bottom doors. Some cupolas are fitted with cooling jackets to keep the sights cool and with oxygen injection to make the coke fire burn hotter.

A typical cupola melting furnace consists of a water cooled vertical cylinder which is lined with refractory material.

The construction of a conventional cupola consists of a vertical steel shell which is lined with refractory brick. The charge is introduced into the furnace body by means of an opening approximately half way up the vertical shaft. The charge consists of alternate layer of the metal to be melted, coke fuel and lime stone flux. The fuel is burnt in air which is introduced through tuyeres position above the hearth. The hot gases generated in lower part of the shaft ascend and preheat the descending charge.

Various nos. of chemical reactions takes place in different zones of cupola. The construction and different zones of cupola are:-

1. WELL:
The space between the bottom of the tuyeres and the sand bed inside the cylindrical shell of the cupola is called as well of the cupola. As the melting occurs ,the molten metal is get collected in this portion before tapping out.
